    You did alright with those fit issues.
    I built the new Revell version of this Special Hobby kit, and had to work through these same exact fitting issues. I came real close to tossing it into the trash bin several times. I have made a series of videos of building this thing, and you will see me deal with them in much the same way you have. Where I really messed up was forgetting to install the lights on the underside of the wings! Yikes!

    Thoughtful, methodical approach as usual, thank you Steve. This will save time and heartache for those of us who will build this kit! That Large Scale Planes build is available in digital book form from KLP Publishing, along with other 1/32 builds. Highly recommended, they are really well done.

    Wow! I've never built a Special Hobby kit, and if I ever do, I'll know what is ahead. I'm pretty sure this kit cost quite a bit, and knowing that, I'm amazed the engineering isn't MUCH better! You have, once again, done an amazing job working the fit issues out. Very much looking forward to the next update!

    I know Special Hobby kits have fit issues but this is insane. I have their 1/32 scale P-39 and I see a LOT of dry fitting when I get around to building it. I like the Tempest but I'm going to stick with the 1/48 scale kit I have in my stash. I would also like to say I admire your patience while dealing with the fit problems and with luck the rest of the build will go a lot smoother. Good luck.

    • @TheModelShed
      @TheModelShed  Před rokem +1

      It’s good exercise to tackle one of these harder kits now and again. I’ve seen the P-39 but I think it would be a while before I got to that. I have the SH whirlwind so that will come before.

      The worst is the wing root fit ,lots of puddy and some rescribing on the p39 but it looks fantastic when done

    Whilst it is great for experienced modellers like yourself to have a challenge with a kit Steve, how do these ever get out of the factory when they just don't fit together? If this was some sort of everyday consumer item, we'd just send it back. The box should say something like 'approximate model needing bespoke construction'! But that being said, I love watching you dealing with it.

    • @TheModelShed
      @TheModelShed  Před rokem

      Thanks Phil. I think Special Hobby kits are a bit more difficult than others but they do some really interesting subjects so they’re worth looking at if you’re prepared to put a bit of extra time and effort in.

  • @johnhughes2653
    @johnhughes2653 Před rokem +1

    It looks like the end result will be a good one, but you certainly have to work get it! Regarding your suggestion for building the wheel bays in the top wing section: Would this not make it a lot harder to get the landing gear in the correct position? You seemed to be orienting the strut mounting relative to the aperture in the lower wing. I wouldn't try a combination part top, part bottom build as there looks to be a good chance of having gaps at the ends of the walls! It also might make fitting the cockpit between the u/c bays a bit of an iffy proposition as the top wing sections could shift minutely if they are only taped in place.

    • @TheModelShed
      @TheModelShed  Před rokem +1

      I think either approach has it’s benefits and drawbacks John. assembly into the top panel would make detailing easier, my way makes alignment easier. Easier is of course a relative term when describing this kit.

    The kit has remarkable detail and extras (resin engine etc). The fit is a nightmare! It will put your modeling skills to a test. The tolerances are ridiculously tight or even not existing in some places. Every single part needs attention so it can cooperate with the rest. But apart from the serious fit issues, the kit will produce a beautiful representation of the MkV.

    I love your videos, and watch all I get! I do have a question, I ve started a tamiya kit on the Bismarck, the kit is not great, but in the paint scheme it shows Bismarck, on 18 may, as having the black and white hull stripes, but not on the superstructure? In your research, is that accurate? Thanks for your opinion, means the world to me, keep up the awesome videos!

    • @TheModelShed
      @TheModelShed  Před rokem +1

      Tough question Jeff. The ship had definitely lost her superstructure stripes by 19 May when photographed by a Bf110 over the Baltic enroute to Norway. When the stripes were overpainted I don’t know but they were present on 5th May when Hitler inspected the ship. The problem with representing the ship around this time is the air recognition markings: they changed several times over the course of just a few days around the first half of May 41. Tamiya call it wrong with dark grey - they were likely yellow on this date and were gradually overpainted at sea before she reached Grimstadtfjord. This problem is why I elected to represent the ship as sunk. The camo is more definitely understood at this point.

    I don’t understand kits like this. It’s obvious the manufacturer used a CAD program to design it. Did no one at any point try to put the parts together? Either in CAD software or when they got a test kit back from the mould makers? There is no excuse for a modern kit (and an expensive one) to have these kinds of fit issues.

  • @danl.909
    @danl.909 Před rokem +1

    How does a kit this poorly designed get into production? Did the mfr. not build a test kit out of the first molding? If they did and went ahead regardless of its imperfections, one could imagine a couple of reasons: there was no money for new molds; they bought the design cheaply from another firm and were looking to make a quick buck. What else?

    • @TheModelShed
      @TheModelShed  Před rokem +1
