Anyway, I had to borrow two different tools from two different neighbors the other day to get my job done and I am done with that. Thanks for doing review of the Tekton brand of tools (how about some more) ..... I had never heard of them before now and I was an industrial mechanic for 20 yrs before I retired in 2007 ..... checked on-line for their website and was blown away by the scope of their line of tools ..... not sure how they will hold up under industrial usage but for the above average home user they look pretty darn good ..... prices seem pretty fair if you stay away from the multi-tool sets and just get what you need .... much better deal and their sockets seem to all be 6 point which is a big plus for me ..... sadly I sold all my tools when I retired mostly SK Wayne (still have one swivel headed ratchet I bought back in 1972) and to large part the ol' time Craftsman tools back when the name Craftsman meant something .....
    Thanks for all the great videos .... been a subscriber for about a month now and really enjoy your material ...... and unlike some I'm not a dye-in-the-wool brand hound ..... except maybe when it comes to battery operated tools and only because it makes more sense to stick with one battery type .....

    Tekton used to skip sizes but they have grabbed onto this frustration and they are very good about not skipping sizes. According to the standards of tool makers, certain sizes are actually not supposed to be used, e.g., 20mm, 16mm, and 9mm-- HOWEVER, manufacturers make products with these "impermissible" sizes... and thus the problems that now Tekton has solved.

  • @maxwellschmidt235
    @maxwellschmidt235 Před 5 lety

    Tekton is competitive (to say the least) across all products. What I like about them is that their products are guaranteed, not warranted. In some ways it's semantic, but the business model of the premium truck brands seems to get people to pay up front for multiple of the product, then come out ahead by only having to replace a few tools from sets. The word guarantee says "we believe this tool will be useful longer than you will be". They aren't charging nearly as much multiple up front, so their guarantee puts them at higher risk than the premium brands.
    On top of that, Tekton is at least as made in the USA as Snap-on. In terms of supporting the American worker, they give the added benefit of selling at a lower price point.
    I love my gearwrenches that I got a great deal on, but from now on, I'll be choosing Tekton unless the Pittsburgh price just makes more sense for a given tool.

    Their 3/8" extra long ratchet kept breaking right at the square drive portion. I was using it to remove honda transmission and differential drain bolts, and after a month or two it broke. I contacted them, and they send out a repair kit, which was easy enough to install. However, soon enough the repaired part failed in the exact same way. Instead of contacting them for another repair kit, I bit the bullet and bought the Snap-On equivalent FLL80. It hasn't failed on me once with the same torture use.

    • @RealToolReviews
      @RealToolReviews  Před 6 lety

      I think that the 3/8" version is good for up to 180 ft-lbs of torque max.....the 1/2" version is good to almost 500 ft-lbs. Sorry to hear you had a problem!

    • @jonnda
      @jonnda Před 6 lety

      It might do 180 ft-lbs a couple times... but it seemed to fail from fatigue. I also have a long SK 1/2 drive ratchet, but it's large head with a 3/8" drive adapter (to fit the odd 3/8 square drive bolt heads) does not fit between the frame and the differential on Honda Pilots. These drain bolts get rusted on there really well, and normal breaker bars are not a convenient solution. I do plan on giving the Tekton impact socket sets a try. And while I have your attention, do you have a review of that Ingersoll Rand W5132?

    • @RealToolReviews
      @RealToolReviews  Před 6 lety

      Tekton impact sockets (complete sets) = EXTREMELY GOOD VALUE!!! I don't have a review of the W5132....but I have both it & the 1/2" version W5152......they are probably the best cordless impacts (use-wise --- not most power) on the market today. Absolutely a cut above ALL other cordless impacts. Personally I would go with the 1/2" version since the 3/8" is exactly the same size tool....but if you can afford one, they are great.

    • @jonnda
      @jonnda Před 6 lety

      I was considering the 3/8 w5132, and then later on I was thinking of adding the w7150 for tougher lug nuts. How often do you have trouble removing lug nuts with the w5152? I normally use pnumatic aircat/nitrocat tools, but occasionally a salesman will have me come to the show room to install wheel locks. I think a comparison video of the W7150 and the W5152 would be a fun video.

    • @RealToolReviews
      @RealToolReviews  Před 6 lety +1

      I heard in July 2016 from people @ IR that a brushless replacement for the W7150 was coming.....that has been a year & a half.....not sure what the holdup is. I think that the W5152 would do pretty much everything except crank bolts on Hondas -- but there would be the occasionally nut/bolt that it wouldn't remove. The best part of it is the LED work light built in, and the 4 unique forward modes --- hand tight, wrench tight, mid-torque, and max-torque. Also, every mode switches to max power in reverse. The W7150 is more powerful, but it is also a LOT bigger.

      Not a fan of long wrenches myself. Things are just too tightly packed in there these days. I'm not much on muscling ratchets either. That's a job for breaker bars then attack it with the ratchet stuff. In the rust belt you quickly ruin any ratchet trying to bust stuff free under a car with them. I do like that six point setup on those wrenches . 6 points are what you want for the rusty stuff unless you have a torch handy.

    I'm watching your videos, you're gonna make me go out and blow money, I want more tools now, love the reviews. I recently came across some of the tekton tools for a cheap price and passed on them, I just thought they would be garbage. But seeing the review and reading comments on them, I must check them out

      SOME Tekton tools are better than others.....they do have "cheaper" versions of things, but the ones I review are all top quality.

      Real Tool Reviews
      I want to thank you for all your hard work. Your reviews are excellent. I learn something new every time time I watch your videos.
      You have definitely influenced my recent purchases since I found your channel a few months ago and my only wish is that you could do more videos. This is because while I understand that you have your reasons for not doing a ton of reviews on "cheaper" tools and reasons for focusing on Top Quality items, it can be hard to get much information on many items (just because something has no reviews doesn't necessarily mean it's bad and positive reviews on a web store doesn't necessarily mean it compares well vs a "quality tool").
      Either way, thank you and keep up the good work.

    I like your info and liked your input about many of the tools..
    I still like my U.S. Made Craftsman tools tho.. I jus know and that even if it's a sad situation when Ratchet gave up on the job and broke. I was still able to get my hands on a new replacement Chinese made Craftsman 3/8" Ratchet tool.
    Of course, all I had to do was hand in my Made in U.S.A. Craftsman 3/8" Ratchet tools. Then I receive a much cheaper tool from Sears. My new Ratchet is now made in China. But I was happy with the understanding for when my Brand New Chinese made Crapy 3/8" Ratchet breaks on. I will certainly be able to return much sooner than expected with my Cheap Chinese Crap to Sears...

    This may be a silly question, but is Tekton the same as/similar to harbor freight? I just bought some harbor freight composite ratchets and they look extremely similar.

  • @smitty2jones
    @smitty2jones Před 7 lety

    Does Tekton make Harbor Freight's composite ratchets? They look pretty much identical, and when you spun it @1:14, it shows the lever is opposite of every ratchet I've ever used (meaning the lever is to the right for tighten, where everything else is left for tighten).

I will probably lost some of it before it break down on me. I don't buy or own anymore snap-on anymore, its not a very smart investment. This work just as good if not better.

    My problem. I have a 3/8 and a 1/2 inch impact. Can't decide buy both socket sets or just get impact sockets in 1/2 inch and just regular thinwalls for the 3/8. I've thought about using adapters to us 1/2 sockets on my 3/8 impact but worry about losing torque when using adapters. hmmmmm
