    • @korishan
      @korishan Před 6 lety +34

      I think the "smell" people are referring to is the smell of freshly opened plastic/rubber/etc packages. Ya know, that really odd smell when you open a sealed box of tools or box of rubber gloves or something. The whole store smells that way. But, that's because they are moving "that much product" that the air doesn't have time to cycle out :P
      Us mechanics or workshop ppl smell that and be like, "Ahhh, the smell of tools!!! YEAH!!!" (and start Tim Tailer power tool grunt) :)

    FYI, snap-on backed off because they advertised as made in the USA. The lawsuit revealed that Harbor Freight actually did use the exact same factory in China that Snap-On had used to produce their “made in the USA” jack, so they dropped the suit.

    Not all of us are professional mechanics who need to dump our life savings into the back of the Snap On truck. I very much appreciate when you do reviews, that you often include the lower budget tools like the ones from Harbor Freight in the comparison. They may not always be the best, but the reviews do tell me whether or not the tool will work for the job I need it to do. I bought the Pittsburgh breaker bar after your review. I will probably use that tool only a handful of times, and thanks to your review I know it will do the job when I need it to. Keep them coming, they are well worth it.

      LeonaTimberCompany hell i spent years as a mechanic and used tons of hf tools. Thats what i started with and even though i upgraded a lot over the years it certainly wasnt because of failures. Most of the time i just liked the new tools looks or feel a little more. Gearwrench for example had a full set of wrenches sae and metric from like 6mm to 34 or 36mm with zero size skips. And from lile 5/32 up to 1 1/2 i think for under 300 bucks for both together. Hard to beat that.

    I am a parts puller at B&R auto wrecking in Eugene Oregon, we all consider it the make or break gauntlet for all types of tools. Working at such a fast paid on performance pace leads to broken and lost tools so warranty, price and quality are considered in that order. That being said here is my list of top five harbour frieght tool choices.
    1. Item 69561 1/2 inch drive deep 6 point metric socket set

    I love Harbor Freight. Their prices have enabled me to equip my shop with some items I couldn't have otherwise considered. Here are a few of my favorites:
    1. The 18" long 1/2" drive flex head Pittsburgh ratchet. It matches the breaker bar shown here.
    2. Their four drawer black tool cart. A great deal for $99 on sale. I have three of them.
    3. Their cheapest Drill Master 4-1/2" right angle grinders. A steal for $10 on sale. I use these with flap disks to remove paint, smooth welds, and grind away wood. They're very light and easy to control one-handed. I know they won't last forever, but neither will I.
    4. The one-ton height adjustable gantry crane. This, with one of their trolleys and a one-ton chain fall allows me to single-handedly load or unload trucks and trailers in the tall center area of my shop. Then, I can lower the crossbeam and roll it out of the way under a balcony.
    5. Their boxes of blue gloves.
    6. Their one and two ton shop cranes. It would be hard for me to by the components and build one for what they charge for them when they are on sale.
    I could go on, but will stop here. And Yes, I love my Snap-on tools, too.

    It’s 2+ years after this video was posted, but I thought I'd put in a real answer to your request, re: experiences with these tools.
    The Braun worklight does work very well but has at least one engineering problem and perhaps one usability issue, depending on your preferences. The micro USB charging port does break, as evidenced by the number of reviews mentioning that (including my own after a few months). I knew this going in, having done my due diligence, but figured I take really good care of my tools and would be very careful to insert/remove the charging plug every time. It still broke - that’s an engineering/manufacturing fault as far as I’m concerned. I recently purchased the updated model for a bit more $ and keep it plugged into the charger all the time, using it as a charger and a backup. I simply swap batteries when one runs down (without disconnecting it from the charger port). I’ll eventually get around to purchasing a real double battery charger and two more batteries so I can use either or both lights whenever I want and not have to screw around with that tiny, goofy micro port. I would really like to see Braun improve the charging connection by upgrading to the more current magnetic ports. Why mess with a tiny, fragile, failure-prone micro port when another type works so much better and easier with no chance of failing?
    The Braun worklight usability issue has to do with the switching between the three light modes. That feature was inelegant at best and irritating at worst until I got the hang of leaving the light at high for a few seconds more before turning off again if I only wanted to use the highbeam for a moment and the turn it off. The newer version is very different, has more interesting features and the light mode issue has been redesigned to more closely match what I think is more typical daily usage preferences. Between the two lights I now have several usage/lighting options which pretty much cover anything I might want or need of a light in this form factor.
    I have experience with two HF aluminum racing jacks. The first one I got (1.5-ton) (Craigslist) was purchased for very low money, knowing it was leaking down. It was all I could afford (plenty of time but no money). Prior to that purchase I had spent many hours researching online to teach myself how to repair and properly service floor jacks. I then got that one up and running easily and tested it in similar fashion to this video. It works flawlessly. I now suspect that most people who throw away their year-old floor jacks simply aren’t bleeding them out of the box (as per instructions) or servicing them later on correctly. The 2nd jack I purchased (2.5-ton) new with the best coupon I could find. I tested it overnight under typical load (2+ tons). It has worked perfectly for several months. I now keep a bottle of floor jack oil on hand for the times when I want to bleed or flush my jacks, just like other chemicals I keep on hand for taking care of anything else I own.
    For those of you patient enough to read through to the end of my post, here’s some bonus ideas. I’ve had the same four Sears jackstands for decades and they’ve always worked just fine (unlike my 1960’s Sears jack, which works fine but is a PITA to raise or adjust, what with the too-short rod that has to be removed to turn the valve on or off - it was good in its day). Now that I’ve got the garage cleared out and am working on my ride more frequently I decided it was time to address how to accurately reproduce jackstand heights for different types of jobs. I got sick and tired of rolling/crawling under the van multiple times to get jackstands where they needed to be. I really closely inspected one of the jackstands on the bench and discovered it has 10 height settings. The original white paint is still there. I used a magic marker to draw a straight line across the side of the lifting bar facing the release lever at each height and then numbered them all starting with “1” at the top. Now I know for sure where each stand is adjusted to at any given time without squinting to count the number of cutouts on the lifting bar that are exposed. I can readily reproduce settings that match whichever chore I’m planning at any given time so I only need to get down on the concrete to place and adjust the stands once. I have a chart with big lettering inside the lid of my tool chest and I’ll add to that chart whenever I do another job. That chart's right next to my other two - torque numbers for various fittings and metric/SAE socket equivalents. The less time I have to spend scrambling around to get things set up and having the right tools at hand when I need them the more time I can spend actually doing the job. Yay! :)

I bypassed the switch and the motor still runs like a champ.. ordered a new switch for $13.99 from harbor freight.. should last another 10 or 15 years. Also got a 3 ton heavy duty jack about the same time, still use it almost daily.. gave up my snap on box because I was getting nowhere paying for over 2 years.. went down to harbor freight and purchased a box of the same size and quality, no more payments, saved thousands of dollars 👍👍 I got tools from HF, Snap On, Mac, SK, proto, Craftsman, matco and I'd put up my harbor freight tools against them any time !! I have some that are surgically tight fitting, so I use my air gun to take them off easily by slipping it in the gloves and spritzing air into them and blowing them off my hands. Co-workers just told me about this store and I've been passing by it for years never knowing it was even there. So far the past 2 months I've been buying several tools from them.
    In less than 2 months here's what I've purchased:
    1. Daytona floor jack from the video
    2. ABS reader (the top of the line in the store)
    3. 3/8 flex head ratchet
    4. LED light from the video (I was so impressed I will buy 2 more)
    5. Wheel chock x4 (very well built)
    I'll be coming back again for their sockets and a few other things. Great store for things that you know is worth the money!!

    My favorite tool from Harbor Freight is the 1x30" belt sander. If you buy that for $50 and head over to Amazon, you can get a pack of "knife sharpening sanding belts" for an additional $20. Tack on another $20 for a leather belt and you've got yourself one of the best knife sharpeners you've ever had for less than $100. It will easily rival some of those over the wall knife sharpening systems sold online. You will get crazy sharp knives fast!
    Most over looked tool is the wood working table! If you're getting into woodworking and you don't have the tools (people in apartments for example), I challenge anyone to try to hold a piece of wood in place for hand planing. You can't do it without some sort of table to hold the wood to hand plane. For $120, money very well spent!

    I've got a few HF tools that I can recommend. I have a 20 ton press I've had for over 20 years; it still works well. I'm not leaving anything jacked up for any length of time, and even if I were to, it would be on the jack stands, so I'm not sure about it losing pressure over a week's time. I also got the breaker bar for $12 with the coupon and it works great! Last thing I can think of is the Pittsburgh Pro composite teardrop ratchet wrenches, I've got both 3/8" and 1/2" drives and I'm a fan. (DIYer here, not a professional)

      So snap on lawsuit said that harbor freight stole their jack, when really snap on stole their copy. Btw, the harbor freight Daytona also has its one UNIQUE patent. Not a coppied stolen one made in China like snap on. Read the lawsuit, its hilarious.

    Great video, very honestly done. I shop Harbor Freight every week I do believe their tools are getting better, not every tool is professional quality, but as I stated they are constantly improving and upgrading their tools They made a massive welder change from the inexpensive wire feed welders to a new brand they called Vulcan, which looks far superior to anything they've handled in the past.

    • @korishan
      @korishan Před 6 lety +3

      Yes, I've been wondering about the Vulcan line of tools. Like the wire feed. My uncles Lincoln Electric sorta died the other day. The wire feed quit working, not sure exactly why (will have to get out the multimeter and start probing). But I'd like to get one for myself. I've heard ppl bash the HF welder, and others praise them (often with the reply: It's not the welder that's the problem, it's the person using the welder that's the problem) So true :P

    • @mikebavoso26
      @mikebavoso26 Před 6 lety +5

      Thanks for your reply, the Hobart is made by Miller it's a very durable well built welder with a large fan and transformer, please let your uncle know I have close to a dozen Lincoln wire feed welders at work form around 10 years ago, they all have Billet aluminum Drive mechanisms. I noticed that a lot of inexpensive wire feed welder have plastic drive mechanisms with steel wheels. Even the Lincoln Welders you buy at Home Depot have plastic. A good welder for your uncle maybe the Hobart that's available at Tractor Supply. The one I purchased several years ago is all Billet aluminum with steel wheels and is a dual voltage input 120 /240. It can be used for small light metals on the 120 and put and on the 2:40 and but it can get into some quarter and 5/16 plate because of the higher output.

    • @korishan
      @korishan Před 6 lety

      Good idea!
      The only issue I have with the tires is they degrade pretty rapidly and a lot of them aren't true. If you take and spin the tire, you'll see it wobble pretty decently. I actually would do this test till I found 4 that barely wobbled for use on my handtruck.
      I've also found that if you take some Green Slime and put in the tires, they last a lot longer. Even if they aren't seeing rough terrain, sun light, or possible hidden nails, it helps extend the life of the rubber (some how)

    Very nice to know which tools are worth the cost. Thank you very much for posting the video.
    ONe of the tools that is a “Go TO” for me as an electrician is their rigid fiberglass fish rods. They had threaded ferrels on either end allowing them to be threaded together to stretch across a fairly great length. They are a smaller diameter that allow for ease of use and bending in and out of wall openings. They are nearly 10% the cost of comparable fish rods from larger electrical name brands. If they break; no big deal. If the male threaded end breaks off due to not getting them threaded tightly together it is very easy to grind down the brass end to a point, and to drill a horizontal hole through the end, to make for a new end positioned fish rod.
    Side point. The information shared here by the channel owner is really great. Please though work to refrain from yelling your reviews. They detract from the presentation. It caused me to exit the video. I prefer not to have to hear yelling.

Then after awhile I went to the other extreme in being real hard on it. The torques not great so I'd use it as a breaker bar and after I cracked the nut I'd then I'd start ratcheting. I toss it on the ground to coworkers and its dropped several times from 6 plus feet. Now a year later I want 1 for my toolbox at home. I was completely skeptical and now I'm shocked and amazed how great it works and how its held up despite my abuse.

    The 20V Earthquake LiIon Impact Wrench is so good, I rarely use my Earthquake XT air impact any longer. The 20V Earthquake LiIon gets lug nuts off without any issue,, on car or truck. Can handle camshaft/harmonic stabilizer nuts, and even suspension nuts. Works in junk yards (where you have no air), just plain works. About 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of a SnapOn, and works just as well (e.g $250)..
    The HFT brake caliper tool is one I use a lot, can press in like a C clamp, but also works on the twist in type of calipers on most Japanese makes. ($25).
    The $99-129 Mechanics socket set,, though I do have two knocks on that set. It comes with spark plug sockets for the two common sizes, but they are 1/2 inch drive sockets. The set only has one 1/2 drive extension, so I'd rather the set came with 3/8 drive plug sockets, where the set has two 3/8 drive extensions. Otherwise, a great set for $100. Quality has been excellent. The second knock is the set has only one 1/2 drive extension.

    After 10 years of using a Craftsman Professional 3 1/2 ton (black and yellow) floor jack, it finally quit with the seals leaking. I was forced to look at other options given the drama with Sears shutting down. After 4-5 months of careful consideration for my next floor jack, I went with the Harbor Freight 3 ton Daytona jack (yellow). I have to say, this jack is top quality, solid well built, smooth operation and easy to roll around. Its been about 3 months of regular usage in the garage and am extremely happy with it. If you are in the market and looking at buying a more expensive NAPA or Snap-on floor jack, you're wasting your time and money. This is an excellent buy, no regrets. I have to mention, it took me a few months to finally break free from the Craftsman brand loyalty mindset. I will never look at tools and automotive repair equipment with the same eyes, ever again.

    Most people think the difference in quality is the price. That a tool is only worth what it costs. They fail to realize that the bigger named tools have to roll market advertising into their pricing. Not to mention corporate bonuses and extended vacations for their execs. Harbor freight routinely sells comparable tools in all lines that are 25-50% the price of mainstream brands with only a minimal difference in quality. I've been buying and using HF tools for 20+ years and keep coming back.

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade

      There used to be at least some correlation between price and quality, these days it's all over the place. Sometimes the cheap tool is better, sometimes the other way around. Sometimes they're literally the same thing just with different quality control and branding.
      You can blame the free market enthusiasts for it. It used to be how much labor and materials it cost to produce or how much labor it saved that established its value, now it's how much you can trick somebody into paying for it.

    Totally agree on the breaker bars! I give mine hell and it has held up over 12yrs. Just put locktite on the head retainer screw as I almost lost mine. The tool carts and tool boxes are also nice for the price (own 3). Jacks are nice as well. I think the only thing I would disagree with is the impact wrench. I recommend getting AirCat pneumatic impact, die grinder, and air ratchets. Top air drill would say Chicago Pneumatic...not Central Pneumatic! HF impact sockets have held up. Stay away from their socket adapters, serpentine wrench, and A/C service gauges as they are all sub-standard. The adapters and wrench broke as if they were zamak metal. Hitachi cordless drill and impact get my vote as they hold up well and are fairly cheap, And for the flashlight I go Fenix with 18650 batteries. The hand ratchets are nice for the house but I stick with Matco for work. The mini mills are nice if you gut the plastic gears and go belt drive system from littlemachineshop. Sand blasting cabinet works well if you put in the time to go the extra mile during setup and seal everything. Powder coating gun works good but prefer Eastwood dual voltage to fight faraday effect in tight corners.

    My favorite Harbor Freight tool is their circuit breaker locator. It's amazingly accurate, incredibly inexpensive, and there is only one other like it I have ever been able to find, which costs an arm and a leg.

    I have the 26” top and bottom us general box set and I absolutely love it. I looked at several others such as husky, craftsman, and snap on. For the price and quality, it was a steal! Harbor freight gets a bad rep a lot, but for the average joe, such as myself, it’s a no brainer. I don’t make my living turning wrenches, just the usual vehicle and lawn equipment maintenance. I buy ALL of my tools at harbor freight.

    I have to admit as an occasional DIY guy I didn't expect their electric impact wrench to perform the way it did when I used it on brake job. It's definitely not a professional tool but to have one in the garage for occasional use at a typical cost of $40 you can't beat it. I was impressed and the cost makes it bargain especially if you're just using it occasionally.

    3 point flex ratchet. Try to use a regular ratchet deep inside the engine bay. The 18” magnetic bar to hang tools is the $3 you can spend.

    I have the Daytona, love it. I went through their other jacks quick, have 3 dead one. I have a Snap on collection that is ridiculous that I've paid weekly on for years. like a Modis Edge scanner, cordless impacts. The best thing to date from HF is their hose reels. Snap On sold me this off name hose reel that is enclosed that cost like $150 that I hate. It takes forever to reel it in. I have a harbor freight that has work daily for 12 years. The hose wore out 3 years back and I bought a 25 foot HF hose and replaced it. The 17'x10' portable garage. 3 years ago a friend bought one and put in my backyard to store his Hellcat. Staked it on dirt and it withstood 75mph winds. So I bought one 8 months ago, mounted it one cement with anchors. In one month the wind ripped it at the seams. Same part #, 1/2 the quality. The first still stands strong. I go to harbor freight wearing my Snap On jacket and tell them it's the only thing of their worth advertising.

Semi / RV wheels and even Dana 60 kingpins which are supposed to be factory torqued to like 400ft/lbs or something like that. I should mention I've been running mine thru a two stage @ 150psi too.

    I like HF's air powered brake bleeder gun. I think I only paid $25 for it. And, since it's chemical resistant, you can use it to suck up most fluids, power steering fluid, anitfreeze, and motor and gear oils etc... It's a lot beter than using a manual suction gun.

      Have you measured the vacuum level it's able to produce to see if it's as much as a regular vacuum pump? I have an old venturi vacuum pump that's meant for evacuating air conditioning systems which is how this one also works, maybe I could repurpose it for use with bleeding lines. This one with the trigger valve would be easier though, I may see about getting one when it shows up at 25 instead of 33.

      No I haven't. This said tool is only for sucked up fluids. It is the Pittsburgh Brake Fluid Bleeder, item# 61912 from HF, if anyone would like to know. I've had this tool for 3-4 years and it still works. P.S Item# 61912 has been discountued, Item # 92924 looks to be the updated version at $34.

    Being in the automotive industry, I'm always looking for the best bang for the buck on tools and storage. I am a frequent customer of Harbor Freight and strongly recommend the 30in US General carts mentioned (which now has a 2nd series), the XT, and 44in tool chest from them which had a bottom and top chest as well as optional 3rd bank addon drawers and additional end cabinet. If you're new to the industry looking for a good set to do your own maintenance at home, I recommend the 301pc Mechanic's tool set

    Picked up a Predator 3500 watt inverter generator from HF a few months back. It's great!! It is actually really quiet and powers everything in the travel trailer. Have about 300 hours on it and not a single issue except the battery went to hell for the electric start, but it fires up with a single simple pull.
