    Milan has a pretty extensive network. I didn’t know much about the city’s railways in the past but now I see it has quite a history. The S lines are also a great S-Bahn/RER style network that seem to cover every inch of the greater metropolitan area. Very impressive network and great video!

    Milan has the best Urban (rail and tram) system in Italy
    Some curiosities about the system:
    The construction of the first section of M1 took place with the use of a method that involved excavation in the trench and the total uncovering of the pit, followed by the construction of the tunnel with a rectangular section and then by the coverage with reinforced concrete beams. a Cut and cover method but with less disruption for the surface services
    The M1 Line is the first in italy being powered with a conductor rail (with tension of 750 V DC) and currently is the only Heavy rail in italy with this system
    the M1 line was supposed to be a rubber tyred metro but the idea was scrapped
    The 1972 M2 extension from Cascina Gobba to Gorgonzola: It was originally a suburban rapid tramway built in 1968 which was to be part of the "fast lines of the river Adda" which were to replace the slow suburban tramways Milan-Vaprio and Milan-Vimercate. At the time only the gorgonzola line was built and from 1968 to 1972 this line was covered by Trams but in 1970 it was decided to convert the line from suburban tram to Metro and in the same year it became an extension of the M3 line.
    For a short time between 1970 and 1972, trams and metro trains could be seen running along the same tracks before the complete withdrawal of the tram service.
    ( it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linee_celeri_dell%27Adda#/media/File:Milano_via_Palmanova_tram_e_metropolitana.jpg )
    ( it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linee_celeri_dell%27Adda#/media/File:Cascina_Gobba.jpg )
    The M2 line is currently the longest metro line in italy and one of the longest tin europe
    Unlike Berlin and other cities, Milan S trains have actually the same loading gauge and platform height of main national and regional train, they are main line train doing urban and suburban service in Milan

    • @gab_v250
      @gab_v250 Před rokem

      also M1 has a four rail electric system (like London Underground), because of electric leaks in the ground. This has been solved with better building techniques on the Lines 5 and 4 (750 V, third rail).
      The Lines 2 and 3 instead work with 1.5 kV DC under catenary (similar to Rome and Naples metro lines)

    Update to december 2022
    A few weeks ago a new automated line was opened, the M4; at the moment, it only runs between Linate airport and Dateo station on the Passante, but it will probably be completed by the next one-two years, passing south of the city centre to Milano San Cristoforo railway station, on the suburban S9 line.
    Furthermoere, a few days ago a new infill station on the S9 line in southern Milan, Tibaldi, was inaugurated between Romolo and Porta Romana station 👍👍

Last year they inaugurated the first branch of the M4 which will be completed by 2024. Several lines will see major extensions such as M1, M2, M4 & M5 and they will be done by 2030. They also just started to plan M6. There is so much more that could have been covered :)

    I really wish Milan focused more on providing metro service to its urban core verses the suburbs during the Metro's initial development. To have M2 travel out to the suburbs so far, so early in the metro's development, when so much of such a dense city was unserved by metro, and the suburbs was already served by a plethora of suburban rail, is a pretty odd decision. Of course I wouldn't deny that there's most likely some great tram lines connecting to rail stations throughout the city, and I also wouldn't deny that there are important destinations along M2, but how much more important are they than the density and importance of central Milan?

    • @captainufo4587
      @captainufo4587 Před měsícem

      The eastern branch of the M2 was an interurban light rail that existed since 1878. They just converted parts of it to metro service (well, the 1950s plan was to convert it all, together with another tramway to the notheast, into a suburban railway into Milan; that never happened and the part that were already converted to heavy rail were integrated, 20 years later, in the new metro line). The line through the city center, instead, had to be dug from scratch.

      M4 and M5 were planned basically at the same time, around 2007, and were both part of the 2015 Expo dossier. M4 runs east-west, from the Linate Airport, connecting with M1 at San Babila, then passing south of the city center, connection with M2 at Sant'Ambrogio, then west almost parallel to the Bisceglie branch of M1.
      There were financing issues for 4 (basically they tried to finance the whole line in one go and failed), so its construction was delayed. It's being built right now. Technically the first stretch, from the Linate Airport to Dateo, has been ready since late 2021. The opening had been postponed because with Covid the airport saw a drastic reduction in passengers, and without the airport that short stub of line is not going to attract lots of passengers. It may open later this year, though. We'll see. Personally I think at this point they should wait until it's complete until at least San babila.

      South of milan lies the southern agricultural park, it's not really that populated while north east and west of milan are really packed

      Probably the best way is to look on an map, google or apple and look at satellite view and see how many villages and cities are to the north while only few to the south, also you can see how south is more greener while the northern part is red like the roof of the houses

      S12, like S14, S15 and S16 are planned but they will never enter service, because politically support for public transport is totally dyed. Instead, they are reducing services on existing lines. The S13 is actually a renomination of the old S10, in order to avoid confusion with the S-Bahn system in Canton Ticino, Switzerland, which also travels for some sanctions along the one of Milano. The S-Bahn lines in Canton Ticino are indeed numbered from S10 to S90 (S10, S20, S30...)

      Line 4 has already opened but not at all, until the end of 2024 it will completely open, in the meanwhile line 5 has worked for 11 years, but it was designed after line 4, even if it was built before
