  • This is how I strip graze my Lowline Angus (American Aberdeen Angus) cattle on stockpiled grass forage. Reels of electric fence allow me to control just how much stockpiled forage the cattle are able to graze. By strip grazing my cattle this way, I am able to feed much less hay. I shouldn't have to feed hay at all until February.

Do you add a wire across to keep the cows from going back to the previous week’s paddock, or just 1 wire to keep them from going past the 40-50’ of new paddock?

Just one wire. With the cold weather, I'm not able to get water to them as easily as I can in warmer months. I let them go back over the area they've already been so they can get back to the tank I have near the house. In the spring, I'll start using 2 wires to give the grass time to recover. I'll also have lanes set up for water access closer to where they're grazing.

@@PlaneViewFarm love what you’re doing with the family farm! I became the new owner of 130 acres in OK after my father passed. Starting with chickens and pigs to get my feet wet 😬

How many heads of cattle do you have and how many acres of pasture are they in? I’m have about 7 acres of pasture at my farm good pasture that I planted how many low line angus do you think I can have on it for grazing? I have Dexters right now I me just wondering if low line is better for me I would really appreciate you opinion on it thanks

I have 9 cows, 8 calves (one on the way), and 1 bull on 20 acres, but I'm probably a little bit over on my stocking rate. I'm in Southern Missouri. It's hard to say what your stocking rate would be as it can vary quite a bit from one location to another. You might try to find grazing guide or manual for your area. They can sometimes be found on College or University websites. Or, you might message someone in the ag department, or check with an extension service, if you have one nearby. The Dexters are going to be slightly higher on stocking rate than the lowlines, because of size. The lowline cattle are a bit larger.
