Tearing Down My RUINED $20,000 Audi R8 Engine (Lamborghini DNA)

- I sold my twin turbo 2008 Audi R8. What I didn't sell was the original 4.2L V8 engine that I had to replace, it's been sitting in my garage at home for years. Today we're going to tear it down and see what went wrong. Then I can pack up the heads and send them to a buyer that wanted the top end of the engine. We'll finally get to see how bad the damage was that took an old supercar out of commision.

It's like an extra episode of "I do cars"!
I LOVE that channel. Saturday night addiction!
My thoughts exactly. Eric does an amazing job every week with his tear downs. It's my Sunday morning ritual with my coffee.
That timing setup looked like a literal nightmare for any form of service. I'm going to have a night terror tonight about fixing one.
In your night terror you will loop dream your frustration over one gear that will not go into place even though you know it's right.
The Q7 is much more of a pain to work on.
If everything is so great, why does it not work?
Great Audi technology, can't be fixed!
@@glennp827 It works. But when it doesn't, damn.... VW group sure know how to make people have suicidal thoughts.
Seeing the tear down of this piece of engineering onanism makes me appreciate the simplicity and honesty of the Chev V-8 all the more. Massive bulk, parts count in the millions, failure points buried like landmines everywhere, exotic and un-serviceable components; all to achieve middling performance. Its as if the engineers conspired to insult and torture the people who would buy their engines. It must be their revenge for getting their asses handed to the them in WW2.
you are a redneck no doubt
The disassembled parts laid out might make for an interesting art installation or museum exhibit. I don't think many people would have any idea as to the sheer complexity of some car engines.
Shadow boxes on the wall. Lots of shadow boxes.
the amount of engineering in these engines is absolutely crazy
It's like a watch!
mind boggling
I wish some customers could understand that. Can’t you just take it apart and fix it. Yes yes I can but it’s gonna cost x. That ridiculous is usually the response.
I grew up in Germany and my family had just about every German automotive brand…watching this tear down, I know now why they drive Toyota’s.
To be fair, German cars that are manufactured in Europe have far better quality than those that are assembled outside Europe. But overall, Toyota's design are far more simpler in terms of mechanicals and layout/ergonomics.
As a result, when they do break, they are easier & cheaper to fix. The only downside is that they are boring. But for daily drive, I'd prefer Toyota.
@@aabidamn rather be bored driving a Toyota than stuck on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck when you decide to take a road trip. Then get handed a 5to10k bill from an remote audi facility to get you back on the road. I know deep down when I rode trip twice a year my acura will make it. I just change the oil rotate the tires and I'm like yup she's good to go even with 160k on the dash. Beat the piss out of it down and up mountains. Don't have to worry about timing chain guides or water pump or pcv systems nor oil leaks nor window regs malfunctions. Just a good feeling to know your vehicles going to get you there and back multiple times with 0.0 worries.
@@aabidamn I think pretty much every BMW sedan owner would disagree with you.... They are famous for terrible reliability these days. Toyota had to re-engineer lots of the BMW engine to make it worthy of the new Supra. And I'm not sure I would call any Lexus engine design "simple"....
@@ckm-mkc You don't think that BMWs that are assembled in Europe have better quality than those that are made in China, Indonesia, and the US? Are you sure about that?
As for Lexus/Toyota, I was talking about their non V8 engines.
@@aabidamn If it's the same engine with the same components on it, it should be the same, that's if the engine assembly line is following things like torque specs and what not. Only if BMW or VW start replacing original supplied parts with parts from another manufacture to save cash. i.e. an oil pump from china manufacture versus one made in Germany, then yeah I would think that's different quality . After all, why did you go to that Chinese manufacture to sub in a part? But I would think, if the engine has the exact same parts being supplied it should have the same reliability no matter what side of the Atlantic its being assembled on.
But what I'll say is manufactures like VW do things like change suspension, steering, and completely different engines for the North American Passat versus the European made one. We don't even get an option for a Euro spec Passat anymore like back in 2010 with the GLI being a European version, versus the rest of the Passat lineup being made in Mexico with different engines and suspension (way more cushy ride for Americans, rear torsion versus multilink in euro version) and a bunch of other parts made cheaper on this side of the Atlantic. Heck they don't even offer the same instrument cluster.. At least looking back to 2010 that I could do a comparison on. Regular Car Reviews did a fantastic essay on the the last Passat models made from 2021; as they wind down production on that model czcams.com/video/BJWlpMbK2KU/video.html
Very cool. Great to see the inner workings of the engine!
Man, you're very knowledgeable. With an ability to comprehend and work instantaneously.
Amazing.
Combined with a surgeon's touch.
Every time I watch your videos I am amazed at all the knowledge you have. How does anyone get to this level at such a young age? Very impressive
Thanks for filming this! I have taken apart an engine or two apart before but they were nothing like the R8 V8 engine. This is super interesting!
I was a bit dubious on why it wasn't being rebuilt. Yup, good call on getting a replacement.
Very well executed, I'm addicted to your channel, keep going on and on.👌
Wow, Love it! Amazing engineering. Thinking of car-themed furniture - like the Top Gear set.
Another great video from JR. Thanks
Awesome video bud! Would love to see you do more videos like this.
I’ll stick to my small block chevys 😂
Super interesting! But also holy crap that is a complicated engine!
I can't imagine with the complexity of this engine how it isn't at all reliable, not like there's a million failure opportunities. then again anything could burn a hole in a piston if its lean enough.
It's not reliable. These are throw away sports cars.
Ummm. Who says??
complex doesn't mean unreliabke
Wow, I had heard these engines had an issue with chain tensioner wear and were extremely expensive to fix, now I see why. I love high tech stuff but would never buy one of these, the maintenance cost to prevent catastrophic failure is just too high. I'm not a GM lover, but I have to say Chevrolet did a much better job on the latest Z06 engine than this disaster waiting to happen.
I love pulling things apart. I feel like a child wondering what mysteries lay inside waiting to be revealed.
Me too. But the difference between me and JR, he sure knows how to put things back together.
Amazing video and amazing piece of engineering. Personally I am always flabbergasted at the sight of the "plastic" timing chain guides. Such complex engineering relying on something that, ultimately, is brittle and a point of failure, as I have seen in so many videos.
If you add the complexity to get to the point of managing to replace them, you realise the incredible potential for disaster and waste of time and money...
Agreed those tensioner plastic guides were surely going to fail at 65 k and guess what engine out job to do the timing chain tensioners.
I think you're right about them being a point of failure, but wrong if you think it was "bad engineering". It was engineered to fail, otherwise you would never have a reason to buy another R8. I mean he said it when he did it...it was cheaper to just buy another engine than repair it.
Awesome video JR.
Thanks for the teardown, 👍. Eric at "I do cars" would be proud of you. Those engine parts look really stout and are absolutely beautiful works of engineering. It's a shame such a minor defect in the number seven cylinder would trash the whole thing.
Super informative episode, thx
Love the T -shirt, chop shop and exotic engine parts available. Great content awesome tear down.
Seems like (7) of those pistons could be worth gold to someone.
Maybe in a future video you can tell us how much of the cost of the replacement engine you are able to cover by parting the old!
should make a table out of the block, would probably make more on that with a cleaning, some feets and a slab o glass. could go super fancy and put leds so they sine through the bores
You promised us an R8 engine block coffee table.
Awesome engine, how much tech is too much? My guess it is needed for the high RPMs and smooth delivery of power. You would think Audi would warranty such a work of art and technical savvy. Great episode!
Really awesome introduction to the Audi R8 engine.
Audi B6 & b7 V8 all have the timing chains in the rear and an engine pull is necessary. Great video and good understanding of the R8 engine.
Wow, what a video. That engine is definitely art.
That is crazy!
Also. YOU'RE AMAZING! But yeah, that is crazy of how many bolts it takes to strip that engine down.
That engine is so over the top, it's ridiculous! What a freaking nightmare to work on. BTW, love your dad in the tik tok gag!
I love it. Chainsaw just chilling next to the pile of parts haha. Ur the man JR
For such a sophisticated engine, it sure does seem like there is a lot of rotational mass in all those gears.
Yes! Thanks for this video!
great tear down
It's like that show were the guy breaks down high end watches like Omega and Rolex. Super cool clock work going on, Thanks for sharing.
Whoah!! Love this series.... Wait, the R-8?? Where's the tear down for the Jag?
So cool, enjoyed this more than I should have! 🤔
You can get some of those longer Milwaukee Shockwave torx bits, they fit in tight openings better than a bit holder would. I have some 3" and 4" ones and I prefer using them over the small bits with a bit holder.
I hope you get a lot of money for the heads and other parts 🤘🏽👍🏾🔥
So complex! Fun to see.
That was super cool. Thanks very much.
That was a really cool engine tear down!
Excellent teardown video. I'll never touch an R8 powerplant, but I appreciated it nonetheless.
“On todays episode of WatchJRGo, lots of impact driver noises!”
😂😂
That was truly awesome to see torn down. Wow. Thank You! The replacement engine cost 20K. Ten thousand of that was the cost of fasteners.
Good and Faithful Servant. 👍 Good heritage shining thru !
Epic video JR 😁. Given how "little" damage there was on the inside, I have to wonder if the twin-turbo Haeffner setup made things much worse than they really were? In other words, if you simply had this as an NA V8, would the damage have been "drive-able" for 10Ks of miles without actually working/repairing #7? 🤔
Wow.... that was a great teardown. It's kind of sad that you couldn't fix it. While it wouldn't be practical for most shops, a restored engine would be worth a substantial amount to someone who needed to replace their engine.
You should keep some of the small parts from the engine and have BunkerBrand throw in a piece with the next few orders of the "Avoid Your Problems" R8 T-Shirt!
That sub assembly with the gears and Lambo logo right in the casting is cool as hell. I am sure a bunch of people would be interested in buying some of these parts just as wall art. I want that sub assembly.
Neat, great vid. Good sale
Today we learn why the General Motors LS engine is the most popular enthusiast platform in the world....
Yep Audi crap is Unreliable, overly complex, extremely expensive to manufacture, impossible to repair. IT IS GARBAGE
Wow JR what a work of art,I would clean up the block and crankshaft and use them for art, look brill hanging up in the workshop, plus I think time to do more motorcycle stuff, one things for sure you know your stuff.brill vid👍👍
That is insanely packed tight with stuff on stuff. Gez.
I am a retired foreign car mechanic and I enjoyed watching the R8 motor come apart. I would like to point out a few things please. First, I saw the flying line array for tunes, just awesome, we also had a huge system with subs in our shop. Second, there is this invention called a "table". Sometimes they are used as "workbenches". Tables or workbenches are used to place things on to bring them to a waist high level. And there are also things called shelves that are used to organize things so you always where things are. In looking around your shop, it appears you like placing everything on the floor, all over the shop. All over the shop! Shelves and tables dude. Yes massive sarcasm, but can you blame me?
"WatchJRGo" is the absolute perfect name for this channel. JR works so fast and efficiently
Major!!! Love the video.
You Killed it ..... no really ..... you killed it 🤣😂🤣
After watching this tear down I now know where the channel's name comes from. WatchJRGo indeed!
Can you do some cheap car flips , miss those 🙂
You have come a VERY long way and grown massively over the last 4 years that I've been a subscriber to your channel. I would also like to thank you Ssooo much for letting us join you on this journey. I would also like to see you tear down a W-12. I've watched the video posted by VW of the workers building the engine BUT, it doesn't show everything.😁
Please, show us the car crusher working from go to whoa with a load of recycling being put in and turning it into a cube! I know I am going on about it on each video but there is nothing like watching a project work the way it is designed.
That are some happy looking pistons :)
That teardown just justified the $20K price of the crate engine. It actually seems like a good price now that I've seen all that goes into it
Yeah, and that’s just the engine! The nightmare that he went through doing the swap and getting it running??? No thanks!
@@jeffeastman625 Plus he did the engine swap in his home garage before he got the lifts in the big shop. Man what a job that was he did.
What a cool ass video Bravo!!!
I have the 4.2L v8 in a 2007 S4 Cabriolet. Great engine.
Whats the plan for the bare block?? I would love to have that bare block? Or are you keeping it?
Audi's way to help out Flat Rate Techs "Torx Screw Everything" engine related 👍
Pretty much all modern VAG products are Torx only with triple-square & e-torx added in for confusion.
Jr did you look to see how much carbon is caked on the valves? I'm curious to see if there is alot at 50k miles.
Watched this video in reverse so I could finally see WatchJRGo build an engine.
VT247
Very cool video
You Disemboweled that thang, more more more lol
JR Mega video! 👍🏻
The impact and no sequence to the cam girdle was hard to watch.
cringy video how to warp a head 101 ahahah
@@Kanzenjdm watchjr make more issues.
Thought the same thing, and seeing I Do Cars channel do it correctly every every week on really beaten up engines really shows how important that is
And the chisel?!? Was glad he said it was going to the scrap bin afterwards. Shame really….
Yep, and the same thing with the head bolts. And he laid the crank shaft flat on the ground. Always stand a crank on its end. Go to any machine shop and every crank shaft you see will be standing on its end.
Awesome engine, not sure if I wanted to have one. LS V8 for simplicity.
Quite the stroke on that engine.think you could just hone it without having to re sleeve it.I don't think I'd use a cheisel to disassemble it tho lol
You should reassemble the bottom end and make lexan covers, Drive it by a small electric motor and use it as a coffee table.
Great video as always JR👍🏻
Cheers Pat 🇦🇺
Yes table from
The block would be cool
I’m getting a vibe of the I Do Cars channel on this one
Fork lifts make it so easy one man team 😂
Youre telling me the entire engine that you said was "beautiful" and that slight bit of damage on the cylinder toasted the entire thing? Damn..
Bad tune my guess
@@jasonw3303 Just doesnt make sense if pretty much the entire engine was good.. ive seen honda engines run with MUCH worse damage.. lmao these damn exotics
@Burt psh yeah.. LS1 can be pulled from a junkyard most of the time no problem.. little baby small cylinder discoloration and gap and the engine “can’t be salvaged??” Smells a money grabber from Audi like was it designed like this??
I was suppose to go to sleep.. but my brain said nope, let's watch JR exume the ill fated R8 engine and dissect the corpse.
Nice!👌
That was impressive. I'd love to see you put this back together, fix it, and throw it in another car.
Great stuff , now lets see the Jag engine ripped apart.
I'm curious... do you use a service like AllData or Mitchell on demand? Or do you just rip into projects & figure it out as you go?
NICE SHIRT!
When a watch maker creates an engine.
I like the work that was cool
Not quite an "I Do Cars" tear down video, but cool and interesting. Hope the Audi 3.0t v-6 is next as I have an 09 A6 with one in it.
Check out VAG Technik. They have videos showing the tear down and rebuild of Audi engines including the 3.0 T supercharged S5 V6 and the 4.2 RS5 V8.
Saving Salvage (a UK channel) rebuilt one of these engines. Great videos to watch.
He bought second hand pistons.
It’s like a scaled-up Swiss watch movement.
Pretty clean motor
Basically the same engine platform as the 3.2/3.0T engines. Very impressive engines and long lasting in normal not modified applications.
I am really appreciating my small block GM engines after seeing this!
This guy using a chisel to remove timing cover and oil pan hurt my heart.
You didn’t introduce white tee shirt to us,really liked this car, can’t believe that little bit toasted this car
I hope you can recover much of your new engine cost in these parts.
