That isn’t a factory exhaust ….that Fixed roof coupe is a very sought after example of the C5 definitely worth fixing
As an avid car audio enthusiast, the large gage wire (grounds and charging from alt to battery) is called "the big 3 upgrade". With it having the large fuse holder from the battery, it's quite obvious at one point there was a system in the car. The "big 3" is done to promote maximum charging transfer and the upgraded grounds help as well. The alternator is probably bad from having too much draw from an aftermarket stereo system. Factory alternators aren't designed to handle the kinds of loads some aftermarket stereo systems require. I for one have 3 alternators on my vehicle. 1 to run the engine, 2 to handle the stereo (we run lithium battery banks, separate from the vehicles charging system) The extra alternators only charge the lithium. You cannot combine lead acid or AGM, with lithium on the same charging system. Hope this helps. Love the channel. Indiana for the win!
If the A/C compressor is turning, you might need to "recalibrate" the blend door motors. Just pull the fuse for "HVAC" at the passenger side foot well, start the car, then reinstall the fuse and wait for the climate control to calibrate. Granted this is how you do it on the "dual zone" systems with LED read-out. I'm not sure about the manual single zone style with the dials for fan speed, temp, and foot/face selection. But I think you did pretty good on that car at $4k. Try rubbing alcohol, or "goof off" on that adhesive residue left by the plastic cover.

@@thomasharris5151 It worked on the '04 C5 I drive daily. After disconnecting the battery it somehow lost it's calibration and the driver's side vents blew hot air. I found the "how to" from a Corvette forum post and thought it might help here. Thanks for the thumbs up!
Thats a good price for an FRC. Optima batteries when they die, they are useless until restored properly. Its cammed plus the gas and plugs might be rough from sitting
If it’s an FRC doesn’t that mean it’s a Z06? Or where there FRCs with the base LS1s?
Red line the engine to charge the optima and leave it running for 30 minutes. Worked for me

The Fixed Roof Coupe (FRC) is the predecessor to the C5 Z06. Highly sought after. Excellent find Randy. I'd be interested when it's time to sell. Would love to see this one put back together.

It has a Newer Cam. the car is a shaking, and a grumbling noise tells the story.
Very common for replacement alternators to not have the corvette protection diode in them. That causes the charge system fault.
Cant wait for the follow up videos on this on what a nice project.

yes its has a cam.. and that optima battery should be good.. it's the alternator that killed it... as you know the alternator has to be bigger then the battery its charging
Optima batteries are absolute garbage now. My AGM autozone battery is lightuears better than the Optima it replaced.
Those Falcon Tires are more of a road course tire and suck in the cold.
Nice sounding cam! I have been waiting for this one I saw the c5 sitting there for a while now. I have an all-black 2001 c5 convertible, it is a great car and I always get compliments when I drive it. It is very clean, I won a couple of local car shows with it! Probably my favorite Corvette over my c4 and c8. Mine is pushing 500 hp to the wheels and I have a Magnaflow stainless exhaust that is not at a neighbor hater sound level. I'm not too fond of it being too loud anyway. Yours sounds great. I really enjoy the convertible top too. When you take that car for a real ride you are going to love it. Good luck! That car has a much larger cam than stock, you can hear the overlap. You'll need to check out the tune on it as well.

I was wondering that myself. I think it's part hoping he can do it in one piece and at the same time time waiting for it to disintegrate into small bits and having it clean them off while muttering to himself. Great video once again.

those optima batteries are such expensive trash . they are always dead . and if that battery is that dead the car will say charging system fault because it can't keep up running the car and trying to charge that battery . try putting a good battery in it and I'm gonna say the charging issue will be fixed . and disconnect that amp wire fire waiting to happen . I really like this car 😁

Great find. That frc is not bad at all. Almost seems as if someone had wheels tires and an exhaust on it and took that off tossed stock wheels back on it and some stock exhaust bits before it was totaled by insurance.

Wow that is a sweet Corvette for such little money! It is for sure cammed and has a nice tone to it actually. That alternator looks very new which is interesting. From what I remember (I could be wrong because it was early in my career) They made a Hard Top Coupe version of the C5 to have a more "inexpensive" more Rigid platform for people that would Track Day their cars. Its Rare to see one as well equipped as yours is and with a Manual Transmission. Definitely worth the bodywork, paint, and little bit of your brand of tinkering you are gonna do and, I think you bought it right
From my experience owning (still do) the exact same car year/make/model/color (FRC) to the "T", I would highly suggest a GM or AcDelco alternator. I had bad experiences with some local parts company alternators that my C5 didn't agree with. With the cost of these cars being in a fairly attainable bracket, there is still a large aftermarket variety of performance parts out there. The body panels aren't that expensive, and with your connections at Maaco paint you can have it looking great again. Then you can have some fun with tasteful mods and have a car that rips and has value while keeping many of us watching and collecting views. Just my two cents but I hope to see more of this car on your channel!

LOL on the 12 year old battery. If I were to pickup an old car like that, I would probably not have been powered it up without a new battery and fluids. I was almost holding my breath when you were driving worried about it stalling :)

I have a 08 Silverado . Initially when I bought it it sat for some time with a dead battery . I replaced the battery I got a charge system fault and and the alternator was not working . I ordered a new alternator and before I picked it up to instal it the alternator began to work that was 4 years ago. Idk the issue exactly but something reset but it took a little bit of time (a hour or so ) after new battery instal . Long story short Randy don’t panic after you instal a new battery , something may need to reset .
Looks like a capable track rat! You can remove the ABS module from the side of the pump and have it fixed. I had the same problem with a C6. Or, it could be because the fuse is pulled (again, track rat). I like it more than the Viper.

That alternator looks pretty new, before buying a new one i would check the connections between alt and battery, the way it looks with that huge wire it may be loose somewhere, also it looks like a fuse or something in the large wire up buy the battery maybe it is about to blow

That blue wire goes to a hood light I believe. It should be hot, the light will ground on hood. Generator "L" circuit is the battery warning lamp circuit. The regulator will ground the circuit to illuminate the light. Sometimes it is controlled by the PCM. If it sees the voltage below proper charging range the PCM will ground the circuit to turn on the warning light.
The bigger cables for the alt and ground is called the big 3 upgrade it's supposed to be for an upgraded sound system

I love my C5 and Maaco was the worse thing I ever did to it. ended up sanding the car down and wrapping it and yes thats an FRC Fixed Roof Coupe. The z06 is an FRC as well. And Service traction control....oooh hope it's not a pre 2001. If so good luck fixing it.
The harmonic balancer needs to be checked for C5 wobble. If cammed the factory balancer will get trashed
Maybe you need another channel, dedicated to the Diamonds in the Ruff, They are very exciting and im guessing alot of views.
Use 8115 panel Bond to repair .good stuff and you can use water to wash off hands

The top wires were for a stereo system, the little one by driver/HUD area looked like a NOS controller wire...
This vette is decent. Sounds like it might be cammed. Hopefully you can get a new alternator fast.

Randy I have a suspicion that the alternator may not be the right size I just checked rock auto and there’s two different ones. One says manual? I think it’s for the manual transmission and it’s a 145amp and the other one is only 110amps so possibly the previous owner had put the wrong one?
I found me a Limo in Oklahoma City for 7600.00 it was a 2016 with 40,000 miles in Mint Condition with a Bar in it and a reifer in the back with intercom. It is Blue, new tires fresh service. It made the ride back nice of course I got a driver with me. I drove it from Oklahoma City to Dallas and I rode in the back to Shreveport. Car has no damage anywhere and I got it at a Fire sale for pay off. The owner was very nice and a good Christian. The A/C is Ice cold. Got lucky but I would have rather had yours.

Maybe they put stock exhaust, threw in an old battery etc before auctioning off? Cam and long tube headers would've been more difficult to swap so they didn't bother. Anyway, seems amazing deal for 4k - any manual V8 is fun to drive let alone corvette.

Definitely has a cam. The C5 FRC is a sought after car. Just as fast, more comfortable, way more reliable and nicer looking than that Viper imho.
Just as fast?? The vipers top speed is 190 with a 0-60 of 3.9 the Corvette top speed is 175 with a 0-60 of 4.8-5.1. Viper eats the Corvette all day long. Corvette is 13.3 in the 1/4 mile Viper is 11.8.
@@AutoAuctionRebuilds Except that Vette isn’t stock. It’s probably pushing over 400hp to the wheels and a stock Z06 with 405HP is rated at 0-60 in 4.0 sec. I bet your Vette is faster than a stock C5 Z. Top speed is just limited by the tune and easily changed. You should run them side by side at a track and find out. Would make for great content.

Two things It does have a cam and that wire is indeed aftermarket Amp they usually run the wire like that
That stalling problem is a ground issue
Disconnect the fuse box to the system, it's probably grounding out somewhere in trunk
That optima may come back

all zo6 c5 models came with the hardtop. the c5 with the 5.7 and hardtop is more rare i would think.
the ticking is very normal for a cammed LS. It is cammed.
