    This video is about the stick welding portion of the 6g welding test with a monster coupon.
    I worked with instructor Kyle Lockwood -GA trade school.
    I tried to show different body positions and methods because there are many ways to go about a 6g stick welding test.
    The monster coupon is becoming more and more popular with welding employers because it provides a broader range of welding qualifications than most other standard wall thickness 6g pipe welding tests.

    Thank you Jodi I'm going to be taking this test next week at the Bruce Nuclear Plant up here in New York Kincardine Ontario Canada! I've been training welders for years and now I'm back out of retirement going to do the monster take all the way one day and then the next day TIG and stick finishing up the second test on the second day I hope all goes well! I have a daughter who's interested in welding I've already trained one of my six daughters nine years ago at Lambton College in Sarnia Ontario Canada and she passed the F3 F4 6G weld test and all position CWB plate test with me in one year and never had welded before! And when I asked her how did you do so well Kara she said Dad I just did what you showed me to do! Thanks again you are so awesome keep up the great work and I hope that the good Lord above keeps you well and safe through this pandemic!

    That pipe reminds me 25 years back when i was still welding. I had 6""heavy hall that i welded for 12:00hrs.I had x-rays between the layers and pre-heating on each. That was for me a every tirering job as i was new without experience. But guys what you are doing i appreciate very much. Keep up the good work.

    The best advice I can give on the stick is: use 3/32 less porosity, don’t weave your stringers, stagger your start n stops, and before you start find your destination welding finish point and then bend your body as far as you can comfortably to start and you should resurface to you finish point... everybody has there on techniques that’s the beauty of welding

    A tip I got a few years back, if you need to use pliers or clamps as a prop or any time they need to be close to the weld joint.. slap a coat of spray paint on them it helps keep the spatter from sticking to them espacially on the joints and threads.

    So I put a 90 degree bend in my rod right at the stinger. Then bend it into a big "U" shape, taking up the last quarter of the rod. Not gonna use it in a test anyway. Learned it from an old school pipe welder and it's super crazy how easy it makes it to roll up the pipe while keeping the correct angle.

    I was wondering what your thoughts are on starting all passes at the 6 o'clock position,, when I did my common arc test back in 09, the instructors told me it was better to start at 3 different spots to help smooth out the starts and finishes 5-6-7 o'clock. I had no problem with passing all 20 out 20 contractors inspections.

    I find some advantage to running my first 2 beads for each layer on the toe lines so your tie into the base metal is more of a lock, it is always easier to tie into previously deposited filler metal than base metal. You don't want squeezed out on a tie in and a crown is easier to deal with in the middle. Try propping on hand on top of pipe and welding with just one hand when going around a radius that small the hand that steadies you can be the hand that ties you up. Practice until you find what works for you!

  • @melaniew77msn
    @melaniew77msn Před 6 lety +6

    Some WPS will only let you weld in the field with the hand you test with, at Hobart they suggested learning to weld one side right and one side left to certify both of your hands. Small details like this can trickle down as to who gets hired. When I started in a factory people would pick fun at me for bending my rod. I would just smile knowing that they had always been flatlanders and never welded small diameter pipe!

      tyler Spencer in many situations working around obstacles it will give you the best body and sight position to weld with your ''off hand''. If you have dexterity issues with your off hand do simple task like eating, opening containers, washing dishes, typing then move to powered tools. You can teach yourself to use your off hand. After you get some build up start writing with your off hand, then you won't be far off from welding with it. If you were a cop I bet you would be able to shoot with both hands. Investing in yourself is always time well spent. It takes elite skills to earn an elite paycheck!

    So, when you were coming around to 12 o clock from 6, it looks like you are almost pushing the rod to keep up with the puddle. How much does the rod angle change from start to finish? (In reality. I'm sure in theory, it's supposed to stay the same) And if you are definitely pushing, is that a way to get porosity or lack of fusion?

I only aim center of pipe for that split second. Im low key welding pipe, like its structural. It works for me.

    Jody. Is it common practice to have all your tie ins at the same position? If I am following correctly all the time ins are at 6 and 12 O'clock. On a test would they look to see that the tie ins were at multiple locations and not all lined up? Does it depend on the test and the individual giving it?

    • @weldingtipsandtricks
      @weldingtipsandtricks  Před 6 lety +6

      it is best to stagger all tie ins a bit for appearance. For a small diameter bend test, you dont have much room to stagger them without risk of having tie ins on the bend straps. and yes it does depend on who is giving the test. they all have different preferences on root reinforcement, tack length, etc. sometimes its all in the procedure, other times you have to ask.

      Came here for this. Something about all those tie ins lined up on Kyle's piece was making me have the side-eye. I guess it's a good way to game the test since that's the most likely place for a flaw, best to limit them to one place so you know they aren't in the bend coupon. Smart.

    Hello dear, well done, but I have a small comment You have to take into account a very important point. Which is the end of welding, it should not be on the same straight

    Why don’t you grind out your starts and stops?

    Is it wise to have all your starts and stops in that same place? Or does it not make any real difference?

    • @joshwhite1268
      @joshwhite1268 Před 3 lety

      In the field it is not. On a test, sometimes it keeps the bend away from a start/stop.

    Love your videos. Why 3/32" rod on this? Is it a requirement of the test?

    • @soundslikealot
      @soundslikealot Před 6 lety

      I guess it's just because you need a lot of metal to be added actually on that "monster coupon".

    • @gasfiltered
      @gasfiltered Před 6 lety +1

      It may be so that the beads stack up to the right height. If the WPS calls for root, hot, then 2, 3, cap, using a 1/8 or 5/32 wouldn't work. Most pipe welding is done to API 1101, it may also be that by making more passes, this single weld test covers more possible sizes/configurations. I know in other codes, you can game the test specs this way to maximize what your test is good for.

    • @jwboilermaker
      @jwboilermaker Před 6 lety +1

      You could run 1/8” on that, but you better know what you’re doing. For that diameter and schedule, it’s a lot of heat buildup real quick.

    • @justinbenjamin4651
      @justinbenjamin4651 Před 6 lety

      It's mostly because you weld from overhead thru vertical and then basically flat at one amperage and 3/32 will look a lot nicer than 1/8 in stringers

    Are the gas cylinders safely secured where you do the outdoor demo (5 min mark)? From our viewpoint they appear to be freestanding. Separately, your welding videos are amazing and I have learned much. Keep up the good work!

      5 hrs to weld one butt what was you doing, leaving each pass to cool down so you could touch it with your bare hand??
      Come over to the UK and test out for Doosan Babcocks...:
      6" sched80 "J prep" 2 1/4 chrome Tig root/hot pass, stick fill and cap.
      2" sched80 2 1/4 chrome full tig restricted access in boiler jig full tig.
      2" s80 316 stainless purged, and another with closed gap and solar flux paste both full tig.
      Then finish off with 1/2" s80 tests one stainless, one chrome, one inconel.
      All caps left "as welded" ie no pissing about with files or grinders, any marks on them equals instant fail.
      All tests to be done in one 8hr day.

    Most trades stagger their joints. On these welds all starts are side by side. Is this your standard procedure or is it just a test thing ? Staggering the starts makes more sense to me. ?????

    • @WestCoastMods
      @WestCoastMods Před 6 lety +2

      You SHOULD always stagger your stops and starts....just saying from a 20yr Union #342 Pipe Welder
