This video is about the stick welding portion of the 6g welding test with a monster coupon.
I worked with instructor Kyle Lockwood -GA trade school.
I tried to show different body positions and methods because there are many ways to go about a 6g stick welding test.
The monster coupon is becoming more and more popular with welding employers because it provides a broader range of welding qualifications than most other standard wall thickness 6g pipe welding tests.

Small tip: before taking ANY welding test always change out your clear lenses to fresh ones. It makes a huge difference, at least for me 😁
Right!
Made that mistake before
Facts
God especially on making a restart on over head. Can’t see jack!
I’m taking my UA 21 in the morning & praying it goes well for my family’s sake.
We really need this one.
Thanks for the tips here.
Hope you did well, 140 brother!
Helped me pass my first test with dual shield flux core. This guy is truly an inspiration. Amazing welder.

I will always go back to Jody no matter how big the game is changing in these newer years.. this guy got me where I am today.. and I appreciate all the tips, they truly go so far.
Thank you Jodi I'm going to be taking this test next week at the Bruce Nuclear Plant up here in New York Kincardine Ontario Canada! I've been training welders for years and now I'm back out of retirement going to do the monster take all the way one day and then the next day TIG and stick finishing up the second test on the second day I hope all goes well! I have a daughter who's interested in welding I've already trained one of my six daughters nine years ago at Lambton College in Sarnia Ontario Canada and she passed the F3 F4 6G weld test and all position CWB plate test with me in one year and never had welded before! And when I asked her how did you do so well Kara she said Dad I just did what you showed me to do! Thanks again you are so awesome keep up the great work and I hope that the good Lord above keeps you well and safe through this pandemic!
That pipe reminds me 25 years back when i was still welding. I had 6""heavy hall that i welded for 12:00hrs.I had x-rays between the layers and pre-heating on each. That was for me a every tirering job as i was new without experience. But guys what you are doing i appreciate very much. Keep up the good work.
Like one of my instructor said to me once '''Old your stinger like you old your beer'', after that comment learning pipe welding became so much easier.
Love your videos. My son just recently graduated from Georgia Trade School. Kyle is an amazing welder.
The best advice I can give on the stick is: use 3/32 less porosity, don’t weave your stringers, stagger your start n stops, and before you start find your destination welding finish point and then bend your body as far as you can comfortably to start and you should resurface to you finish point... everybody has there on techniques that’s the beauty of welding
So don't weave on the fill at all?
@@favelflav4223 yea if you’re new to welding or trying to understand how to be proficient at the craft don’t weave until you’re comfortable at weaving to fill up.
@@favelflav4223 never.
Thanks for going a bit into detail, about body positioning and foot shuffles, no one in school ever spoke about this very important topics.
Thank you for making these educational welding videos. I studied them and have used your techniques to provide for my family and grow in the pipe trade.
😎👨🏭🤩
Thanks Jody. I appreciate wealth of knowledge you provide on this channel.
I just got my acceptance letter for Boilermakers apprenticeship. I really want to have this my first common ark. You bead placement was good 👍
Great video. Really like the explanation for doing a restart on the bottom of the pipe as well as the excellent video of same. Really helpful. Thanks
A tip I got a few years back, if you need to use pliers or clamps as a prop or any time they need to be close to the weld joint.. slap a coat of spray paint on them it helps keep the spatter from sticking to them espacially on the joints and threads.
So I put a 90 degree bend in my rod right at the stinger. Then bend it into a big "U" shape, taking up the last quarter of the rod. Not gonna use it in a test anyway. Learned it from an old school pipe welder and it's super crazy how easy it makes it to roll up the pipe while keeping the correct angle.
I think it's easy to say that your the best welder on youtube....
A lot of Boilermakers would coathanger their rod and go from 6 to 12 in one rod, and maintain rod position throughout the test.
I do.
My brother told me to check you out in 2017 and I just hired on with my first boiler company and could do a little fitting and mig welding, I could barely get a tack with a stick rod and I took what he shows in his videos and applied it in the field and at home and I now have 2 6G heavy walls, tig root and hot and stick all the way out, under my belt and one 6G schedule 40 tig all the way out, and 2 plate tests vertical and overhead stick all the way out. Thankful for people like Jodi😎 I have a CZcams channel also if you wanna see some of the shenanigans you’ll get into🤙🏼
I was wondering what your thoughts are on starting all passes at the 6 o'clock position,, when I did my common arc test back in 09, the instructors told me it was better to start at 3 different spots to help smooth out the starts and finishes 5-6-7 o'clock. I had no problem with passing all 20 out 20 contractors inspections.
Great stuff Jody! if folks are serious about passing these tests,, this is gold. Funny how clear lense lasts longer now that I'm bit older.... lol
Cool Jody, love to see this pipe cut along the length and etched to see the deposit:)
Stopping all your passes in the same spot is a good way to get porosity, most tests I have been involved with require a 6010 5p root.
Yep those are the machines I learned on...I like my arc force higher, have no idea why either...+3ish depending on what I'm doing.
I had a mettallurgy professor from India, and I loved to hear him say "butter the base metal" lol.
Remember to have fun!
lol
This is one of the best of your videos and I like your last comment. Do it right so you can go out and support your family. Thanks.
I find some advantage to running my first 2 beads for each layer on the toe lines so your tie into the base metal is more of a lock, it is always easier to tie into previously deposited filler metal than base metal. You don't want squeezed out on a tie in and a crown is easier to deal with in the middle. Try propping on hand on top of pipe and welding with just one hand when going around a radius that small the hand that steadies you can be the hand that ties you up. Practice until you find what works for you!
Makes sense
Where are some recommendations to get tig/stick equipment other then air gas
Some WPS will only let you weld in the field with the hand you test with, at Hobart they suggested learning to weld one side right and one side left to certify both of your hands. Small details like this can trickle down as to who gets hired. When I started in a factory people would pick fun at me for bending my rod. I would just smile knowing that they had always been flatlanders and never welded small diameter pipe!
tdej80 good info!! Didn't know that! Thx!

tdej80 if I get to a job that ever tries that I'll go ahead and just cash out right then. Screw that
tyler Spencer in many situations working around obstacles it will give you the best body and sight position to weld with your ''off hand''. If you have dexterity issues with your off hand do simple task like eating, opening containers, washing dishes, typing then move to powered tools. You can teach yourself to use your off hand. After you get some build up start writing with your off hand, then you won't be far off from welding with it. If you were a cop I bet you would be able to shoot with both hands. Investing in yourself is always time well spent. It takes elite skills to earn an elite paycheck!
I test with both hands just depends on how I'm felling don't make a fuck to me.
That Northern Tool utility blower is pure freakin' genius! Add the hose, and who needs a fume extractor!
Boiler maker shuffle used it many times on test day.
my test is next friday!
Great video love the tig finger Pak I got from you
I always ask them if they are going to eat it when there face is that close lol great video
So, when you were coming around to 12 o clock from 6, it looks like you are almost pushing the rod to keep up with the puddle. How much does the rod angle change from start to finish? (In reality. I'm sure in theory, it's supposed to stay the same) And if you are definitely pushing, is that a way to get porosity or lack of fusion?
Brandon Parry think 5-10degrees of margin on either side you can play with
The ol boilermaker shuffle 😎👍🏼
tank you veri good video from puerto rico. yes sr with 20 years old you can see the arc very close but after 40 its hard.
Great video man, I salute you!! 🙌👍
hy dude...I want to knw about price of plasma cuttin mechin....pls help
YOU'RE AWESOME!!!!!!.......Thanks so much for your time and effort. I've made 2 videos so far and it takes SO MUCH TIME TO EDIT!!!!! I've helped build power plants here in Vegas ... 4 over 2 Natural gas HRSGs and the welding process is so cool ..... from prep, to welding, to cooling the weld. etc. Thanks again!!!~ GBYAY!!!
Can u make a video on how to star on top of your star on the bottom off the pipe
"If you can see it, get on it!" How true. Great video.
What’s the best way to prevent porosity when restarting?
sorry I missed the first... was there back gas on the first pass?
i like to leave mine just a touch low when doing the filler pass that way i can stack beads nice and tight
ive done this test and ill have 8 passes for the cap
what welder was being used? that’s the welder i used back in school when i was learning, i miss using that machine. i can’t remember what model it is

It’s interesting to see such a young guy as the instructor.
Ryan Jones yeah its good for him! My college hired one of the students to teach after he graduated as well.
Good Stuff!!

Juanito Rdz looks real nice man. I just don’t do Instagram.
Ryan Jones not really,I'm not even fully out of school yet and was already given the green light to come back and teach at my local trade school...some people can just pick up all the Nuances of the trade and then you have some that struggle...I'm not young but I'm certainly not old (going on 31) but I have no prior experience with welding beside what I'm doing now (A.A.S. degree student).I was an army grease monkey b4 going to school for welding..best choice I've ever made...its hot,you get burnt, but it's my passion.some people are just made to do this line of work.
Personally I wouldn't want to learn how to weld from an instructor just out of school with no real world experience. You might be able to make pretty welds in ideal shop conditions, but in the field you rarely get that.
Once again thanks for your video.
Thank you Jodi
very good information.... that 6g position joint, tig + E7018 done by asme IX standards is the real thing!!! keep it up brother... greetings from brazil!!!
Another couple to have a go at, are a 6g test using 7016 lowhy for all passes including root pass and another is a 6g stainless stick test.
Jodi what program do you use to edit your vids?
Thanks again Jody
i love your work!
I'm a recent GA Trade School grad 😁😁😁
Very impormative info to the welder like me thank you for sharing your video👍
Thanks a million!
سيدي العزيز السلام عليكم أنا من العراق ومعجب جدا على دروسك القيمة .مع كل التقدير والاحترام
الراجل ده فنان . بيشتغل جميع انواع اللحام ب مهارة انا معجب بيه جدا
Haha.. That footwork!! Shuffle away man..
I love your videos. Only thing I do differently is, I never aim center of pipe all the way. Im oscillating and Im always at an angle. When I get to the top, Im at a backwards angle like Im welding flat. Up the side, I have a push angle. I go from a drag angle to a push angle at about 5 o clock. I only aim center of pipe for that split second. Im low key welding pipe, like its structural. It works for me.
You don’t preheat the coupon?
HO!!! I see the cheating enhanced and stretched tig finger becomes the tig hole hand! Love you videos man! best of wishes.

Thank you
Thank you Jodi I'm going to do it today LOL forgive my misspelling in the first message
As I'm sure ya'll aware, some facilities require staggering, some don't. I've had to test both ways.
awesome lesson! thank u! (did you turn down ur amps as the pipe warmed up? maybe if you re-did this without jumping all over it’d be even better…there’s so many welding school students out there right now you’d get a million views in a couple days!)
Доброго времени суток, все как всегда аккуратно и красиво, только, почему на облицовке(усилении)замки расположены в одной линии?
Very nice video 👍🏼🇺🇸 super coupons are our test we do at our company 😁
Stagger your stops on the cover pass as well
from colombia ,is very good thanks.
I have to do a TIG root 7018 out. No hot pass.
Did you clean the outside of the pipe or was it already clean before you put the cover passes on? The reason why I ask is because I'm getting a lot of porosity when I running a cap.
Chris Cole you should always get the mill scale off of the exterior of the tube I always do that when initially prepping the tube I'm surprised they didn't do that in the video
Awesome work really appreciate what you do. Is that a new sign in the beginning of the video? JD maybe... Or are you in the plasma table game now.
JD made that for me
The pic at the end of your friend from the trade school, Kyle, he didnt stagger his stops!
I noticed that too a definate fail on some test.
Yes sir thanks so much 🙏
Olá quasso the procedure heating of rais filling come the o finish
Jody. Is it common practice to have all your tie ins at the same position? If I am following correctly all the time ins are at 6 and 12 O'clock. On a test would they look to see that the tie ins were at multiple locations and not all lined up? Does it depend on the test and the individual giving it?
it is best to stagger all tie ins a bit for appearance. For a small diameter bend test, you dont have much room to stagger them without risk of having tie ins on the bend straps. and yes it does depend on who is giving the test. they all have different preferences on root reinforcement, tack length, etc. sometimes its all in the procedure, other times you have to ask.
Thanks for the reply Jody. I learn something in all your videos. I also love the Honesty. Can't always be easy so i respect it even more.
Came here for this. Something about all those tie ins lined up on Kyle's piece was making me have the side-eye. I guess it's a good way to game the test since that's the most likely place for a flaw, best to limit them to one place so you know they aren't in the bend coupon. Smart.
I dont know the answer , but good luck on your test.. !
On an X-Ray test, it’s best to stagger the starts out a little so if you get porosity, you don’t exceed the allowable amount. If it’s a bend test, every start on the bottom, just make sure it’s clean
Does weaving increase the chances of slag being trapped inside the weld and busting x-ray? Or does the welding pool burn all that out?
Flint Aloha-Snahkbah you’ll bust out most tests if they see you weaving. If you do it cannot be more than 3x the width of the rod.
Nice cap!
Pipe thickness?
sir i have a question :- can i use gas welding filler rod as a filler rod to tig welding for carbon steel, here 2 thing are same and 1 diff ie; filler rod and materiel to be welded but only welding machine is change, pleas let me know

Awe man, just got my stubby bundle in today, can’t wait to try it out tomorrow on some 2”! Thanks for the 2%Lanthanated sticks, been wanting to try it out, got some on the way next week! And a little shout out to Tulsa Houston campus and the BA instructors
What is this called by the aws and what jobs does it qualify you for job wise
redbone fabrication IBB boilermaker common arc carbon and stainless tube
Hello dear, well done, but I have a small comment You have to take into account a very important point. Which is the end of welding, it should not be on the same straight
Why don’t you grind out your starts and stops?
Yours looked better i think jody😎just saying lol you still got it man!!
Is it wise to have all your starts and stops in that same place? Or does it not make any real difference?
In the field it is not. On a test, sometimes it keeps the bend away from a start/stop.
Should the starts and stops be slightly staggered?
Yes
I never see one nozzle transparent in Brazil, here all of us using a ceramic nozzle
Love your videos. Why 3/32" rod on this? Is it a requirement of the test?
I guess it's just because you need a lot of metal to be added actually on that "monster coupon".
It may be so that the beads stack up to the right height. If the WPS calls for root, hot, then 2, 3, cap, using a 1/8 or 5/32 wouldn't work. Most pipe welding is done to API 1101, it may also be that by making more passes, this single weld test covers more possible sizes/configurations. I know in other codes, you can game the test specs this way to maximize what your test is good for.
You could run 1/8” on that, but you better know what you’re doing. For that diameter and schedule, it’s a lot of heat buildup real quick.
It's mostly because you weld from overhead thru vertical and then basically flat at one amperage and 3/32 will look a lot nicer than 1/8 in stringers
Are the gas cylinders safely secured where you do the outdoor demo (5 min mark)? From our viewpoint they appear to be freestanding. Separately, your welding videos are amazing and I have learned much. Keep up the good work!
Becky Jody I'm going to do it today
I’ve passed this test. Took 5 hours to weld out
5 hrs to weld one butt what was you doing, leaving each pass to cool down so you could touch it with your bare hand??
Come over to the UK and test out for Doosan Babcocks...:
6" sched80 "J prep" 2 1/4 chrome Tig root/hot pass, stick fill and cap.
2" sched80 2 1/4 chrome full tig restricted access in boiler jig full tig.
2" s80 316 stainless purged, and another with closed gap and solar flux paste both full tig.
Then finish off with 1/2" s80 tests one stainless, one chrome, one inconel.
All caps left "as welded" ie no pissing about with files or grinders, any marks on them equals instant fail.
All tests to be done in one 8hr day.
@@kf8575 Holy cow. Just one thing . What is " 2 1/4 chrome root "
Big test Monday chem plant wish me luck boys
Most trades stagger their joints. On these welds all starts are side by side. Is this your standard procedure or is it just a test thing ? Staggering the starts makes more sense to me. ?????
You SHOULD always stagger your stops and starts....just saying from a 20yr Union #342 Pipe Welder
