  • Stellan Skarsgård gained critical acclaim for his portrayal of Boris Yevdokimovich Shcherbina in the 2019 HBO Chernobyl TV series, a tough and imposing man, very self-confident and moulded by the Communist Party. But the show doesn’t touch on the backstory that turned him into such a person, nor focuses on the specifics of how he worked in the liquidation, so let’s explore that story today.

My grandfather studied with Shcherbina at the institute. He described Shcherbina as a talented and honest person.

This right here, is why I look forward to Saturday evenings. So many new details you do not hear or see elsewhere, especially the pictures of his younger years. I have never seen these anywhere else. He truly was a remarkable man that did not shy away from responsibilities. I remember reading that he scolded the higher-ups; "You're all very good at blowing up reactors, but lousy at filling sandbags!" And had a general shovelling sand in his finest dress uniform along with some minister^^

21:41 His life maybe said to be in dark but you brought up his work and life existence to light.
From how I see you telling of his story, his passion to see better quality for the party/country he served is truly outstanding in his own way I guess.
14:29 As usual people in power easily brush off responsibility when something wrong happen to lesser worker/rank to thrown into pit.
Truly appreciate the work you put in making this video at YT for people like me to... I guess.. hear it out or interested to know about.

20:29 - The gopnik-like dance-moves by the guy in the red shirt had me rolling on the floor, LOL! The more professionally dressed guy with grey hair also had some sick moves. Thanks for making these videos mate, and respecting the persons you discuss, no matter if they were criminals, could be blamed for something or innocent - or something in between. They may have made bad decisions, but they are only human. Doesn't matter if Russian, British or American, we should all be friends. Yes, maybe I think like a child, I know politics can become profoundly complicated, but why not have one world government?
With climate change (if you even believe in that, but every scientific-minded person will), we have other issues at hand than dumb political debates.
Rest in peace Shcherbina, he seemed like a guy with good intentions, and thank you, Chernobyl Guy, from the bottom of my heart for yet another great mini-documentary.

@@markusw7833It's not like it's super hard to acquire guns in some European countries, take the Czech Republic for example, since 2023 you can own any gun without a license, given that you have gone through a brief medical check up. In my country, Germany, it's much harder, you have to join a gun club, get trained, and eventually after 1-2 years you can get your license. You are still not permitted to carry the gun in any type of concealed way, that requires even more legislative bullshit, and money - completely unlike the Czech republic, where over 75% of gun owners have a concealed carry license by default.

He was lucky to survive his service during the Winter War. The hastily put together ski units of the Red Army were thrown into the Finnish forests with no clear plan to back them up if they met their objectives. Most were scattered after failing to surprise the Finnish forces and either killed in action or died of hypothermia. Perhaps Shcherbina was luckier than most of he was in an NKVD unit, as they were not used for combat operations, more as an ideological "military police".
