Half Lives: Aleksandr Akimov - At the Helm of Chernobyl

  • The person steering Chernobyl Unit Four to its scheduled shutdown on the night of April 26th, 1986, was not Anatoly Dyatlov, as considered by many, but the Shift Supervisor Aleksandr Akimov. It was he who made many of the difficult decisions that night, all of which culminated in the explosion and race to prevent a worse accident from occurring, ultimately costing his life.
    But who was Akimov, really? Was he the easily swayed man depicted in the HBO TV miniseries, the complete opposite, or somewhere in between? I’ll let you be the judge of this.
    The background art in the thumbnail of this video is the "Shipwreck of The Chernobyl Titanic" by Alexey Breus, who was present in the Control Room the morning after the explosion.

    Rest in peace to this man. He cared about his co workers, his job, and his family. He likely died the worst death you could possibly imagine. He did what he could.

    I wish I could give a hug to Akimov. He was a good guy caught in a terrible situation, and didn't think twice to give his life to try to mitigate the situation

    Thank you for another well-done video. Akimov looks like the kind of guy I could have easily been good friends with. He and Toptunov conducted themselves in the highest order after the accident. They, most certainly Akimov, must have been aware that going into the pipe room to open the valves would come at a very, very steep price, but did so regardless. May their souls rest in peace...

    i dont usually comment but its weird, i just found this channel through the iceberg video and now you just uploaded a new one?? wow appreciate the effort and time put into these considering regular uploads are no joke. keep up the good work!! also 1 in 10 million per year?!? if that quote from him is indeed credible, it aged poorly sadly… and how come they let that smear campaign with this book pass by? there must be many more books written about chernobyl, so why this one was used as a source i still dont get it. perhaps officials directed him to wrote it because maybe it fits their narrative? idk sorry if i sound very ignorant now

      People's attentiveness to detail is often not great. Even authors who write on Chernobyl misunderstand great many things and use that book as a source. Craig Mazin, the creator of the popular HBO/Sky mini-series, even relied on it. That's what I like about Chernobyl. Due to the lying and deception involved you find out who's actually incisive and who coasts on people's stupidity.

    I must admit that I still don't know what really was the cause of this desaster, but perhaps one day you will do a definite "How it happened" video.
    Looking forward to more ...

      @danielle3064 Před 2 měsíci +2

      I've been looking for one but that's because there is not a definitive story. There are a lot of unanswered questions that will probably never be found out. Moscow took the tapes of audio recordings. And other things went up with the explosion or died with the operators. But the two main issues were 1) the graphite displacers and 2) the xenon poisoning of the reactor from the delayed test. 3) Soviet overconfidence and lack of safety culture. It was a matter of all the cursed dominos being lined up just perfectly. There have been a lot of accidents that were covered up. So it's not actually that unlikely that this did happen.

      Maybe not ask repeatedly. If he wants to, he will. But this might be his focus. And it’s not nice to push for people to do things you want. Find other channels that do other things if you want more documentary series. I’m sure you’ll find someone. Who focuses on that.

    Even in the most fair and impartial trial, Akimov would have faced accountability and questions. He wasn’t just a guy pressing buttons on command. T There were things that happened way before and after that moment of the AZ 5 button that called for answers. By no means does his bio show a dumb ignorant spineless guy with no personality, but that creates other problems.
