If a woman has had 1 or more miscarriages, can anything be done to prevent another miscarriage?

  • So when a patient comes in to discuss a problem of recurrent miscarriage, they typically have had, as I mentioned previously, two or three clinically apparent miscarriages occurring after a missed menstrual period, and most typically, before around 10 or 11 weeks from their last period. So I start by telling the patient that the cause of her problem is probably multi-factorial, as is the cause of most human diseases. That is to say she probably, she and her husband or partner, probably don't have one single glaring problem that should be identified and fixed, so to speak, but likely have a combination of several problems, or perhaps even many problems that are relatively small, not single dominant issues, but that conspire to predispose the patient, or the couple, to miscarriage. By the way, male contributions to this issue are poorly understood. That's a burgeoning area of science right now. Almost certainly, there are important male contributions, but as of right this minute in medicine, they are poorly understood, and evaluations of recurrent miscarriages do not typically involve male factor evaluations. That's in contrast to, say, infertility.
I then go on to explain to the patient there are a couple of fairly dominant causes of recurrent miscarriage that should be ruled out. And typically, they're ruled out, not ruled in. One would be a uterine malformation, something the patient was born with, probably doesn't recognize, but in her case, the uterus is malformed from birth. And uterine malformation is identified by an imaging study that enables physicians to look at the interior contours of the uterus, like a sonohysterogram or a hysterosalpingogram. Another dominant reason that experts agree on is antiphospholipid syndrome. And that's an autoimmune condition in which the patient's immune system seems to attack the placenta, or that's the best way to think about it. It's an area of active research. Patients are identified as having that by the mother, the woman, having blood tests to look for autoantibodies. Experts also agree that, rarely, a couple with recurrent miscarriage will have a chromosome abnormality either in the female or the male partner, and that chromosome abnormality isn't affecting their status as an adult in terms of activity or intellect, but rather has a dramatic effect on the chromosome complement of the gametes, that is the sperm or the eggs. So that's an infrequent (but real) cause of recurrent miscarriage.
What's important for the average couple to recognize is that recurrent miscarriage is usually of no single dominant reason, something I mentioned at the beginning of my comment. Patients with no single dominant reason found in their evaluation are in good stead, and that's very important to recognize. Something like 65% or 70% of relatively young couples, under age 35 or so, who have recurrent miscarriage of the sort I've described will have a successful next pregnancy. Those are pretty good numbers. People need to understand that so they'll feel better about their next pregnancy attempt, I would argue. They may be disappointed that medicine doesn't have that single focus explanation and treatment to provide them, but the reality of the science is that they'll likely do well and be able to have a family. Part of the reason I see couples with recurrent miscarriage is to encourage them to think clearly about their reproductive future.

I can relate. I’m a wife and mother of a 7 1/2 year old, whom I had naturally and miraculously at age 46. The 2nd time I became pregnant I 52 and I was of course wonderfully surprised. Yes, and it natural without any help from man, but God was the one did it, who allowed me to conceive. However, sadly experienced a miscarriage Dec. 10 into 11 of 2021. I cried and cried 😢 wishing, hoping, praying there was a way I could stop it. But the Lord knows why. However, even in my pain I asked the Lord to heal my mind, my heart. He did in a very short period of time.
As a Word of encouragement the Lord Scripture says the following for us women, Verse: 13 “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.
Verse:14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
Verse:15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Verse:16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.” (Psalm 139:13-16).
Yes, the Lord can do the impossible, “He maketh the barren woman) to keep house, and to (be a joyful mother of children). Praise ye the LORD.” (Psalm 113:9).
Next, “Lo, (children are an heritage) of the LORD: and (the fruit of the womb) is his reward.” (Psalm 127:3). Also, for those already have at least one child or several children“ Train up a (child) in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6).
“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:15).
Finally, for, the youth or young adults, “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy (youth),…” (Ecclesiastes 12:1). Also, when they need Godly counsel to keep them on the right path, “Wherewithal shall a (young man) cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.” (Psalm 119:6) ❤
May the Lord continue to give grace and comfort the many women who may never have had a child before, including those who became mothers, but who are experiencing fertility issues or who have had miscarriages, making it difficult to have another child. When it happened to me, I never would have believed it to happen to me, but God knows. We live in a sinful world and due the Eve’s original sin at creation, we all suffer because of it.
However, God’s grace will see us through, especially for those who receive Christ as Lord and Savior. God is still doing great things, in spite of test, trials and disappointments in this life. God is still good and has blessed us even though we experience this misfortune. He has better things in store for all His believing children in the earth made new. Read (Isaiah 65:17-19) and Revelation 21:1-4). See R E K L A M A T I O N

I disagree. I feel like a lot of the time males could play a role. It seems assumed it’s mainly due to the woman since her body is carrying the fetus. I know a female who had reoccurring miscarriages with her then husband. Now that she’s married to a different man, she has had no issue carrying a child.

tahira mohamed I've had two miscarriages. Both women that I have been with have had miscarriages. The man could have bad sperm. I believe that my sperm is not strong enough or is giving the incorrect amount of chromosomes needed for a healthy pregnancy. If your body senses that there is something wrong, then it will not continue the pregnancy. I will go to a fertility clinic to check if my sperm is not good. It could be the man's fault not just yours. Miscarriage is a horrible thing to go through. I hope you feel better soon
