Should I be worried that my baby's umbilical cord has only 1 artery instead of 2?

- The question, what to do with an incidental finding of single umbilical artery at the time of a mid-trimester fetal ultrasound, is a good one. And for that matter, there are quite a number of other somewhat similar ultrasound findings that might be very disturbing to a couple. So I like to remind couples that many such findings by ultrasound are of fairly limited clinical importance. They're not of no clinical importance, but they don't carry the grave implications that couples may immediately think. Single umbilical artery is one such finding, and so it's a good example. The finding of one rather than two arteries in the umbilical cord of the fetus is probably the single most common vascular abnormality in man. It usually pans out to not mean anything, and that's what is important to recall. No question that single umbilical artery is associated with an increased risk of certain problems, but we're talking about relatively small magnitude increased risks, so that the majority of babies with a single umbilical artery will be normal at birth. There are some things that we do to be sure of that on the way to delivery, that's our job. But I think couples need to recall that infrequently is single umbilical artery actually linked to a major medical problem.
I found out my baby had a single umbilical artery at our first measurement scan. Baby was born 5 days past due with no complications. Was 8lbs 2oz. Please don’t stress if you’ve received the same news. ❤ you got this mamas!

My son had a single umbilical artery and was 9 pounds and birth and now ranks in the 99% for weight (23lbs at 5 months lol he’s the size of a 12 month old!)
I remember looking up these videos while pregnant and back to tell you it’s going to be okay ❤

My daughter born on last Sunday ( 04/12/22) with SUA. At the time of birth her weight was 3.2 kg , sugar level was 12, but after 2 days it's normal range, now she is fine.

@@laniasmith07 she’s currently 3 pounds but has no organ or physical problems Thank God !! She’s a little behind growth, but I’m only 4’11 so that’s probably why she’s so small she’s healthy & almost here ! I feel her move everyday ! I have about 8 weeks left before I pop ! 💕

My baby had an SUA, she weighed very little in my belly only 3 lbs the last time before i went into labor. But she was perfectly healthy. She still weighs little but to me is normal. I remember thinking I was going to loose her while I was pregnant.

My doctor told me my baby's cord only has 2 vessels not 3 which is normal. I'm worried about him 😔
When I was pregnant at 24 weeks I went into premature labor and lost my baby boy. I was high risk after finding out. My ultimate diagnosis was placenta abrasion but I do believe my baby being only two vessel cord made my pregnancy have complications. It was the hardest time in my life.

Your response was very good. Sounds like you know when a baby has a SUA. Our baby had a normal scan at 20 weeks.I Spent 5 minutes with the MD to hear picture perfect pregnancy. At 28 weeks the baby was not moving, having decelerations and did not pass the non stress test. They said come back in a week. At week 29 our baby was dead. She had a SUA, long umbilical cord at 76cm and hyper coiled. The 20 week scan stated 3 vessel cord. Our baby was otherwise normal.Technology is only as good at the doctor reviewing it. Medicine has changed and will only get worse. Our medical records have become just checks in a box and the entire visit progress note has been reduced to one sentence. Hence what I call the dumbing down of medicine!

After my son was born the dr had a nurse come over and "look" he showed her the ubilical cord and said "there's two" and they kinda shrugged and went on there way! 3 years later My son diagnosed with Duchennes muscular Dystrophy he is now 9 years old!! I tried asking the dr about it but he didn't remember!

My wife and I were just informed our unborn child has SUA. This was informed to us when we went to perform our 20 wk ultrasound. We also learned the sex of the baby.
The Doctor, however, informed that there are no other issues and that everything else is ok. But, they'd like to do weekly ultrasounds to make sure my wife is not at risk for Still Born.
What was supposed to be a very joyous moment, turned out to be a sad moment.
