Good morning from Seacoast NH! Vida, this was the best video I have ever seen about Delphiniums! This is my 3rd year of seed planting and through a bunch of videos I watched this winter I ended up doing 90% of what you just explained. However, I still learned so much from you. Thank you! You’ve also taught me so much about harvesting seeds. I believe we live somewhat nearby each other and if you would ever want to meet and trade our harvested seeds … that would be great! 😃

This seed is still a big challenge for me. I used your method for starting delphinium and Bells of Ireland. It worked for the Bells but, as of yet, not for the delphinium. I did winter sow delphinium and I have two seedlings to show for it so far. I'm not giving up. Also, I did not know it had a taproot. Thank you for such an informative video!
I'm sorry to hear that you are still struggling with getting the Delphinium to germinate. I like your attitude with not giving up, though. 💪🏼 You got this! Next winter, I will do more experimenting with harder to grow plants such as this one and hope to find an even better way to get them germinated. I'll be sure to share my findings. ♥
You explained everything better than anyone else! Just bought 2 paks of seeds and live in the south. Thinking maybe I need to wait till fall and direct sow.
Thanks so much! ♥ You can always mimic the cold, moist stratification period using your fridge and after that plant out your seeds in the landscape (just mark where you plant them). It may be worth experimenting with a few of your seeds. Also, be sure to keep that area watered. Happy gardening, friend! 😊🌻
I saved seeds from a dark blue delphinium and winter sowed some, still waiting. I'm in NW Ohio. Praying for God's blessing on my effort. Yours look great!
We germinated seeds in a covered plastic tray, using the paper towels as you did. The mixed variety have a few seedlings, the blue ones have not yet germinated. We will move them to a cool spot, as we didn't know that liked that
It seems that Delphinium seeds do well with a week or two of cool temps. I'll be doing an update video soon showing my process for potting up the seedlings. 😊♥
Yours is the best video/information I’ve seen about starting Pacific Hybrids. I’ve come to the conclusion that various delphinium types require different strategies and most people don’t specify what type they are starting from seed. I think Larkspur is different than Delphinium though, even though a lot of people use the names interchangeably. I had previously tried the baggy method (cold moist) but then got lost as to whether to plant them up immediately or not. Thanks to you I now know to put the baggy under the grow light and wait. Thanks for taking the time to explain (and show) everything so clearly.

Hello, Really enjoyed your video, I have struggled over last 2 years to get germination and now know it's been too warm. I've tried your method and it works and have 8 of 10 seeds so far, so thank you. It would be helpful in future to give temperatures in Celsius and Fahrenheit as over here in UK we use the metric system 60F = 15-16C. (Lots of You Tubers from USA forget they have Global audience👍)

Hi Kathy! Great idea. I'll be following your lead and will be doing the same with certain seeds like Lupine. The seeds will get the natural cold stratification period that they need during the winter and should then germinate next Spring. The big thing to keep in mind is that the seeds are out of our control once we put them outside. Certain things can affect seeds from not germinating, such as animals disturbing/eating the seeds, too much moisture, etc. But it's worth a try! Happy gardening, friend. 😊🌺

I planted some delphinium on my unheated covered side porch in early May, it’s May 23 now. I’m in south central PA. They took about two weeks to sprout. I didn’t do anything special. I had no idea they were tricky to sprout. We did have very chilly nighttime temperatures when I did it. Maybe that was it.
It could be that they liked it out there since it may have been cold enough to help them sprout. That's great that you had success with that method. I may have to try something like that. Thank you for sharing! 🌺
I used the moist paper towel method for 4 weeks in the refrigerator. None of the seeds germinated on the towel, but I went ahead and put them in a jiffy starter kit using pelets under a grow light. Within 3 days I got sprouts. Within a week almost all of them sprouted. I kept left over seeds in the refrigerator and by week 5 I had signs of germination on the towel. Question for you: when should I remove the humidity dome? When they are tall enough to hit the cover or when most sprouted? Thanks
It sounds like you had a similar experience as me in that none germinated in the fridge originally. It's almost like they stay dormant in the fridge but as soon as you bring them out to the warmth they start waking up. You'd want to remove the humidity dome when at least 50% of them have sprouted, so you'd want to do that now. How exciting that you have so many Delphinium! Yay!! 😊💜

I have the seeds in my refrigerator for months. I think I'm going to plant them late fall straight in the soil outside.

The taproot info is so good! I’ve tried winter sowing, but they rotted before it was warm enough to transplant.

I use a blueberry or strawberry plastic container to put my ziplock bags in. This way nothing gets thrown on top and damages the seeds in the bag.
