  • This one requires a bit of patience! I promise the cuteness at the end is worth it though đŸ„° It’s a great example of how the buttons augment the natural non-verbal communication of a feline interacting with a human. I also stan a mischievous Billi đŸ˜č
    Billi is a female domestic shorthair, she's 13 years old, her favorite word is mad.
    Inspiration for learning to “speak” with buttons from Hunger4Words (check her out on IG).

    I think she might also be using "come" as "follow" when she wants you to follow her physically or follow where she is directing her attention, so "come look" is "follow me and look (at the outside/leaves)"

    Shes so intelligent that I sometimes tend to forget that she is a cat after all and might want to roll in the leaves and chase birds once in a while. Thats exactly want she wanted, but she didnt have the word for "doing cat things". I have been watching her progress for quite some time now and Ive noticed something about her. She usually doesnt spam buttons, She takes her time and carefully gives inputs. But when she doesnt have a button for a word, the panic button smash comes in. "look, look, look, come, watch"

    That was amazing. Billi doing what she can to get outside to investigate that very intriguing leaf pile. I had a calico cat many years ago that used to hide in piles of autumn leaves because they camouflaged her at the bottom of trees. She would then wait patiently until a squirrel got too close and POUNCE!! Fortunately, she only made contact once. Scared all three of us. But, the leaf stalking continued.
    I was surprised that Billi wasn't MAD that you cut her bird stalking..err I mean bird watching short. Perhaps she thinks she can get back outside another time to "look at the leaves" and try again to rid the world of those dangerous flying dinosaurs.

I literally sat outside with him every night on the couch under cover and wrapped him in blankets and kept him dry. I had the capacity, and it was the best time hanging out together. He passed away last year at the age of 20, and I’m grateful for every moment we shared. He was my best little buddy. Billi reminds me of him in a way, I think it’s the intelligence and communication. Heheh, my girl does the same thing when I bring her inside after a walk. She hates coming back in, so she'll grumble and growl about it. Sometimes when it's too cold for her to go out, I'll just hold her outside the screen door, so she can at least look out for a while. But if I indulger her too long, she'll start growling and hissing, angry that I'm not _actually_ letting her outside. If Sadako had the choice, she'd be a little ragamuffin homeless cat. But she doesn't, so the poor thing has to endure warmth and shelter. XD

      that something i have trouble with, my cat always andwill be going as they please, i just keep them in for two to thre month in so they understand that we are family now, then they can go have a walk outside wild and unleashed, i'd rather have them die by accident than sorrow and boredom from beeing locked in doors, even i can't lock my bedroom window fo more than a few hours when its freezing cold outside, luckily the worst we'd havee recently was -4°C still felt quite cosy in mylittle room, i'd say 11 is best
      Edit : i try to adopt around the start of winter so the 2-3month locked in doesn't feel like restrain but cosyness/shelter, we also notice the cat will bond to the one he/she/it spent the first night with, either by choice or not

    • @MadamFoogie
      @MadamFoogie Pƙed 2 lety +13

      @@zistorbar It's your choice, but I feel like having indoor/outdoor cats creates too much risk, in the long term. Their lifespan will typically be halved. They're more exposed to infectious disease from other cats, most notably distemper and feline AIDS. They are also likely to suffer injury at some point. Territorial disputes and animal attacks happen all too often. In my opinion, there are other more compromising solutions that will help your cats stay safe, and also remain stimulated.
      You could take your cats out for walks, like I do. They go out at least three times a day, and once a night, unless the weather is bad. I prefer this option, because we get to explore together as a bonding exercise. Honestly, my girl could probably go without her harness, and would just shadow beside me. But I don't want her killing songbirds, she's just too good at it! XD Also, her leash can extend a lot. Three lengths worth of elastic cord, so she has the option to wander under supervision.
      Another idea is to build a "cattio." Just an enclosed area outside, attached to the house so they can come and go. Sort of like a chicken run, but a little more durable, and with more climbing/perching areas. If I had the time and money, I'd love to build one myself. It would be a nice addition to my garden, and the veggies would attract those yummy insects she likes.
      In any case, it's your decision how to keep your cats. I just wish them well. ^_^

      @zistorbar Pƙed 2 lety

      @@MadamFoogie same with castration, i don't mind as much fo males, as i don't think they would notice "not being able to procreate" as strongly as a female, but i don't want to cut it away before at least 1 litter is born, i'd rather have the females neuteured, a few years later than at 8 months (don't really recal whats the point they usually force us to get it done) when the choice is mine

    • @MadamFoogie
      @MadamFoogie Pƙed 2 lety +8

      @@zistorbar I can understand that to an extent. My first cat was allowed one litter before she was spayed, so she got to have the experience of motherhood once. I think that's fair, so long as the kittens are all adopted and accounted for.
      The biggest problem here is how often queens go into heat. They can pump out five litters a year, which is terrible for cat overpopulation. In some places, congestion is so bad that they have no choice but to euthanize every animal they catch.
      And, to answer your question, females are spayed at four months here, through the Humane Society. Which is also when they're ready to be adopted, fully vaccinated, microchipped and socialized. But if you go through a breeder, it's a lot easier to get an intact juvenile with a healthy record. However, it's a flat adoption price, so you'll have to pay for the vaccines and licensing yourself. At least, that was my experience from my roommate getting a bred cat.

He was very good at communicating even without buttons and I can only imagine how much better his live would have been if he had had access to talking buttons. He was diabetic and he would bring me to his testing spot (where his glucometer and notebook with all his blood glucose readings was) and "ask" me to test his blood glucose levels anytime he didn't feel well. His levels were always too high when he did that, and he was letting me know that he needed me to fix it. He was so smart!

    Weather or other outside words might be a good next step for concepts to teach her! Like LEAF, TREE, RAIN, SNOW, maybe even HOT and COLD, though that might be difficult since it's a little bit subjective, especially between species that don't have the same internal body temperature.

    • @thetruthno1

      I have been trying to teach my three cats cold and warm. We don’t have buttons but they understand a lot of words and respond to them. But when they want to go in the garage and it’s cold outside I want them to understand that they are not gonna like it and are gonna wanna come in two seconds later.

      Looks like 'leaf ' could be useful. And 'rain' -- I think Mom uses the 'wet' button for rainy weather, but 'wet' is also used if Billi gets wet. I can see 'rain' being useful when the 'outside' she wanted is wet and therefore not pleasant to go out in.
