I love how in Patch 5, if you kept Rapheal alive he explains why Mystra is so antagonistic towards Gale. Its because Ambition is one of the most powerful tools to be used within the mortal realms.
That as time goes by, Gales power will only grow due to Gale being so egalitarian when answering prayers. Which threatens both the Heavens and Hells.
Which is why Rapheal decides to not challenge Gale further for the crown. He just wants to watch the worlds and realms burn, and collect the spoils from whomever is left. Gale becoming a god is literally the worst ending

What's so happy about it though? His relationship with Mystra is kinda toxic in my book. He did a lot of wrong things (basically choosing to bang a goddess to get power to start with), she doesn't have any empathy for him at all from all the scenes I've seen. Yes, by choosing option one he can be free of sphere's curse, free of dreams about Mystra and power, but he'll never be free of her influence since he's a wizard. That's an OK ending but I wouldn't call it happy (since he just works hard to manage to get things less broken in the end).

    • @JB-xl2jc
      @JB-xl2jc Před 9 měsíci +136

@@DarthAiris She definitely seems to have kind of groomed him. From what I can piece together, he was a very promising wizard from a young age, a total prodigy, and Mystra took notice and took him under her wing from a very young age. When he grew up a bit, he became one of her Chosen (she has a bunch, and in her various incarnations has slept with some of them including Elminster, though that was a previous incarnation of Mystra AND I believe Mystra has since wiped Elminster's memory, so even he doesn't remember it likely), and eventually they started a quasi-romantic sexual relationship. He clearly had feelings of inadequacy when comparing himself to a god though (I mean, uh, yeah, Mystra is one of the top 5 strongest entities in the setting behind Ao and a couple of other gods most likely) and tried to do the orb stuff to impress her, but of course f'ed it up royally not understanding the true nature of the orb.
Nothing he did strikes me as that bad, impetuous maybe- and then his former god doesn't communicate anything to him during the darkest period of his life, lets him stew thinking that SHE intentionally cut him off rather than it being the Karsite Weave, doesn't intervene or even caution him when he is kidnapped and mindflayer'd, and even then when she finally DOES send word, it's word that essentially amounts to "Yo, kill urself bro, if you really care about me you'd kill urself". Oof.
And even if he does everything perfect, she still hits him with the "Oh, yeah, uh... eventually, all in good time..." when he wants to resume their Chosen of Mystra-quasi relationship thing.
It's honestly pretty sad and messed up, from Mystra who was previously a largely "good" god, not in terms of alignment necessarily (she's neutral now), but in terms of "Not doing horrific shit on the daily".
Still, though, Gale's ending is a lot less bleak than some of the other companions.

But overall I'm on his side and feel that he deserves more payback for his efforts too. I recently watched a DnD Forgotten Realms lore video about the gods, or mainly Ao, and although possible: each god needs to have their own "Portfolio", things they are incharge of. I.e. Bhaal is Murder, Myrkul is Death, Bane is Tyranny and Mystra is Magic (and so on and so forth) otherwise they just cease to be (among other things). Without a Portfolio Gale wouldn't have ascended, and with a Portfolio like ambition that Mystra dislikes, well, we saw what happened there.

@@kewpified Gods rarely see other gods as "their equal", especially when they have similar or conflicting domains, hence all of the shenanigans happening in Faerun. The Domains thing is just a method of Ao to keep them vaguely in check and give them some sort of borders to stick with.
She reacts antagonistic because his ascension means that she and all of the other gods get a smaller piece of the zero sum follower/souls pie. Plus Gods don't like their power being challenged, ascending is the biggest challenge anyone could make in that regard.
Mystra reacts like a vain celebrity when the "nobody" she kept as plaything starts to get his own press and media attention without her getting mentioned at all. I do love that gale becoming a god is explicitly a bad ending, not just for him, but potentially everyone in the verse lol. In one of Raphael's endings if he's still alive, and gale becomes a god, he reveals that while things will hold out fine for now, eventually centuries down the line, gale's godhood will apparently cause a massive rift in the heavens that will "do more damage than the hells could ever hope to achieve" lol.
Not to mention that if you question him about it in the new epilogue, he points out that he cares not for what the ambition that someone strives for is. He supports ambition in all forms, so a lich with the ambition to take over the world gains just as much power as a cleric with the ambition to save it. He basically just encourages everyone to become extremists and always shoot for the moon. And it of course it's just as hypocritical as all those billionaires that give ted talks claiming that they built their fortune from nothing with just a box of scraps and some elbow grease, completely ignoring all the fortunate circumstances that even allowed them to get to where they are today.

Anyone who knows dnd lore, I’m curious about something. Can you insult gods in DnD or do you get exaggerated punishments like Greek gods, y’know being turned into a spider cause you’re a better weavers than a goddess etc.
I’m just wondering by DnD lore can a Tav hate Mystra for her relationship with Gale and say it outloud or will they be divinely punished? Someone said on one of my comments that dnd gods can’t help people because of “rules” despite being able to bone them but can they strike down for badmouthing?

I was disappointed that there is no ending where he can defeat her. There is a book called alternative perspective on the weave or something. Its in the karsus room in the tower (or somewhere around, im pretty sure i picked it up in the tower) and it says weave is not from Mystra but leftover from space faring giants. I thought probably this is the Karsite weave that Mystra is talking about, but I was so confused by the game being unclear on this, making reading this book a "check point" in the quest and then not even doing anything with the info... I really expected him to consume her with the Karsite weave as the book says this is an edible substenance (which would align with the orb of gale that feeds on the weave). But I guess they did not want to have that kind of ending. I dunno just made me a tad bit disappointed.

Seems like they respected the background lore in that.
Several thousand years ago, A wizard named Karsus developed a lvl 12 spell. The only 12th level spell ever, Karsus’ avatar, which allowed him to loan the powers of a god temporarily.
He cast it, and chose the one god he should not have chosen: Mystral, god of magic.
As karsus took mystral’s power, he unbalanced the entire weave. magic stopped working everywhere, and causing apocalyptic devastation across the realms. Karsus then died, burnt out from the power. And mystral died and was reborn as Mystra.
Gale taking her power here would result in the same thing happening again.

The forgotten realms is full of gods who were once mortal but the dividing line is that the ones that pursued godhood out of a lust for power or to quell an inferiority complex turn out to be evil gods who become walking calamities. Cyric and the dead three are perfect examples of this. Mystra is perfectly reasonable in being suspicious of gale. His successor literally tried to kill her to supplant her place as the goddess of magic and it’s implied that gale thinks of doing the same. This never turns out well, as the story implies that Karsite weave is unstable and is the reason Karsus failed in the first place. Gale is not a true god, even now, and that’s why he fails to supplant Mystra if he tries

She is literally the Goddess of magic a Greater God mind you. Gale is what? A lesser God at best? As you know there is rank in Divinity. So yes he very much would be "Less" of a God compared to her.
The crown is powerful sure but it is not ANYwhere near the power to threaten a actual Greater God. The thing that could and that thing which gave Karsus even for a moment the power of a true greater god was his 12th level spell which was taken care of ages ago to never be used again against the Gods. If the crown had any such level of threat it would have long been demolished like the spell.
You also say she died a couple of times ye I mean sure its true but what exactly is the context behind those deaths?
Karsus. The strongest wizard in history using the strongest form of magic to ever exist to steal Mystryl´s powers. She killed herself to stop it. Not exactly Mystra but It does count.
Helm. Dying at the times of Trouble when all Gods were stripped of most of their powers and forced to walk the path of mortals in Avatar form. She refused because she wanted to fulfill her duties as the Goddess of magic yet Helm killed her before she could attempt to regain her powers. She died like several other highly notable gods like Bhaal or Bane or Tiamat and more.
And ye she was Ex-Mortal but how exactly did she become a goddess? Well she was a peasant girl with basic magic skills who after the whole Karsus failing bit became the new goddess of magic gaining all of Mystryl´s powers and restoring the weave. She received the powers of a being that was already a extremely powerful Goddess she didnt create them or get them through the items of another mortal guy.
