Broke my scaphoid 8 months ago. They did not see the break at first and it wasn't seen and operated on until 4 months later. I'm 65 and have osteoporosis. They did a bone graft and put in a screw. I was healed at 5 weeks. I was amazed and felt VERY lucky.
Bless you, my 86 year old Mum broke hers and the surgeon is thrilled how well it has healed.
Clearly her pain will last a while longer. For her age she has an incredible capacity to heal - so hopefully it won't be too long before she is pain free.
How is she now, I also broke the same bone on my left hand....so share the experience
I waited too long to watch this video, or go to the hospital, or keep up with physio therapy. Good to know!
I broke this in 2012 at basketball practice and thought it was sprained. Played with it for 5 games before I decided to go to the doctor. By the time I got it checked out, half of my bone died and they had to use bone graft to replace it. I now have a permanent titanium screw in my wrist. I’m back to normal life but my wrist will never be the same, I just learned to live with it. I have 30% the range of motion that I used to, plus I have arthritis at 30 years old. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone
how long did it take you to go get it checked out after the 5 games?
@@maliksta2gangsta between when I broke it to when I got it checked was probably about 2 months give or take a couple weeks. Probably 4-5 days after the 5th game is when I got it checked out. It took a small few days break for me to realize it actually was getting worse not better. It was swelling like a softball too
That’s horrible I broke mine 4 weeks ago and got the cast off but have to wear a brace when I do stuff I guess I’m lucky with the progress mine has made
@@cjwise7741 worries me because I didn’t know my scaphoid was fractured till about 8 weeks later as well, now the damage is done and I’m doing surgery on Monday, displaced non union + bone graft, I hope it heals nicely :(
@@jessehachem2779 just be sure to actually work on range of motion and do the exercises they give you. It’s very important to long term range of motion. I believe a lot of your total healing also depends on where the break is. Mine was a clean break right in the center of the bone. Sorry that this happened. Best of luck with your recovery!
I searched this up because I knew the slowest healing bone in the body was in the wrist, but couldn't remember which one. I got super worried since I currently have a splint for another wrist bone (the trapezium) which I broke about 2 weeks ago. I was so glad to hear that it wasn't the slowest healing bone.😅
Michelle, you have explained fabulously.
My question is that what if I feel a pain on the opposite side i.e exactly in the line of little finger side ?
Different video lol
This helps to understand whats really going on. I like it
My wrist had multiple fracture due to accident. Applied Pop for 1 mnth and went for physiotherapy as advised by doctor. It healed properly after 2 mnth & i started regular activity without getting any pain.
How your so lucky I had my operation on mine 2 years ago and im still in pain with it everyday specially when lifting heavy items
Did my scaphoid when I was 20.. had scans and wasn't picked up. Played netball and hurt it again. Had a screw put in. 10yrs later my wrist started hurting. Had scans and screw Had come away so needed new screw and bone graft again.. now I'm 43 and just had scans done again and my bone has necrosis. Now need my wrist fused but dr says to leave it as long as possible. I'm stuffed
I fell on a bike and reached out my hand to soften the fall. It was 2,5 months ago. My wrist hurt a lot but was not swallen and I could move my fingers. I could not lift anything though. Even an empty cup was too much, my hand just dropped with it. I went to the doctor a month after this, they did an xray and it showed nothing. They gave me some exercises for the wrist which I have done but some were too painful or too hard. Now nobody can say exactly whats wrong. One therapist said that any bone should have been healed by now and it must be a phantom pain. But looking at this video the points you show and the movements are exactly what cause the pain. I will try to get an MRI picture. I do not want this to lead to chronic problems and pains for the rest of my life. My other arm has also started to feel sore because I am using it for doing most of the things every day. Thank you for the video.
Make sure you see a hand doctor! They know what to look for. They may order a CT or MRI to check for a scaphoid fracture or ligament injury. There are a few injuries that cause persistent pain on the thumb side of your wrist. Best of luck! I hope they find out what’s wrong!💕
@@VirtualHandCare I went to see an orthopaedist, he looked at the xray that was taken at first and said that it shows a fracture and also broken ligaments. So now I am going to CT and have an appointment to a hand surgean. I am furious right now that doctors did not see the fracture right away. It was so clear in the picture when I looked at it with the orthopeadist. Thank you so much for support :)
Same event happend here.
@@VirtualHandCare I have a distal scpahiod fracture I am In 4 weeks of healing in a cast
any advice or anything I can do to make my fracture heal faster 🙏🏽
Hi how is your hand doing , I had a similar injury seems pain is worsening after the first week.
I had a wrist fracture. I'm not sure the exact wrist bone because my doctor did not explained. My wrist seemed to be doing fine until I started taking therapy. I was given exercises to do and a heat pad to my wrist. Since then my wrist has being hurting. I took eight weeks of therapy. I was not in pain before therapy. Now Im in pain in my wrist.
Any suggestions?
I’ve broken both wrists in a motorcycle accident. My left wrist is the scaphoid and I’m a bit fed up after finding out this news. Had this cast on nearly 4 weeks now so it looks like I’ve got to be pretty patient 😞
Patience is definitely needed when it comes to healing that bone, plus it depends on which part of the bone was fractured. Hang in there!
@@VirtualHandCare thanks for your kind words.
Hey are you able to ride bike again?@@bottletree33
I have displaced scaphoid fracture from 5days before.i am wearing cast for 21 days.15th march I will go for followup.
@@zahidmehmood6213 I find out tomorrow if the waist scaphoid fracture is connected properly. If not it may require a bone graft.
Great information! We’ll done!
broke both of my scaphoids 5 weeks ago, right one distal, left one down the waist. my right one feels great already, and left one still hurts and is swollen, although it is getting better. it's just so painfully slow.
Oh no! I don't know if I've ever known anyone to break both at the same time! Unfortunately that left one will likely take longer due to the blood supply. Thankfully it wasn't the proximal pole. 🙏
@@VirtualHandCare haha yeah I'm a phenomenon for every medical professional I meet, it's particularly interesting to see how a distal fracture can heal compared to a waist fracture on one person. I know it's a long way to go but keeping a positive attitude. I'm looking forward to using your "exercises after wrist fracture" :)
@@KarlaTheProblemChild have you healed?
@@KarlaTheProblemChild how are both of them now? can you lift heavy?
I slid on wet tile floor. Landed face down on both hands. Thank God only broke left one. I was in a long silicone cast for 7 weeks after manipulation (no surgery). It was very tight and hurting constantly. It went over my hand to almost the first joint on fingers. Fingers were very swollen and black and blue. After removal 3 weeks ago, my hand and fingers are constantly swollen. I can't straighten my hand and have very little ability to use my fingers. They sent me to occupational therapy asap which I'm doing though excruciatingly painful. I'm thinking there is something else going on. Only x-rays were done. No scans. Any suggestions or similar experiences, please comment. I'm desperate. I'm completely inept with out the use of my hand. Thank you
Yeah, my daughter fell on my hand. I was diagnosed with after x-ray confirmed avulsion fracture of trapezium. Again like other comments I wasn't told which bone, in fact one nurse didn't look at image and told me it's a sprain. The Dr read that nurses note and told me it's a sprain. I showed them their own discharge summary letter which stated the facts. Dr scrambled and made stuff up on the spot. I gave up hope, now can't trust NHS anymore. They are professional institutional gaslighters.
I broke my scaphoid 10 days back , went to diagnosis later as I was under assumptions it was just a sprain. Looking at this video i have question i prefferred bottole holding position cast over surgery screw fuxing which doctor suggested, my diagnosis is mild displaced waist scaphoid fracture. How long would it take to heal
I just broke it! Got my mri yesterday to determine surgery,
I went to urgent care and they told me that it wasn’t fractured and then I went to ortho and they told me I had four fractures and one break
Glad you went to an ortho! These are often missed on X-rays. Best of luck on your recovery!
Love this video, do you have any wrist brace recommendations for scapholunate ligament partial tear?
Broke my scaphoid (waist fracture non-displaced non-union) 114 days ago and it's still fucked.
Got my surgery coming up.

Do you have to do the kind where they have to take a bone from your knee?
broke this and dealing w it a year later, get the surgery trust
Do you really need it man I’ve had this problem for almost a year and it’s pissing me off I can’t even do a push up well I can but it’s hurts bad

Broken wrist here lol well healed now did it on thanksgiving. Distal radius fracture and ulna, cast for 8 weeks no surgery. But yeah actually my weakest point is my thumb in that area it’s still sore and weak
Very good information
Sweet this is what I have no wonder it hasn’t healed after 3 weeks 😅
I have a distal radius fracture with closed ulna and a broken scapoid bone i have a bolt in the scapoid a metal plate and another bolt
I broke this and don’t wish it on anyone. 4 years now and still hasn’t healed
How has it not healed?
@@TheBluePilledPebric Good question. It just hasnt. I dont understand either.
You need to see a hand surgeon asap.
I think your bone healed but not properly. Also several videos talk about how some part of the bone might die, and not be able to heal, unless they take a piece of bone from your hip, and place it in there.
@@meorme6603 that exact thing happened to me bone melted away n hip bone got put in n tied together with a screw
lesssgooo broke one last month, it's better now but yeah no shit i can't gym yet
Hello doctor, my son broke his radius bone in an accident. I would like to ask you if I send a photo. Can you comment? I am very sad. Does he need surgery? Several doctors come to different conclusions. We are grateful, thank you...
I am having this fracture now. In a cast for next 6 weeks
Did you heal?
@@TheBluePilledPebric Yes I did. My plaster was removed on Jan 30th. I am able to lift weight and all but my wrist is weak and I do have some pain in the wrist (may be due to the long term plaster effect). Thanks for asking
Sir after how much time your cast was removed, am also got that fracture 1 month ago and 3 weeks are gone after plaster
@@Asiancharm22 I have kept it for 8 weeks.. and it really helped. My hand is fully healed now
@@hemanthbtwas it in distal bhai?
Could this be the reason why I still feel numbness in the fingers while my broken fingers healed altogether.
Numbness is due to nerve compression. See a hand doctor for this!
I broke my wrist because of dancing, and I'm holding it. I cannot tell my parents about nor my siblings. But I wanna know what I should do? It's the bone near the thumb.
Hello, I have also watched prof. Tim Davis about non displaced waist fracture of the wrist. He said that 4 weeks could be enough to practically get the cast away, if healing shows on the CT scan after 4 weeks of injury. I know that many doctors are rather for longer treatment like 6-8 weeks, but is it possible such short time to heal scaphoid bone?
So after how much time your cast was removed after 4 weeks or 6
@@Asiancharm22 After 8 weeks. Unfortunately my doctor was conservative and in my country CT scan or MRI are used minimally to save money. But after 8 weeks it was ok, and after 10 I had full mobility.
Does it usually take years to heal? Because I fractured mine in about 2012 and it still hasn't fully healed yet
How?
I fractured mine in 2008ish or 2009ish. I’m 28 and now started feeling the effects of not properly training it over the yrs. I would say it could take yrs but maybe just give it time tbh
Hi Doc I Play a lot of badminton recently I have pain in the pinky side of my hand at the wrist, the pain is mild initially but I keep playing for two days without addressing it thinking it might go away but the pain increases and now for 4 days I haven't play anymore I went to a local physiotherapy she treated me with some machine the pain decrease a little bit. Hi I had a Scaphid fracture near the waist maybe a little distal. Sports accident - also broke the radial head at the same time. It's been a little over 2 months and having trouble with a lot of pain in the snuffbox area. I have to do a physical job in health care. My therapist thinks I need more time but my ortho doc - not a hand guy - thinks I should be good to go in three weeks and has me now doing "work hardening" should I get another opinion or just gut it up and go back to work.
Go see a hand surgeon asap. You will regret it latter in life with arthritis

Hello, does a small tear in a scapholunate ligament heal on its own ? What are the non surgical options ?
This needs to be addressed by your hand surgeon. If not properly cared for now it can lead to painful wrist problems down the road.

Good morning Michele,
I had a distal scaphoid non-displaced fracture. I’m seven weeks in and just came out of a cast and I am back in a wrist brace.
What are your favorite wrist braces to buy? I think mine is a little uncomfortable. I’m waiting on a CT to see how hard we can push the rest and when to start PT
hi doc i fell on a bike and i got a Scaphid facture in 2020. It was 2and half year ago. My wrist hurt a lot but was not swallen and I could move my fingers.. I could not lift anything though its pain in the wrist. I went to the doctor a month after this, they did an xray and it showed nothing. They gave me some exercises for the wrist which I have done but some were too painful or too hard then one doctor said me for CT scan that time know it was schoid facture then i operated in july 2021 then doctor one screw in my wrist now it still paining and in recent CT scan it still now properly heal so i can do so it properly heal and i am unable to my hand to upside please suggest me what i can do so it heal properly and after opreation swelling around the wrist so how to over come that pls let me know that i can do?

That’s a good idea for a video! Thank you for the idea. A lot of it has to due with the loss of bone density as we age.

Do not like... Its not anyhitng healing slower or faster. Just dont be 15 and wrists heal fast. Aight? Nettles, chili and mosquitos will make areas like this np fast
