The VERY Weird Wonder Woman TV Show You Never Saw

  • It should be no surprise that the DCEU wasn't the first attempt at creating an interconnected universe of characters from DC Comics. Though one attempt at creating a Wonder Woman TV show was destined to fail. Even though shows like Smallville found success on television, a show surrounding Wonder Woman couldn't find the same footing. So why exactly did they fire this version of Wonder Woman, and what could it have led to within DC Comic properties?

I think it boils down to something very basic. People who don't like superheroes make bad superhero shows. If you think the idea of someone dressing up in a crazy costume and fighting bad guys under an alias is silly, then you shouldn't try to tell a story about a character who does that.

I think part of the problem with the pilot (on top of David E. Kelley just being absolutely the wrong person to put in charge) was that they had two civilian IDs for Diana, and hadn't decided which one to use before they started filming, so they used both. That's something that absolutely should have been fixed, and that even Kelley should have been able to figure out well in advance of recording.

I agree. I think it could be coherent show if they just focus on Wonder Woman and Diana Prince, the regular girl neighbor (but honestly this is boring), or Wonder Woman and Diana the CEO of multi million enterprise that knowingly exploit WW for more profit with merchandises. I think the second take could be a very good show that at least will develop cult following. It's a fresh take on good guy protagonist especially in movie or TV media. But they can't see it and Marvel get it, run the idea with Tony Stark, and the rest is history.

Kelley showed the biggest issue with Hollywood nowadays: picking up an existing IP without understanding it, and thinking they can “correct” down the line instead of getting it right from the get go.
And it isn’t about ‘lack of resources’. Plenty of directors and show-runners have done a ton with very little. The issue is the arrogance of taking a successful, existing IP and thinking that the audience wants to see you change it to your sensibilities, all because you couldn’t sell the idea you actually wanted to produce on its own.

Honestly, I agree that this show was cancelled for the better. Even though Im a big fan of Wonder Woman, I still think the character deserves better and should allow her to dive more into fantastical adventures that embrace her history and character as a beacon of truth and compassion, while still allowing her to dive into nuanced and compelling stories surrounding her as a character, and interesting compelling themes. Not to mention a lot of people tend to forget how expansive Wonder Woman's mythos are the sheer scope of what you can do with the character and her vast assortment of characters and villains. Gal Gadot Wonder Woman was a solid interpretation of the character, however, the DCEU as a whole was a huge mess and Wonder Woman was rather surface-level of who Diana is while also losing sight of her character in WW1984, which was a very confusing disaster.
I hope in future adaptions of the character like her eventual rebooted interpretation in James Gunn's DCU with the announced Paradise Lost show, her upcoming Monolith videogame, and the confirmed Wonder Woman animated series that is in the works, we can go back to what makes her one of the most timeless and important heroes in fiction

@@Watch-0w1 I would say you probably have definitely missed the mark, I can understand why as a lot of Wonder Woman media has suffered from using Wonder Woman as a self-insert of certain writers and people's negative feelings towards feminism, which is hardly what the character is about. Wonder Woman is a nuanced character that represents the embodiment of truth, compassion and peace among all living beings and acts as both a warrior, ambassador and princess to share the wisdom and teaching of those who seek said guidance and lack self-love in themselves.
If you want to check out good Wonder Woman stories that treat her as an actual character then I highly recommend reading George Perez's Wonder Woman comics run you can read them as separate Volumes, or check Greg Rucka's Rebirth Wonder Woman comic run.

I think one of the biggest reasons Wonder Woman hasn’t gotten many adaptations is because the Characters history and origins change every few years. Not to mention the character’s personality seems to be split. There’s Diana the Warrior and Diana the Lover and that also splits the fandom. You can see this difference very well comparing Synder’s Wonder Woman to Patty Jenkins 1984 Wonder Woman.

    • @bhart3321
      @bhart3321 Před 9 měsíci +1

Which is stupid. Warrior or not she's still a person & people are multifaceted. I think writers need to get over not allowing heroes to be married & happy cuz somehow they'll just throw in the hero gig & never go back. Like do you numbskulls not understand how basic human psychology works?
These people are heroes they'll never stop being heroes. Even when they do quit it can't last cuz the calling of responsibility is too strong. Then you add on that how they suppose to give others hope if they have none of their own.
Bottomline is comics have so much leeway in the way they can illustrate sociopolitical issues as well as interpersonal relationships but they just don't or seemingly can't in a well written nuanced way anymore. Our political climate has just made nuance impossible probably cuz the people writing these things aren't as talented as they think they are or are so ignorant of the actual nuances of social & interpersonal issues that they literally don't understand they exist, probably both. Both possibilities don't speak well to them as well read, well informed people most of them claim to be. It also could be that despite their protests to the contrary they don't actually care about these issues & see them as just fodder to get ahead by chasing clout.

I thought the WW pilot was the perfect example of a 'Protagonist centered morality'. To sum up it means "The main character is good because we say they are and as such all actions they take are good no matter what, don't examine further."
Both the main character and side characters might do morally questionable things but we spend the most time with our protagonist, so we can better see and understand where their actions are coming from and give them the most empathy and benefit of the doubt. Other characters don't get that time and empathy so we can just write off their actions being bad, end of discussion.
I personally see it as really frustrating writing because the audience is encouraged to NOT explore deeper.

Oh, I saw it. Pictures leaked of her in the costume when they shut down a road to shoot (presumably the pilot). The backlash on how bad the costume looked became huge in the comic book community and presumably killed the show.
Also, Smallville had just finished, so it missed its opportunity by like a decade or so to be able to tie in, get some momentum and springboard off of that based on fan reaction. Look at the Arrow and all the spin-offs from that. First, Flash then Supergirl. Superman and Lois got made because the character got started on Supergirl and fans liked it. That is what allowed the studio to justify making a pilot with the actor, suit, ect all ready received by an audience well.
So, bottom line, when you see what happens behind the scenes. It is absolutely no surprise.
On top of that, it is VERY common for pilots to never be picked up by a network.
