"Facing away from the wall" is a hilarious and underrated line. Obviously it's an homage to A Chorus Line and "facing away from the mirror", but the connotations are hilarious. Did they learn the combination facing the back wall instead of the audience for no reason? The fact that she's TELLING them to face away from the wall as though anyone would dance facing the back wall. I love it.
I also hadn't noticed it, and I must thank you for pointing it out because I am enjoying the comfy in this song even more now. Lol. This is one of my favourite numbers from both seasons.
It's a sound of music reference. She's telling Leisl's story. Hey dad didn't let her "Stay and taste [her] first champagne" And Baron von Trapp had a whistle.
RIGHT!!! I knew that the 'stick' is a definite reference to Madam Giry - and the layers you just mentioned; it's really something I never knew I needed.
I LOVED the very end when they sing “I need to eat tonight”. The last time they sing the word “tonight” the final chord is the same as the end of the Quintet in WEST SIDE STORY.
"Bleak? 'How bleak was my puberty?' 'Bleak Buffalo!' Hear how the two words cling to each other! Locked together like a man and woman in each other's arms. Listen to the words sing!" "How bleak was my puberty!"
My moms grew up in a religious military cult together. And then one day they go off in a joy ride together and they fell off the skiff together into a weird jungle-type thingy. Big Mom found a great big sword in the middle of this jungle, and it kind of drove her and Little Mom apart for a while. They ended up on opposite sides of the military cult’s war against some hereditary monarchs or other. Then they fought some more and then they made up and they killed the cult’s leader together after turning off a superweapon via kissing. My dads…well they met each other at a theme park. One of them trying to get away from some bad family problems and the other was just vibing. Turns out the actress who built the park was a wacky person. One of those Necromancers, you know. Could body hop between park guests and staff, you know. So they had to put aside their differences to defeat her scheme and fortunately, they had the help of Dad’s magical dog to do so. Quite a big escapade, if you ask me. So one of my moms was a powerful young witch from a mighty old family, and my other mom was a neurodivergent kid from the boondocks and they met in high school and they learned magic together and there were adventures with mom’s mentor and little brother, but they didn’t get together until the asshole who was in charge of the nation died horribly and they could be in love with each other without him punishing them or hurting the ones they loved.

Thanks for mentioning that, I hadn't noticed it. Great line :-)

Ann harada had the best blink-and-you-miss-it line in each season. This one, plus "how are you finding your rooms? I use a string"
At 2:04 I’m barely realizing her monologue is a direct reference from The Sound of Music! She’s Liesel 🤣🤣🤣
“The type with a whistle”. Gets me every time.
Like ma'am, which other type are there? lol
It's a sound of music reference. She's telling Leisl's story.
Hey dad didn't let her "Stay and taste [her] first champagne"
And Baron von Trapp had a whistle.
Yeah when I heard her reference the champagne I said “hi Leisl,”.
Last night my dinner was a candle 🕯️
That line makes me cackle way more than it should. I know it's supposed to rhyme with the next line's "handle" but 😂
(Last night my dinner was a candle)
That's a reference to tallow candles, which poor people were occasionally forced to eat.

ann harada's character is amazing. madame giry with cabaret's cultural context and a chorus line's premise wow. something i never knew i needed

It's also nice to hear her doing a ridiculous accent that doesn't also makeher character play into unfortunate racial stereotypes.
The also references Debbie Allen in Fame and her "you want Fame?" speech@@bee_tenacity
I love how the second girl (in yellow) is basically Liesl from The Sound of Music😂
The underscoring has a little bit of Edelweiß as well!
@@kevinplee Once upon a time Cicely Strong played Liesl.

Are the other women a musical references too? I instantly recognised Liesl but wasn’t sure if the others where too ahah
@@DRfiguremaina yeah, l wondered the same thing. I haven't seen any comments about them, so probably not?

2:14 HOLY CRAP! 🤯
I just noticed the melody of Edelweiss in the underscoring of the "y'know the kind wth a whistle" monologue! I see you Cinco Paul!
This is why I sometimes love CZcams comment sections, you get little nuggets like this, which I would never have noticed on my own. Thanks!
The "Hey!" Melissa gives had me in stitches! 😂
How did I just now realize that the girl talking about her father and champagne is a reference to Liesl from The Sound of Music. Genius.
Having done A Chorus Line...and played Bobby from Buffalo, this killed me!
Me too! I couldn't stop laughing. I was Al DeLuca in a high school production so I knew the song and dance well.
"... and also clear my husband of murrr-derrr!"
“…dancer as good as Elsie was. Before she died.” Not
after she died.
Well, no one compares to her rendition of _Thriller._
@@cam4636 I heard it was supposed to be "The Music and the Mirror."
Actually that's Melissa's solo during the song.
