So I tried my hand at salt dough ornaments and made all the mistakes on film so that you know what NOT TO DO when you are making them. But in the end I landed on my feet so it's all good. Watch, learn with me, laugh and enjoy. Merry Christmas!

Anne...Here is a funny "kitchen story" for you and Cousin Mel to laugh about. Shortly after a couple living 10 miles down road moved in our rural area, my husband stopped to see how they were doing settling in to rural life. When they confided they had a family emergency and were desperately trying to get to their adult kids' who lived several states away...my husband "volunteered" ME to take care of their home and two house cats. I love all animals, but was uncomfortable going into their otherwise empty house...especially since there were recent rural home burglaries in our areas. So, to calm my nerves, I pretended to be "Julia Childs" as I prepared the gourmet cat food for their cats and did weekly vaccuum and general cleaning up after these mischievous cats. I would talk to them as I went about their care and play time, laughing as I used my "Julia Childs, stiff-upper lip British accent " while preparing food, playfully praising or gently scolding them for accidents. Upon the neighbors' return, they invited us up for dinner. In conversing, I learned she was a trauma therapy counselor. After a few more minutes of polite conversation, they looked at each other, then burst out in outrageous laughter, with my hubby joining in?! My hubby iinformed me, they had left their home security video on ...and checked on their home remotely....as it dawned on me what was on those videos....the couple informed me, between side-holding laughter...that my "Julia Child's show" had become the bright spot in their entire family's nightly dinners! My face must have turned purple! I shyly asked, "Aah....do you recommend therapy?" She burst out laughing, said I should make a tape for USE in laughter therapy! After that, we became good friends and had many years of great memories!

Thank you for being real. Most content makers would have ditched the video. You bring humor and fun. And yes, in the end they turned out great. Plus, if they were perfect, they wouldn't be "primitive." Love doing a handmade Christmas. I did orange and apple slices last year, plus a yo-yo fabric garland. This year I made cinnamon applesauce ornaments and some mini journal ornaments. So much fun!
Oh wow… that IS fun! I figure that there’s no point to ditching a video because I would never have time to redo it… lol
I have a simple, no fail recipe for "decoration only" cookies. You buy a large jar of applesauce and the big spice jars found at Dollar General stores. Get 4-6 large jars of POWDERED cinnamon, all spice, cloves...whatever your favorite spices are. Dump applesauce in large bowl, start adding in powdered spices, mixing with spoon, then hands as it turns into dough. Roll dough out on parchment or wax paper to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick, then cut with cookie cutters. Use a straw to poke a hole in top of each cookie for ornaments, or two holes in center of cookies if for on a long length of ribbon or jute for a garland of cookies. Lay all fresh cut "cookies" on wire racks and let dry overnight, turning over so entire cookie dries. Cookies need air dried for 1-3 days. DO NOT PUT IN OVEN. You can "ice" these decoration only cookies with "puffy fabric paint" found at craft stores. Lots less fuss and smells wonderful! You could even use them for garland, name tags on presents, or gingerbread houses. Lots of fun to make!

Oh my goodness. I absolutely LOVE this video. The realness, clumsiness and perseverance. This is the most real thing I have ever seen. This reminds me of myself. Always have intentions of making things and then make a big big mess .

Your tree ornaments out beautiful! Homemade ones are always the best. I tuck dried orange slices in garlands as well as hanging them on my trees. The little gingerbread people turned out adorable too! Mod podge is so handy. I mix instant coffee and spices right into the mod podge and paint it on all kinds of stuff to achieve a primitive look. It works great on those shiny bells from the dollar store. I just paint a few layers on and sprinkle it with more cinnamon. They look like rusty metal once they dry for a fraction of the cost!

I love that you are so real...we all have tried projects that didn't quite work out, but you got it to work in the end and that's what's important! I don't think it was too much salt, just too much water. 💦 as you stated the recipe called for 3/4- 1 cup of water and you added 1 1/2 cups. The dough should be the consistency of play dough.
Yep - I always keep it real. No airs here. lol I doubled the recipe so it was calling for 1 1/2 cups but later when I went back and reread the recipe I realized that it was 2 parts flour to 1 part water. Apparently the salt is the preservative. These puppies will be preserved till kingdom come!

Hint...I use masking tape on edge of parchment paper so it doesnt move while rolling dough on it. Sprinkle flour lightly on rolling pin and on parchment paper. As for making orange slices...once they are thinly cut, dab with paper towels, on both sides, to get more moisture out of them, then bake at 250 degrees, flipping over to other side every half hour. Takes 2-3 hours in oven, then pull out and let air dry for rest of day. They turned out great on tree, so that is all that matters, but gave you hints from my trials...so easier fun next time😊
You know - I read that - forgot to dab and didn't feel like flipping and turned them up so the cookies would be done - hahaha. I want the kitchen to work by my rules . For all I know my poor oranges will get moldy halfway through the season. Those are wonderful important tips - thanks!

Haha that’s great. A friend walked in when I was making them and she to,d me that they’ve been making them with the kids where she teaches. She said “is this the first time you ever. Made these” when she looked down at my mess. Kids love this project.
Use a breadboard wrapped in Saran Wrap and use cinnamon instead of flour for rolling out. Chill dough a couple of day before you use.

You need to leave the oven door open slightly to let the air circulate. I just made mine for the first time this year! I can so relate to all the problems when trying a new recipe. There is a recipe from McCormick …it’s apple sauce & cinnamon mixed to make gingerbread men dough

Oh Anne, I so needed a laugh today! Thank you. You are just the funniest baker ever! I loved that you cooked the poop out of the oranges. Normally you do them low and slow! But I'm with you higher temp and get them done!!!! I loved your gingerbread salt dough. I wonder if you had used instant coffee if it would have melded into the dough better?? I have not made these in forever and actually I think I made the applesauce and cinnamon ornaments. I'm keeping this video as a favorite. I loved your determination and I think your tree looks beautiful. Before I became disabled I used to have a tree in every room of my home. but now, I'm lucky to get one in the living room. Anne, is that a Cutco Knife I see! When I was 16 I invested in the whole set, and paid by installments. I’m 72, I have the entire set still to this day. Cutco replaced, sharpened & polished the set for me about 5 years ago. Honestly, when I left them at the factory, I felt strange…. Your dough needs more flour and add the cinnamon to the dough. 😊

I went to college so I wouldn’t have to cook, and I didn’t watch this because I don’t do a tree anymore! You were so cute and I laughed a lot . I may be making garlands with the dough (hearts or shamrocks!) thx I saw you on February 18, 2022. My Christmas crèche is not put away yet. We had death and illness in our families. I made Valentine pillows after you and Mel had so many heart pillows. Do you keep things like your dough cookies or toss them? I would keep them in a tin!

Lol I have a few cooking videos done a few years ago on the channel. Check them out… you’ll see. I do like takeout. Also Tom can cook and right now we have a professional chef living with us at least for a few more weeks. I actually can cook quite well if I’m not making a video about it. The cooking gods have a great sense of humor!

I always got an orange in the toe of my stocking! A handful of walnuts and maybe hard candy. That was it! Unlike today, huh? Love your ideas. I have made salt ornaments but haven't done oranges it. It's been on my radar this year. Happy holidays!

I think ALL of your ornaments are charming!!! And I had some really good laughs watching you too. Don't feel bad, I'm right there in the boat with you. I'm going to try drying oranges again..the first and last time I tried them I had the oven temp too high..lesson learned..low and slow if you want pretty color. I've only made the cinnamon applesauce ornies, and they were super easy, but I want to try the salt dough and sprinkle them with cinnamon and coffee...was wondering if using instant coffee, maybe mix it with the mod podge??? and then brush it on?? Thanks for sharing this and not ditching it Anne...I love it.
Hmm that’s an interesting idea… would the modge podge take on the color of the instant coffee ? Hmm I kind of like my burnt oranges lol. I’m going to have to try cinnamon applesauce ornaments!
@@AnneClay I was thinking it might dissolve, maybe streaky (?) in the mod podge..but don't know for sure.. My oranges were all very dark and burnt looking.. it dawned on me, after seeing your video, that it was prob. b/c I didn't have a rack to bake them on...they were taking forever to dry out...prob b/c they were stewing in their own juices.... tired of waiting on them I hiked the oven up way high...instead of dried they were toasted as in burnt toast...I learned from watching you and am going to attempt making them one more time..was clueless way back when I made them the first time that a rack was necessary for them to dry properly. Some details matter, LOL
