    It’s interesting that Judai becomes the darkness to destroy the light of destruction because of the reversal in the tropes between light and dark. Light can be seen as escaping your problems and letting someone handle them for you or erase your mind of them while Dark can be seen as taking on your negative emotions and issues then pushing ahead the lonely road that comes with confronting yourself

      @matthewkuscienko4616 Před 26 dny +2

      I would argue it's not just that it's an anime series and people think it's silly because of that, but also because people like to refer to Yugioh as a "children's card game" thanks to the Abridged Series. I think that while the whole "children's card game" line is meant to be a joke, it still very heavily implies that the game is for kids and can't hold up as well for adults, which is ironic considering that they are often the ones that are playing the game at a higher, more competitive level. Either way, the implication of Yugioh being seen as a "children's card game" I think naturally makes people take it less seriously -- if someone believes that something is for kids, they are less likely to indulge in it because they think that it'll make them come across as more immature for having a more childish interest, which, in turn, makes them more dismissive of any value it has. In the case of GX specifically, the fact that we don't get to see the last season get dubbed after Jaden fuses with Yubel is also not helping anything, either, as arguably the most important development Jaden gets comes from season 4, as well as brings his character arc full circle

    Jaden is one of my favourite shonen characher because of his solid development.
    He starts naive and careless, but every single episode, even the Kaibaman one, develops his personality. He grows up from every single experience, just like a real person.
    He also has a Harry Potter-kinda like leadership, people choose him to be their leader but he doesn't want to be the leader, he just wants to be normal and enjoy his favourite game.
    In fact, he starts relaxing when he meets Johan, who is a born leader and shares with him the weight of saving the world.
    And when Jaden loses the only person he can rely on, his whole world cracks into pieces. Like it would happen to a real person.
    Let's take Atem in comparison. The Orichalcos arc is very intense and interesting, yes... But out of nowhere people start saying the Pharaon is evil, is dark, the source of everything bad in the world. Well, maybe they could be right in the manga, where the Pharaon was pretty sadistic at the beginning, but on the anime version he has always had a superhero attitude.
    Raphael pops out of nowhere, keeps blabbing how bad Atem is, that he will play the Seal because he is evil, that he sacrifices his monsters... It's ODD, especially because we are not on Digimon where you have a bond with your partner, who is a living being, it's a card game that requires you a tribute to summon your ace monster.
    And what happens after Orichalcos arc? Will Atem think back in guilt about how he lost Yugi, during the next Arc? Will someone scold him for being too proud? No.
    Atem will hard reset to the conditions of the pre Orichalcos arc, because it's filler. He did learn NOTHING from his whole experience. In the final duel he needs to learn AGAIN to loose, which was the plot point of Orichalcos arc, so WTF?
    Well, Jaden learns. He is taunted by Super Polymerization and his little Haou arc, he is so distressed to influence his friends and put them apart.
    Just have a look at the third opening: in the first version he is sad.
    On the second version he starts smiling because there is Johan.
    On the third version he is sad but also determined, Johan is taken off from the opening, and all the previous memories of Jaden and his friends are now Jaden/Johan memories.
    Why? Because Johan now is his most important person, and having to bear again all the weight of the world in his own shoulders (because his other friends can't do any without him), makes him feel lonely and desperate again.

    Jaden/Judai Yuki is one of my all time favorite Yu-Gi-Oh Protagonists (next would probably be Yusei). I like the journey he goes on and I can relate a lot of my experiences growing up with his. I find him and Yusei to be two of the most relatable Yu-Gi-Oh Main characters for me. I love Yugi too...but I find Jaden to be more down to earth, relatable and I can see myself in his character a lot.
    I too grew up with a happy go lucky attitude but lost my childhood early due to dark experiences...(not going into detail) and right up to adulthood, I became a depressed mess...I'm still a depressed mess (have been diagnosed with PTSD, Depression, on the aUTISM spectrum) and I have my days where I don't want to talk to anyone...But I've slowly been learning how to move forward too like Jaden did in season four and accept the darkness and bad things along with the light and good things. He sort of reminds me a bit of Sora from Kingdom Hearts but then his character journey ends up a bit more like RIku's character journey as he too learns to accept the darkness and use it for good as well.
    Anyway, enough of my rambling. Point is, Judai/Jaden is a character that means a lot to me. Johan is definitely a favorite of mine too up there with Joey and Seto.

    GX is the anime that got me into YGO in the first place and yep, I do have to agree, Judai is the most developed main character out of all the series.
    Though I also like Yusei, the only gripe I have with him is that he's too flawless. Makes him less realistic compared to Judai.
    Atem is just all "I'm ancient and I'm awesome" and not much else
    Yuma is alright ig. I used to dislike Zexal back wjen it first came out but now it fits right in the middle of the pack. It's pretty cool.
    Yuya = S M I L E C U L T L E A D E R... and that's his entire character
    Honestly can't say much about Yusaku himself due to me not remembering but he was interesting. Shame the anime messed up everything and everyone else though...
    Yuga from Sevens is a younger Yusei imo. Obv doesn't have his history but he is quite a competent tinkerer for his age. A big strength of Sevens is that it develops most if not all other characters properly whereas most of the others downgrade the rival over time (with Kaito and Reiji being the exceptions) and make the females irrelevant as the series goes on.
    Ye, so that's my reason for not only loving GX but also every other series except for Arc-V and Vrains. I have yet to watch Go Rush so I didn't mention it

    This is a good video. However, I feel that it misunderstands Jaden as a character. Or at least, what would seem more appropriate for him.
    When I think of Jaden Yuki, I see the card game equivalent of Goku from the Dragon Ball franchise. Someone who appears to be foolish and without a care in the world, but actually has a surprising amount of wisdom and is willing to put himself in danger for the sake of others.
    From my perspective, Jaden was never in need of character development. Just like the iconic Saiyan warrior of Earth, I see him as someone who already had an ideal personality and inspired the personal growth of those around them. In fact, this would’ve allowed the show to focus a bit more on the other characters rather than making it mostly about Jaden.
    Because of that, I felt that the plot of Season 3 (and probably Season 4 since I haven’t watched the entire thing) was very out of place. Jaden was accused of being a selfish person who only dueled for fun, he blamed himself for things that weren’t (or at least not entirely) his fault, and became obsessive to the point of making some VERY bad decisions. Things that go against Jaden’s character from the earlier seasons.
    Honestly, I think it would’ve been a better backstory if Jaden’s character development occurred before the start of the series. He faced darkness and depression at a very young age until he experienced something that gave him the strength to overcome it. And now, he faces the world with a smile while giving that same gift to others.
    Those who wear a smile aren’t always the fools they appear to be. In fact, they’re likely to be aware of how dark the world can be, but act the way they do because they know that you don’t gain anything by wallowing in your own misery. Think of “King” by Lauren Aquilina.

    • @rinrainaozora4254
      @rinrainaozora4254 Před 14 dny +2

      I believe what the writers wanted was a story showing the loss of naivety as a person grows older (or the journey from a kid to an adult). We witnessed his loss of innocence. He started out happy-go-lucky until he encounters more and more people who duel for more than just having fun. By Season 3’s second half, Jaden lost the ability to enjoy dueling and that carried over to Season 4. That was until his love for dueling got rekindled, and he realized he can enjoy dueling while also dueling for the greater good. Him having the power of the Gentle Darkness was hinted in Season 1 and then basically confirmed in Season 2, so it wasn’t something out of nowhere. Season 3 actually gave more weight to the name of the power compared to previous seasons. This meant this Jaden’s role in the dueling world was already fixed to be something more grand than your typical duelist.
      You also gotta remember that Season 3 introduced characters that made Jaden question his own personal reasons for dueling. The key reason why Jaden suddenly started to doubt himself is because of Johan (Jesse). Johan was initially presented to be similar to Jaden in a lot of ways and he was able to bond quickly with him on a deeper level compared to his other friends because Johan actually fully understood Jaden. After hearing Johan’s reason (which was to save duel spirits), Jaden showed admiration toward him. But when asked about the reason why he duels by Johan, Jaden couldn’t give an answer because suddenly, his own reason feels so shallow by comparison.
      Jaden feels worse after hearing Viper’s motivation for dueling, which was to revive his dead son. If you compare those two’s motivations to Jaden’s own reason, it’s no wonder he started doubting himself. (He was also affected by the motivation of one the Academy’s teachers, which is the first moment where he verbally expresses his own doubts).
      Their motivations were fueled by personal experiences, and he could feel their conviction. The conviction of people can deeply affect others. In the previous seasons, the other characters were affected by Jaden’s battling spirit. Season 3 gave us characters who were so dedicated to their own reasons that Jaden’s battling spirit had no effect on them, but instead had an effect on him.

    • @kaizerhall3138
      @kaizerhall3138 Před 13 dny +1

      @rinrainaozora4254 This is a very good analysis. Although I think that GX was (originally) meant to be a contrast to DM, complete with a lighter, episodic theme and a protagonist who averts the idea of the Chosen One archetype, I like how you were able to come up with all of this, explaining why Jaden went through all these self-doubts.
      However, I feel that the lesson of “Dueling for Something Greater Than Fun” was unnecessary for a character like Jaden Yuki. He’s been in several duels where the safety/freedom of his friends, and sometimes the world, were at stake. Although he kept an upbeat attitude during those duels, I find it hard to believe that he didn’t take any of it seriously. The way I see it, Jaden is the kind of protagonist who puts on this happy face not because he’s naive, but because he knows that given in to pressure won’t solve anything. Someone who tends to be misunderstood and whose personality is something to admire rather than to look down upon. But like you, that’s just how I see it when I about this particular MC.

    Gx was too Judai-centered, many good side characters were ruined and wasted so that Judai can shine, not just Kaiser. This is normal in Yugioh animes, but in GX it was too much. Kaiser for example was ruined the most, in S3 he was nerfed and disrespected at the end so that Yubel can survive and fight Judai, and then in S4 he was completely ruined and abondoned. Most of Ygo rivals are done dirty by the end tho. S4 of gx was especially bad, gx could have been so much better if it wasn't for Judai's plot armor, there was many forced writing. Still solid overall, normal people who watch original Japanese know how good it is to just listen to the voices and soundtracks..

    I'm not usually a fan of overcoming trauma and/or ptsd being the end of someones character arc, it always feels a bit contrived, steven universe future and the legend of korra has the same issue, where the main protagonist has to overcome their ptsd/trauma to become whole again.
