I understand that this event is supposed to be for the kids... but when I was a kid I liked watching hockey...Did that change?
Yes, and it was never "for the kids" it's only started being that in the last decade.
That has to be the most embarrassing breakaway competition ever, no skills were involved and the judging had no meaning. And they wonder why the league isn't growing, compare this skill competition to the NBA and you get an idea why. At least in the NBA the put on an act but actually deliver when it comes to skills.
That was absolutely embarrassing.
So while I think this was far from perfect (and a little cringe at points to be honest) I think this is actually a great step forward for the league. We're actually starting to see the players becoming more and more comfortable displaying some personaility and that's going to pay dividens for the sport and league down the road as younger players not yet in the league watch this and take their cues to improve on it.
@@kiroolioneaver8532 it's the corporate boardroom version of personality. As a Boston fan, watching Pasta get to participate in one thing, and have it be an absolutely moronic Happy Gilmore skit was embarrassing and downright almost insulting.
The funniest part is it looked like there werent many kids in the stands.

What happened to the old all star games… the getting to draft players picking Phil Kessel last having players be creative and unique not trying to put on an over complicated show, having some lame judges for a skills competition that isn’t even skill based, no puck handling no breakaway moves no crazy saves and worst of all, some teams don’t even have a player there. Where’s Zegras where’s Kane stamer Tavares, where are the all stars?? I’m from ottawa I would love to see more than my captain representing my team in the biggest event of the year, it’s terrible man im so dissapointed

Not the biggest event of the yea. More like biggest joke of the year. The real skills contest died in the 90s. Now it is just scripted jackassery. Interviews are a joke skill comp is a joke players are forced to be there not looking like they are really enjoying it. Sarah nurse knew it wasnt that bug of a deal just made a move and knew the goalie wasnt going to try.
The whole things is a waste of time. It used to be skills comp was the only good thing about all star weekend. They need to either go back to the real skill comp or stip doing allstar weekend permanently

I think Zegras did it perfectly last year; a funny joke/bit that enhanced an unreal shot. Even Kaprizov's Ovechkin tribute was a decent penalty shot. The most impressive thing this time around was Tkachuk bouncing a puck on his stick a bit and that wasn't even the shot...
Too bad this event has been butchered. Would have loved to see some true skills and the immense talent of current NHL players and goaltenders displayed

THIS IS BY FAR THE WORST BORING BREAKAWAY CHALLENGE
Since the moment Ovi won the first competition with his costume, the challenge was screwed. If only had Zegras won last year, it would have put this competition back on track.
NBA dunk competition has its gimmicks and theatrics, but most dunks still remain impressive.

I'm sorry if this is an unpopular opinion, but that was the worst Skills Competition I've ever seen. Players weren't trying, just look at the 2 and 3 man teams vs.the goalies, they passed the puck to each other like they were playing with children. Ovy and Sid teamed up during the breakaway challenge, that could have been epic, but instead, theused 0 skill in the skills competition and made it some cutesy stuff with Alex's kid. Worst skills competition of all time. P.S how hard isit for an NHL All-Star tohit a big surf board target anyway... SMH
I love Pasta 🍝 but I feel bad that he got pulled into this. Hopefully they can just fire whoever came up with this stupid idea and move on like nothing happened. If this continues every year then I think people will start looking for alternatives. Maybe another professional hockey league.

The only skill I saw displayed here was that a player used his son for a perfect score because he knew no one would give something with a kid in it a low score. This part of the competition needs to go. It's silly.

This is my favorite competition each year in the all stars, hope it’s in this years, we got lil o I, dodgeball Trevor, and magician jack, but the one in Vegas was better, better with the younger guys, than older

The breakaway challenge is easily the worst event in the skills comp. This doesn't do our game any good. Show us fastest skater, hardest shot, stick handling through obstacles, shooting accuracy, passing accuracy, etc. Show us hockey related content that actually showcases the high skill NHL players possess

I'm a die-hard hockey fan. I grew up skating frozen creeks and playing pond hockey; playing right up until college. New Years morning always had the best pickup games out on the lake. Everybody would come out. The young guys playing against the old guys. Women and girls would be playing shoulder to shoulder with beasts... moms would lace-up just to brings the kids hit cocoa and the adults carafes of hot coffee.
