I was playing comp on overwatch with a buddy of mine. He was doing absolutely awful. After a night of losses we both decided to get off. We both set our accounts to offline and kept playing the game. Next game we matched up and we were both in game chat. We couldn’t help but laugh.

I just tell people the truth. If I'm playing with somebody else, I say I'm playing with somebody else. If I'm just in the mood to play alone, I say I'm in the mood to go solo right now. If they can't accept that, they don't need to be on my friends list.
I understand the anxiety about how people might react, but trying to hide it makes it more offensive when they find out. Just be honest, and don't be rude about it. Apologize if you have to, but it's okay to want some solo time. If they can't understand that, are they even a real friend? Do you really need them on your friends list?

Turning yourself offline to advoid that simple interaction then getting caught lieing to them starts to create trust issues in the friend ship. Had a major blowout with some “friends” like this recently. I’m very much into single player games and the dudes I was playing online with only ever play the same shit. GTA 5. All the damn time. I had just bought the new Horizon game and I was binging it. Suddenly one dude starts getting toxic af with me because “I don’t hang with the boys” and tried to scrutinize me for playing something I wanted. Needless to say, I cut that person out of my life.
That was the right call.

This reminded me off when I used to play killzone 3, around 2011. I’d always see this same guy, daily, in game and 1 day he added me to friends list. Then invited me to clan. 1 time we playing a game and he tells me to hide in the corner and camp. It was a clan v clan match and I was like wtf? I’m not doing that and he got all pissy with me. Another time, he invited me to a game in killzone , while I was already in a match and I declined because of him trying to force me to camp in corner, during the recent clan match and he kicked off again saying that I’m out of order and I should Always play with clan friends. I just thought, screw this guy. I play games , like everyone else, to have fun. Not to be told to camp in the corner, the whole match. So, yeh, I cut him off.

If you can’t just tell your “friends” that either u want to play alone or that u can’t chill then they’re some things u need to work on.

Had a similar situation and eventually just had to drop the friend out of my life. It hurt, but it was also the most liberating thing I could’ve done.
I've been in that situation before with some of my lifelong friends, eventually I just ride it out and when I'm ready to come back I usually get reminded of why I stuck around in the first place. Obviously your situation could be worse than mine and maybe it's best for you not to associate with that person, but I know how you feel. Sometimes you've gotta drop somebody. I've done it a few times and it's been done to me a few times, it's just a part of life.
Been there but it's different. I was that annoying friend. Back then, I had reasons to act like a jerk to my friends, but looking back now, it could've been avoided if I had just spent a little time to myself. Now I spend most of my time alone, but at least I'm gonna use it to give up my shitty behaviours. Coz I'm still young.

I’ve noticed there’s three types of “friends” you will encounter if you play online long enough.
1. One-time friendly acquaintance: These are most common. A fellow player you meet for the first time and have a pleasant experience within the span of a single session. They typically get online rarely, mainly play games outside your interest, or otherwise never attempt to reach out to you again. Hence, they are one time.
2: Overtly obnoxious friend: A friend you could meet online or know IRL that incessantly wants to play with you the moment you appear online. They tend to be flawed in a way in which you may not want to deal with every time you get on to play something. Such as only playing one game, annoying personality, or unfriendly/annoying towards your other friends. Basically, a friend you still want to keep but don’t have the heart to either unfriend them, deal with on a regular basis, or hurt their feelings.
3. Old friend: The rarest and best kind of friend to make online. Have the same interests as you. Always a pleasure to have around. Stay as friends for long periods of time. And don’t change as you get older.
This is crazy on point. I've done this sooooo many days. I'll be grinding camos in vanguard or zombies and my buddy won't play anything buy warzone. But even though I'm not playing warzone he will repeatedly send me invites to join his party. So "APPEARING OFFLINE" was a game changer
