Tanukhid fanboys/girls, if I ever get round to doing a proper "How to Play the Tanukhids" would you prefer I played as a horde or settled faction? I prefer settled but if that compromises the Authentic Tanukhid ExperienceTM then I'd try horde.
These guys are actually very useful. They have extremely good missile block chance, and they're free, which means they are perfect cannon fodder against both missiles and foot infantry. You just place them in front of your pikes while the enemy runs out of ammo and you shoot at them with your own ranged troops, and if they try to engage you let the pikes pin down enemy infantry and flank with your powerful light shock cavalry. Doesn't matter whether the enemy tries to sit back or rush you, as the Tanukhids you can easily have both scenarios work for you if you combine pikes, light shock cavalry, and this professional cannon fodder.
@@etl4967 Yeah, I've tried that too. Yet this is like a hundred times more efficient, since the guys have zero maintenance cost, and excellent missile block chance which means they're able to take a lot of enemy arrows.
You can also do that with legio and menaulatoi, just place the legios direct in the pike line and form a testudo, i almost win every siege battle against the huns.

I often find it hard to use them in the game tbh cause pikes felt much weaker in this game, and they have no missile block chance as well, so anything more than a slinger's stone is gonna have a field day on them.
Yeah the Tanukhids' rely heavily on their broad array of cavalry and light infantry. Squishy but mobile. Even their light pikemen are speedy for their unit type but melt in arrowfire.
You need to try to stay horde until you get the "empire of the east" tittle then settle and you have access to end tier east Rome shock infantry. I think a mix between camel cab and tribal warriors is really what you need , but I haven't tried ever in legendary but if you manage to win with the Zenobia quest you are a legend.
Pikes are actually extremely useful. Your rebellion militia can take all the enemy fire, so your pikes are safe from that, and once you've pinned down the enemy infantry you flank with your shock cav
@@agustinl2302 the problem is that in Attila pikes are really bad, is better to have either shock troops with armoured pikes or just a good holder infantry with defense stance. But At early game pikes are really nice if you upgrade them.
@@SrMikicas Yeah, I was mostly referring to the early game, when pikes are cheap, the AI's units are not extremely powerful, and due to the circumstances they're probably the best you've got. Mid- or late-game I'd say two of those heavy armoured pikes per army is enough to help you in narrow streets when fighting city or yown battles, and also to protect your first line of infantry or missile troops from a frontal cavalry charge.
@@agustinl2302 My enemy had onagers so I decided to rush them. Terrain was open field with no forest. I sent militias forward and pikes behind but hunnic horse archers started to maneuver and shot my pike infantry I decided to retreat under horse archers arrow rain but when my pikes turn their back to go behind .... The hunnic light and heavy cavalry destroyed my militias over 6 seconds and under onager fire my spear infantry has perished only pikes and light cavalry left in my army. And hunnic horse archers killed all of my pikes without even engage them and my light cavalry couldn't catch up their horse archers in time so Decisive Defeat.. Your tactic needs to be updated. After this battle I lost entire Balkans in 2 turns in legendary difficulty

If you send militia in alone they get shock charged to death. By the time you’re fighting heavy horse archer armies you should pivot to some armored spears with good foot archers and fast reserve cav after all their melee cav dies charging your spears to clean up the rest of the cav archers. But you need a unit both good at missile block and anti cav to weather the huns arrow shower and shock charge combo.

Man, I thought the limitanei borderguards are bad enough, that means a single Oda long Yari Ashigaru from vanilla Shogun 2 in Yari wall mode can single handedly rout out these rebel militias.

Reminds me of favourite strategy of Vampire Counts in those games people here are likely to vilify - hiring full stack of zombies, finding biggest enemy army and creating biggest body pile possible. Except in their case magic exists and body pile gets back up:D
