- It's the battle of the (4th) century! 560 Romans take on close to 3000 Suebians, while Yrridian fights against the lackluster audio quality of a $70 Blue Snowball mic and a room that somehow sounds different every time he records in it!
Intro/Outro music is Morning Mood, composed by Grieg: • Morning Mood - Grieg

Yrridian in Warhammer: let me delete entire enemy army with Tyrion or Archaon alone
Yrridian in Attila: I felt bad about cheesing the enemy into getting shot by a tower
Cheesy as that final victory was, you can pretty easily spin it into something interesting - with the majority of the professional garrison defeated, Caesaraugusta's last defenders nevertheless held out: a final line of civilian militia and archers, untrained but determined to defend their homes.
Imagine the humiliation of your rampaging warband being defeated by housewives with butcher knives.
I legit love that the town maps are full of civilians, and that they sometimes just grab a household item and rush the enemy professional soldiers. Really makes the battles feel more real.
@@Yrridian Wait, WHAT? I never got Attila, I only have watched vids from you, from LegendOfTotalWar back when he was playing it etc, this happens? Where can I notice it?
@@Anonie324 You can see a bunch of civilians walking around on the left side of the screen around 11:22 (might need to pause/frame-by-frame to see them properly). Attila town maps are full of them but once the enemy gets near most of them run into their houses, with a small handful taking up arms and rushing them instead. It's purely cosmetic, the actual soldiers kill them every time they get in a fight, but it really makes the maps come alive. iirc if a house catches fire you can also sometimes see a bunch of people running out of the burning building.
If you want a closer look, I've also got another video from close-up of a civilian trying and failing to fight the enemy (it's edited to tell a different story, but she ended up getting into a fight shortly after the video ends and dying. RIP): czcams.com/video/mJo4hXSA1qU/video.html
@@Yrridian According to legend Epirus died because the mother of the soldier he was fighting threw a roof tile into his spine from a nearby rooftop, which paralyzed him.
"As the more professional defenders of Caesaraugusta broke and ran, they were subjected not only to the scorn of the enemy, but of the townspeople, who hurled insults at the retreating soldiers before grabbing whatever they could use as a weapon and running to fulfil their spot on the defensive line. The Roman commander, in his chronicle of the event, made special note of several such townspeople, including a 'woman, armed with naught but a meat-knife, who used it to gut three spearmen before the battle was done...' These townspeople are credited by the same commander as saving the defenders and the battle."
-excerpt from the book 'Caesaraugusta's Finest Hour', by historian Realman Notfake
"Pyrric Victory"
Yeah nah. Modders need to create an algorithm to account for Yrridin-level efforts like this.
Yeah man, for Heroic victories of this kind they really ought to count kill ratio way more than unit survival.
The way close victories are calculated also makes no sense since most of the times it was a basically unlosable battle, but you lost slightly more men than you had to. There should be a middle thing just called "victory" or similar.
An Yrridic victory
Those men really pushed it to the limit

"Looking at this, you may be wondering "What's stopping the enemy from sending units around the side and outflanking the entire army?". The answer to that is "Nothing."."
God bless superior Roman strategy
Scout Equites is probably the most valuable unit in the whole game, regarding how much you need to rely on it with both the WRE and ERE in the early game.
Scout Equites are the MVPs of every WRE defense. Truly heroes of the empire
@@skipperwarp9 Until you start getting ballistarii and unlock multiple barricades per siege. Ive had one ballistarii barricade take out close to half a stack before by rotating ballistarii units through once their ammo was out. Once you get Ravenna Elite Ballistarii, its pretty much game over for any filthy horde daring to attack your cities.
Yay Yrrdian is back with some Atilla content fresh from the market.
As someone from caesaraugusta (Zaragoza nowadays), im proud you defended our city that way, hoped we had an strategist like you on that time.
Great video
As someone from Gallaecia and probably a descendant of the settled Suebi, I say: boo! Boo, to you my good general. ;)
By the way, looking at the name Zaragoza, is it actually derived from Caesaraugusta?
@@the_tactician9858 actually yes, the arabs renamed the city from caesar augusta to Saraqusta in order to adecuate it to the arabs pronunciation, and when the Christian King Alfonso I reconquered the city, he changed the name to Zaragoza for the same reaaon
@@elgamid9162 That's actually pretty cool! Most Roman towns have gotten a name that suits the local population more, but in this case even the Arabs and Christians stuck to the original Roman name.
@@Bitan78 Germanic brother!
I’m glad you’re doing these battle commentaries again, your Alan’s Cavalry video is still one your best imo for showcasing such a cool and fun way of engaging the enemy
Yrridian to the enemy's general: Congratulation. You have played yourself.
Dad: Are you winning son?
Son: He. Is. Back.
Enemy: No u can't defeat my entire army thanks to one cavalry unit.
Me: Haha Scout Equites go brrr.
An excellent example of turning an unwinnable battle into a victory! Very good tactics in this video.
All players of Total war games, has that one legendary battle like this, in their career
It was actually really awesome how you explained you thought process, I'll try this combat approach next time I got for a TW Attila campaign! Stay awesome Magister Equitum Yrridian!
This is what I love about total war, especially when playing as the Western Rome. If you play your tactics right, you can quite easily turn the tide of a battle at your favor with better defense against a much stronger barbaric force
During a Very Hard WRE campaign, Virunum became my stronghold against Hunnic incursion into Italy as their entire force camped outside of the city, besieging it seemingly every other turn. I managed to hold the city with a single full stack army, the local garrison from the barracks, and extra units from a Veteran Garrison Quarters. I was holding off 3 full stacks of veteran Hunnic hordes each time using these tactics.
7:10 was beautiful. This battle could have been a whole episode on a medieval tv series.
The trick is on Turn 1 you march your army into their territory, discover the Vandals, and then offer the Vandals to join their war against the Alamans. This way you bypass the alliance. Then you hire some mercenaries and wipe out their army in the field. Then you can bring the two stacks in Gaul over and destroy the Alamans Turn 2.
I could see that working, but money's always tight and there's just so many potential enemies across the central European border that it's hard to know which ones are worth dropping coin to take out early and which won't be much of a threat. I personally tend to save those kinds of moves for Africa and Britain, where there's a small number of factions you can knock out permanently and never need troops there again.
@@Yrridian I vassalize Africa, they tend to move their armies away from their settlement leaving them open for a quick subjugation strike. They also tend to stay loyal. I hire mercs and destroy the Caledonians, Alamans, Quadians by turn 2. After that I'll usually try to knock out the Saxons or Franks depending on the situation.
Money is tight but you can disband the more expensive mercs (like axe & cav) and keep the cost effective ones around (pikes, bows, slingers).
Adding commentary was really neat. With your experience in Attila, do you have a feeling for how long a unit can roughly hold out in a certain situation? Or does it remain a bit of a gamble?
After 800 hours of playing Attila I find I can pretty accurately assess how most fights will go, but I still occasionally get surprised (like at the end of this battle!)
You are actually the reason i really wanna get total war Attila, it really looks like one of the better games you dont hear about alot!
Also, great editing on your past videoes and i do like this new kind of replay analasys too :)
According to some it is very bad. I don't know if you already got it, but it has it's issues. I love the game to death, I think there is something amazing about fighting incredible odds and then turning them in your favor. Though performance issues and bugs are still quite prevelant in this game. There are some mods to fix these kinda things (yes, the devs gave up and modders had to fix it, go figure), but apart from that it is amazing! I would recommend it to anyone who likes a challenge.
Oh my god the amount of second hand high I got from that battle. Great micro Yirridian!
The commentary was good and witty at times, whilst editing helped with understanding the situation. Top notch stuff as always Yrridian, always a pleasure to see your work.
I very much enjoyed this video. Thank you.
More of these would be highly appreciated.
This inspires me to go relive the pain of the WRE campaign for the 13th time

It's been 78 years and I was caught off guard on a new video that I fangirl so hard.
5:30 been a while since I've played, but I think pressing alt while hovering your cursor over the barricade shows barricade HP even if it's covered in units.
I love how (even if perhaps you did it by accident) you forshadowed the spearmen becoming a "big problem later on the fight"
I just wake up and watching this is definitely the best way to start my day. Thank you very much. May Roma last forever.

Your one of the Attila players that doesn't use cheese to win ( or maybe I didn't pay attention much ).
If there's anything I learned about spears being hard counters to cavalry... Well, your Alani tactics proved otherwise and broken the polearms line.
Please do more tactics, Yrridian, Lord and Patron of Horsemen !
The lesson you should learn from this video is that a wall of spears is worthless if isn't pointed at the charging enemy
I love Yrridin, hearing the music at 0:59 with the map burning reminds me of the beginning of Fahrenheit 451.
Glad to see you're still alive and Covid/Quarantine didn't get you!

Yay! (First) this said I enjoy very much this narrating system? You're thinking to make a sort of lore for a campaign in the future?
This was originally just going to be battle commentary and nothing else, but I thought adding a story around it would make it a bit more interesting, so glad you liked it! I wasn't planning to make a campaign video in this style, but that was only because the idea didn't occur to me. Now that you mention it, that could actually work pretty well for campaigns that don't really fit into a "how to play..." style of video!
