What you just heard was the legendary Mark Knopfler, known as an absolute master of the guitar. Dire Straits got started in the 70's and got really big in the 80's and got recognition back in the day but definitely do not get the recognition they deserve anymore.

This was written about an unknown band the mark saw in a bar while waiting on a flight. He said there were maybe a dozen people in the whole place and the band was playing like they were at a sold out Madison Squares Garden. At the end they said thank you, we are the sultans of swing.

Originally released in 1978 on Dire Straits' debut album, the 'Sultans of Swing' was a "dusty little jazz, Dixieland jazz band" that was playing down in Deptford. Knopfler described the pub as almost empty, except a couple of lads playing pool at the end of the pub in their baggies and platforms.
Knopfler told UCR, "I think they were actually surprised they had an audience of three or four. "I remember asking them to play 'Creolo Love Call' or 'Muskrat Ramble.'… I think they were amazed that somebody was in the pub who actually knew a few of the titles."
"I was just there to have a couple of pints. And at the end of the night, the trumpet player or whoever does the announcement says, 'Well, um, right... That's it; it's time to go home.'
"And he says, 'We are the Sultans of Swing.' And you couldn't be less a sultan of anything, you know, if you were in that band, on that night, in that pub," Knopfler chuckled.

Mid 1970s, Mark Knopfler and a few friends ducked into a small pub in London to get out of the rain. There was a band in the corner playing Dixieland Jazz, putting all their heart and soul into the music despite the place being almost deserted. At the end of the set, the band's lead declared "Thank you everybody, we are the Sultans of Swing!" It was such a grandiose name for such a dingy setting, the whole scene stuck with Knopfler, and he eventually wrote a song about it. Sultans is a love letter to jobbing musicians, the ones who play for the joy of playing. The ones who aren't selling out venues, who have daytime jobs but play anyway because they love it.

Dire Straits may not be a household name but they are very well respected in the music industry. They make good songs, they are all great musicians and are never flashy. So the style didn't immediately hit with teens (outside of "Money for Nothing") but everyone eventually becomes a Dire Straits fan given enough time.
P.S: Mark Knopfler is very well respected as a guitarist, considered to be one of the greatest of all time, making it to many top 10 and top 20 best of all time lists. His style isn't flashy like Eddie Van Halen or Randy Rhoads, so he wasn't a household name like some of the bigger guitarists of the time period.

@@The_Fat_Turtle Fully 70% of music sales now is music from at least 50 years ago. Rap and Hip Hop is turning into a bust for the "music industry." They know they are going to go out of business and all kinds of studios and labels will have to close their doors because they are way beyond what is a minimally sustainable business model now. So they will either give the music buying public what they want or dry up and blow away. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people. I don't want to dance on their graves but I have largely hated the music business since the mid-1980s. They aren't really interested in music but in selling something outrageous and vulgar to simple minded teenagers. And it shows. Just look at what is palmed off as music today ...

whilst it certainly had its problems, there was not the same kind of racial animus in England at the time as the USA was experiencing. I am of the opinion that this is what allowed so much blues to bubble into the musical culture of England at the time, as well as being a reaction to a kind of English traditionalism which dies in WW2 , the children of that period were looking to experience new sounds and found delta blues. from here what we would now see as the origins of rock music is being born. What is kinda sucky tho is it took some dudes from England ( who were white enough for a mainstream American audience) to reintroduce the USA to the treasures hidden in its own yard

Dire Straits is clasic rock, they released albums from 1978 until 1992, their biggest album is "Brothers in Arms" wich sold more than 30 million copies, Mark Knopfler, the singer, songwriter and lead guitarist stated a solo career after Dire Straits and still writes great songs.
This version of the song really does not do it justice, the full song has so much more guitar solo.
Mark wrote songs in many different genres from rock to blues also with country influences in some songs.

"Dire straits" was originally a sailing expression. A "strait" is a narrow water passage between two landmasses, and a "dire" one would be a particularly treacherous example. These were always very dangerous to traverse, especially in the Age of Sail, as even the slightest cross-breeze one way or the other would send you careening into the rocks. It's kinda the nautical equivalent of walking a tightrope.
Being in dire straits, then, means you're basically in extreme peril and flying by the seat of your pants while praying your luck holds.

He wrote Tina Turner’s comeback title track “Private Dancer.” Penned and recorded the soundtrack to “The Princess Bride” and 8 other movies. Dire Straits released 6 studio albums and a few live/best of’s, before Knopfler felt the big scene was too big and called it a day, as far as the band went. He went on to release 9 solo albums and is working on #10. Still active.

Love your channel guys. Dire Straits Live is an amazing experience. E.g.. Alchemy Live 1983 which has Sultans, Telegraph Road which is even more epic, Tunnel Of Love and Once upon a time in the West are amazing in this Alchemy concert. I highly recommend and you get the full appreciation of the great band members and Marks amazing guitar sound. Cheers👍👍

Formed in 1977 in London, England, Dire Straits was originally Mark Knopfler on lead guitar, vocals and composer; his brother David on rhythm guitar; John Illsley on bass; and Pick Withers on drums. "Sultans of Swing" (Benny Goodman, the jazz clarinettist, is considered the King of Swing) is on their 1978 self-titled first album; as many have said, while this original version is great, the live version from Alchemy, recorded in November 1983 at the Hammersmith Odean, absolutely smokes.

1978... Mark Knopfler on lead, in the top ten of guitarists of all time, Fender Stratocaster electric guitar being finger-picked (sans pick!), this was their top hit from their amazing FIRST album and that entire album is FIRE worth hearing beginning to end! My favorite track on that album is 'Wild West End' (last track). Their music was unique with elements of rock and blues often with that 'swung' beat. BTW... I was 19 when that album came out and love it to this day! If you catch 'Wild West End', check out the studio 'official' release. I haven't heard a good live rendition that measures up to it. 'Sultans of Swing' live has some vastly extended solos... especially that outro solo! 😏😁 Sorry I didn't catch your reaction earlier!

The guys from England, scotland Wales were into Blues big time, for some reason a ton of Robert Johnson records were available in England in the 50's and 60's, and these guys like Eric Clapton and Mark Knophler were listening to their parents records and getting that cross roads blues sound into their veins, laying bed with a guitar on their chest trying to pick along with the original Robert Johnson sound,,, and next thing you know you got some amazing self taught UK performers doing stuff no one had heard before.. what a great time.. when Jimmy Hendrix went to england he played Eric Claptons guitar.. and played with Cream, and such,, What a time it must have been.. mid sixties wow.. Mark Knophler wrote sultans of swing as a teenager as he watched a bad band hack it out poorly in a pub in lower south London...The Band actually called themselves the SULTANS of Swing and Mark just told the story....

Sultans of Swing was a band playing in a pub that Mark Knoffler went to once. He wrote the song about the band and the members. As for the Mark Knoffler, he has played guitar in styles ranging from Cajun honkitonk, to country, to hard rock, to folk, to blues.... Listen to Heavy Fuel by the same band to get more of an idea of what Mark Knoffler could do.

The blues as a music genre came out of slavery in the southern states. Call and echo (or repeat) is a staple of the blues and rock, and people would use a song in this fashion to put whatever enjoyment they could into repetitive forced labour. Chuck Berry and "Johnny B. Goode" was probably the genesis of what is known as most modern rock and roll. All of the big stars of rock cite Chuck as the guy from whom they learned what rock and roll guitar is. Dire Straits is blues and rock and even Spanish style guitar all rolled into one. They were MONSTER BIG when this album came out back in 1978. And Mark Knopfler is acknowledged as _easily_ one of the greatest guitarists of the Classic Rock era. 🎸🎸🎸💥💥💥

One of my favorite songs of all time.
Fun fact, if you look carefully you can notice that Knopfler is playing fingerpick style, no pick on an electric. Which is pretty uncommon for an electric guitar, but it gives him that really kinda soft muted sound instead of it being sharp and crisp. It's quite a lot harder to fingerpick something fast than it is to use a pick.

One line is “the band is blowing Dixie, double four time”, that’s a hint to what the song is about. In the song he is telling you he’s in a band that plays Dixieland Jazz, a specific type of jazz from New Orleans, at a south London club, and then he’s telling you about the band members…guitar George is the rhythm guitarist and is broke, Harry has a daytime job so he doesn’t care if they never “make it”. Etc etc. listen to it again
