- A live performance by The Four Tops, of their last Billboard Hot 100 Top 20 hit, "When She Was My Girl". This performance was done live on ABC TV's late night comedy show, "Fridays", in 1981. Introduced by Fridays cast member, Bruce Mahler. Check out the exceptional performance by the brass section! Outstanding, IMO!

Who's listening in 2023? Great performance, class, and the horns in the band are excellent!! 👏👏❤😍💃🕺
I am!!!
I'm still listening, I was sixteen then in highschool.
I,m here
Here June 2023 N H.
I am still listening to this great music.
It is now 2024 and I am still listening. I grew up in the era of the four tops. I remember when this song was number one. I truly truly miss the music of the 70s the 60s and the 80s. Music meant so much more because it was the words that went with the music. Thankful to still be here and enjoying the music of my era❤❤
I agree they are still my favourites after all these years. Levi s voice can never be replaced and he was such a lovely person. God bless them.
If only we had a time machine eh !! 👍
Fantastic mysic
I do too
I'm still listening in 2024! Boy I miss good music.
So do I, these oldies are the absolute best. ❤
Oh so do I!
april 2024 yes. still sounding great. never get tired of this.
Saw them with The Temptations at the mountain winery. I think it was in September 2023. They were tired and old, but they were still great and there was only one original I think from both maybe two from the Temptations that that was the best concert I’ve ever been to.
I’m still here 2024. I love this music. It’s what I grew up on.
Let's keep them alive forever. Music like this should never be allowed to die. This is beyond Classic.
I agree 100 percent.
Yes
Totally agree, what a class act they were !!
A man who could have walked away from the Tops and been a solo mega-star, but stayed with his boys. A legend, and a model of selfless professionalism.
Very true, and well said.
Amen
EXACTLY.....A TRUE LEGEND!!!
Yes Levi Stubbs and cousin to Jackie Wilson! 🎙
Loved Levi Stubb's an artist voice

Good memories mecca stevenage
He had a beautiful voice, it had like a cry in it,so did David Ruffin singers that just move you 💙 ❤️
Can’t beat that talent!!
That's my cousin Eddie "Chank" Willis whose guitar riff start this song. He was an original member of The Motown Session Band "The Funk Brothers" who churned out hit after hit for that Record Company. His distinct guitar can be heard on "Signed, Sealed Delivered", "I Was Made To Love Her" and many many more. He was self taught. His guitar style was very percussive. His chords usually coincided with the snare drum, that's how he got the nickname "Chank". So glad to have spent some quality time with him before he passed away August 20, 2018.....He's truly missed!
LEVI STUBBS--LOVED THIS BROTHER AND THIS GROUP--A CLASS ACT. RIP MY BROTHER!
I thought this kind of music would last forever. What a powerful voice Levi Stubbs had! Glad I grew up in the 60's and 70's. Miss those days as far as great music goes!

I live in Scotland but Motown is my favourite music.
I am 68 this year.
I don't feel any older. Only when I look in the mirror I see my precious Mam looking back at me. X 💗🕊💗
Levi Stubbs was an amazing talent. Vastly underrated as a singer. Never got the recognition he deserved, which reminds me: Kudos to him for declining opportunities to go solo, out of deference to his fellow Tops. May the great man rest in eternal peace. Entertain God with that voice!
That. All. Right. That. Real. Ok
I read he turned down a movie role cause they didnt have parts for the other guys....
Yeah Man CLASS
A tribute to you Mr Stubbs. I am the big red girl KUTAI

One of my best groups. Levi Stubbs what an amazing voice‼️
He brings good clean energy to my very core. David ruffin does the same. 😊
what I love about the 4 tops the most is the loyalty they had for each other
Levi Stubbs blessed us with his beautiful heartfelt voice. He was so gifted❗️
You don’t see showmanship like this anymore…so sad for the now generation.
And handsome to boot!
People that didn't grow up during this time, have no idea how Great it was!
Dec 2023. They’re still the soundtrack of my teenage years. Im old but the music isnt - still moves.
Tears in my eyes as I replay these great performances all these years later!

I was born during this era of 4 tops, but I get sad too this music was wonderful and easy listening but still touches your heart and it's very enjoyable.
Levi love this guy and I pray he, Lawrence and Obie are resting in peace.
Gets me every time too. Makes me so happy.

Levi Stubbs......a voice in a league of its own
Levi Stubs was one of the greatest tenors I ever heard!
For some reason ... listening to this song always fills me up a little.. Sad but sweet. Levi certainly knew how to sing a ballad! Miss you Levi. Glad I got to shake his hand when he was performing in my home town on one of the 4 Tops UK Tours. 🌹
Wow, What A Gorgeous Song.
Beautiful song 🤍Hello from Scotland 🏴 How are you doing today? I hope it's been a nice day? HAPPY NEW YEAR WISHES 🎉🥳💖
The Tops in their prime...can't imagine anyone not loving this song!!!

OK
I concur! An absolutely fabulous blast from the past. Just love ‘em! 👏🏻🇬🇧
@@jamessomers8495 no ft
Believe it or not this wasn't in their prime. Which was like 1965 through the 1970s. This song, their Grammy winning performance, was in 1982. I don't when this video performance was. But, just think of it, 15 years after "Bernadette", "The Same Old Sng", "I Can't Help Myself ", "Reach Out I'll Be There ", "Baby I'll Need Your Loving ", and so many more. And they were friends who had been together from High School. Instead of. What normally happens, where the best ones leave and go off on there own. (Such as Diana Ross, who actually wasn't the best. She was just the one that Berry Gordy liked and ended up having an affair with. As well as a couple of children. According to The other people at Motown, Flo Ballard had the greatest voice. Plus, she was the leader and founder of the group. Until Gordy got interested in Diana. And Flo also chose the name "Supremes". Which Diana didn't like.)
Unfortunately Levi was the 1st to pass away. From cancer of course. There is a Video, on CZcams, of a great performance of Aretha Franklin and the 4 Tops with Levi (in a wheelchair) shortly prior to his passing.
Best group ever! They don’t make music like this anymore. Handsome gentlemen, great singers!👏🏽👏🏽🤗
Ur absolutely right---fròm north carolina.💞
I especially like this song because Levi sings the entire song more than harmonizing. I particularly love his voice when he belts it out. Wish young people would learn to sing again.
I’m 70 hrs old and still love the tops and Motown !
Anything from Motown got the whole group moving! Loved it then, love it now! I went to high school on Motown music, and I don't regret a thing! 👍👍❤❤

I'm 40yrs old and I'm loving this performance, my parents played alot of 4 tops especially my mom.
Even though I was born this very year they are performing in this video.
I love Levi all the videos I've seen he has the best voice. His rhythm, voice and that beautiful aurora he exudes from his inner man I just love. I'm moved over to tears because you could see and feel there love for each other and the performing. It's different then some of the other groups.
The song is such a nice melody and a REAL live performance unlike today.
Basically 4 tops was the perfect name these guys were the cream of the crop at Motown and as far as groups in there day.

Awe that's a lovely tribute to the four tops, plus your Mum has great taste
Saw The Four Tops at a soul weekender at a holiday camp here in England in the 1980's. We couldn't quite believe that we were in the company of these legends. Absolutely blew the place away, and did about an hour more than scheduled. The audience just kept screaming out for more. Then Levi did a solo version of Gloria Estefan's Cuts Both Ways. It will stay with me forever, and can still make the hairs on the back of my neck rise. Lovely, devoted friends who made such sweet music. Bless them all.
Levi’s version of ‘cuts both ways’ is magnificent.Bognor 1991 met them leaving I think they were staying at the Grand Eastbourne.
No one in music has ever meant more to me than Levi
Look at the joy in Levi's eyes 💙💙
God Rest Levi, you have left so many good memories.
This is tough to watch. I am 79 and the love of my life and I are no longer able to dance to beautiful music like this. It makes me realize how little time we have left. But I am treasuring the memories while I can. Thanks for posting this performance.

I love this song because my heart was just broken from someone who I dated for 12 months and I found out he was lying and cheated on me!

+Ray G I'm 64 and that was the greatest time for music . Motown put the music world out to everyone.

+Ray G I'm 62, and the "music" I hear today is complete and utter RUBBISH!! There is nothing in this world like Motown music. I especially love The Temptations and the Four Tops. When Levi Stubbs died in 2008, my heart broke.

After all these years still a hit. Lots of DJs are remixing this classic, but the authentic one is the best

Motown certainly had its fair share of fantastic singers but if they had anyone better than Mr Levi Stubbs i have never heard them!!
Not only great singers…but showmen all of them with great stage presence.
OH MY GOD!!! i i never get tired of the Four Tops, I wish they were in concert now. I would be on the front row for a great performance. All I want to do is dance when I hear them. Real instruments/musicians…….no auto tune…4 men who can actually sing showing their talent. I am in my sixties….i miss the music of the 60s, 70s and early 80s. After that…it went to the dogs.
Levi Stubbs, his voice will live on for ever.
at least for me it will-i have 53 years listening to the 4 tops
The Four Tops....FOREVER❤❤❤❤❤
He had a pleading in his voice that was his & his alone.!
He put his loyalty to the 4 Tops before breaking loose and saying Levi Stubbs and The 4 tops.Unlike Diana Ross and The Supremes or Smokey Robinson and The Miracles.
Total package right here.
Clean cut.....not obnoxious and no filthy lyrics like the so-called "music" we hear today.....thanks for posting.
The Melodica player was priceless! He was consistent whether in studio or live shows, as did the brass section. 🎹 🎺 🎷

I was lucky enough, many years ago, to see live performance of The Four Tops. It was not only a great show, but they across as warm, sincere, friendly guys.
So many great songs by this group. They always went toe-to-toe with the Temptations. Both fantastic singing groups of the 60's. Levi Stubbs and David Ruffin were the greatest lead singers.
Back when music had meaning and the performers had class
don't forget, the performers had to actually sing
I could not agree more with comment.
This true they are the best.
You know what you are so right about that. It is a shame that is true but it is. Even in 2019 it is still the best
Say it again!! No theatrics just talent.
Still can't believe how dead-on everyone is in this live performance. The guitars, horns, keyboards, percussion and of course The Four Tops. Everyone is just incredibly together. So glad I lived in their time. As for you kids, today - I'm awfully sorry.
You are so right, amazing group all smiley happy faces and inthe days when you had to be able to sing. Levi one of musics special voices. Pure talent. Still play their music now and my only regret is that I didn't get to see them
Absolutely..they had to be dead on. There was no "ProTools" or "AutoTone" back then. Every performance was 100 live. Now days everything is Fake!!
You are so correct!!! Absolute perfection here in every position. Wow!!!!!
