I totally agree, they got lost in the shuffle at Motown. Berry Gordy was famous for making new acts sit the bench for a while after they got signed. Motown was just overloaded with talent. The Spinners never really ever had any success until their Motown contract was up and the went to Philly and hooked up with Gamble and Huff. That's when they had their hits
@@russblack443 As brilliant as 'It's a Shame' was (and still is), they were benched at Motown. Atlantic and Thom Bell accepted them with open arms and made fantastic records for us all to enjoy, to this day.
@@doug6203 ah sorry I misspoke I was thinking they'd worked with Gamble and Huff, but you're right it was Thom Bell. Motown did that to a lot of artists. I think Berry Gordy signed people without any intentions of doing anything with them to keep them out of the hands of other labels. The Commodores sat for a few years before they got a chance, the were just lucky because a bunch of people had left in the early to mid seventies and they were needed. Lionel Richie owes his solo career in part to Rick James drug use and pissing the label off. He fell out of favor and they strapped a rocket to Lionel's butt. Not saying he didn't deserve it he is a talented musician and great song writer. Lionel Richie saved Kenny Rodgers career writing and producing for him
