    Originally Recorded 3/22/2016
    As part of Indiana's Severe Weather Preparedness Week, a tornado drill was scheduled for Tuesday the 22nd at 10:15AM and 7:35PM. Many municipalities across the state participated by activating their outdoor warning systems while encouraging local schools and businesses to initiate their severe weather plans. During the evening activation, I decided to head on over to Bloomington, Indiana, to a Whelen WPS-2809 on the Criminal Justice Building. IU has six Whelens, a few of which are mounted on campus buildings. Monroe county, as a whole, has two systems. One is controlled by county, the other is controlled by the Indiana University Police Department. During the drills both systems are activated for the full cycle time, which in this case was five minutes. IU started first, with Monroe County activating theirs a few minutes later via FSK.
    Parts of Interest
    0:13 - DTMF Activation of IU's Whelens
    1:34 - End of EAS Message
    3:49 - FSK Activation of Bloomington's system (Monroe County)
    5:16 - IU's Whelens reach full cycle, shut down (2001 ambience)
    8:28 - FSK tones for Monroe County
    8:53 - Bloomington's 2001s reach full cycle, shut down

      +CAL'S ENGINEERING Lol, I wish the states had Carter Sirens. It's actually a 465Hz Whelen pretty close by, but it provides a nice harmonic tone. IU's campus has very dense siren coverage containing both 560Hz and 465Hz Whelens, so it sounds like one giant Carter siren there lol.

      @reverse thrust we have them here in Georgia, my county didn't have sirens before 1996, then an f2 tornado went through in 1995 Nobody was killed, but there were several injuries. The path of the tornado was very close to school. property. Not wanting to take the risk of having students killed in school by a tornado they ordered 5 2001-DC's to start, placed at the highest populated schools. They then started filling in the coveregae areas that had the most population in the county with 2001-SRN's (majority of system is SRN's). They then ordered 2001 SRNB's to fill. in gaps in coverage when the SRN went out of production, and eventually the last 5 sirens were 2001-130's, which completed the currnet system in 2007. They don't cover the entire county, since 50% is farm land with no houses for miles. 95% of the population however has siren coveregae.

    now during a planned drill or test tornado warning, why is it the sirens sound immediately. but when it's not planned and a real warning issued there's a delay between the warning and the sirens sounding.

    Do those Whelen sirens actually move air, or is it just a really loud speaker? I thought they were just speakers and not actually a rotary siren, although I think I can faintly hear the flow of air.

    • @DSRX100
      @DSRX100  Před 8 lety +2

      The hissing sound you hear is actually the screens vibrating. The 28XX series is notorious for this with its huge screens. Whelens are fully electronic, no mechanical parts are used to generate the sound. Hope this answers your question.

    Foster Hall
    SR 46 and Milo B. Sampson Ln

      @DSRX100  Před 8 lety +1

      +squiddy7863 Yeah, that one had confused me as well for the longest of time. I even drove by the place a few times. It turns out the location that's on their official map is marked wrong but I found it anyway on google maps. The siren is actually located more southeast. It's right along a parking lot near some frat/sorority houses. The parking lot is just South of the Delta Chi building. It's a 2805 and luckily street view is available on the lot. You'll see the siren hiding by the trees.

      The DTMF was produced by a Whelen encoder set off by the dispatcher at IUPD. The FSK was produced by a different encoder probably at the county EMA if I had to guess or a countywide dispatch center.
