  • We depart Gloucester in the Cirrus SF50 Vision Jet climbing to its highest operating altitude of FL310 flying through icing conditions on the way. The SF50 performs really well at altitude especially as we were only 500lbs below maximum take-off weight! Please do like and comment your thoughts - it really helps!

I’m a controller for part of the airspace you flew through and saw an SF50 on its way down to the Channel Islands today while at work. Didn’t know what it was so a quick search later I arrived here! Great video, lovely aircraft!

Great video, Ben. It's a quirky looking thing, the Vision. Avionics are really cutting edge, I love the Garmin functionality. I am used to the NXi but all of the Garmin translate across quite seamlessly, I think.
I am not normally a fan of smaller jets (prefer turboprops like the TBM) but this is something I'd like to fly, it seems very intuitive and perfectly set up for even single pilot IFR.

Absolutely fantastic video! I have been a huge fan of the cirrus jet since it’s inception almost a decade ago when absolutely no one had anything like it. Now you see things like the Honda jet and the Flaris and stratos trying to come in their own with one and in my opinion they don’t hold a candle to the sj50 especially the gen2. So glad you made this extended IFR video not many are on CZcams especially over Europe! Awesome job! I wish rolls Royce came out with a light jet like Honda and cirrus since they have been making fantastic engines for aviation since before ww2. In my opinion nothing sounds better than a roaring rolls Royce Merlin engine on a spitfire blazing thru the skies

Interesting to see the differences between flying in the US and Uk. Im interested why you have to get a clearance on the ground, ask for services on check in with a new controller, and then get an airways clearance instead of just one clearance on the ground. Thanks for showing us how you guys do it.

    • @joshuaseagrave5714
      @joshuaseagrave5714 Před 2 lety +19

Because of the way the airspace system works, in short. Unlike the US, where class G only extends up to 700-1200ft almost everywhere, there are large areas of the UK where class G extends all the way up to FL195. Gloucester exists in one of those areas, and because it's so far away from the airways you cannot just be cleared straight onto the airways. Instead, you're essentially cleared IFR to the controlled airspace boundary, hence the "remain outside." At airports inside controlled airspace or very close to controlled airspace, this isn't required, and you get your airways clearance off the ground.
Another factor is that because it's class G, and uncontrolled, you cannot be given a normal ATC service. Therefore, the UK has a "suite" of services available to aircraft operating in class G, depending on the needs. You can see that Ben first requested a basic service with Gloucester, because they are non radar, and a radar-derived traffic service with Swanwick Mil, who have the use of Radar. Swanwick then coordinate with London to get an airways joining clearance, which then quasi-clears the aircraft to their destination via the planned route or an alternate specified routing.
So, the first call with Gloucester is an IFR "clearance" to the boundary of controlled airspace, then you request your enroute service outside of controlled airspace, and then you'll be given your airways clearance. At the fundamental level, that is how the airspace system in the UK functions.

I like these tapes on the Visionjet because of the dialogue explaining why and how the G3000 is being set, particularly the various split screen presentations. With my knowledge of the three touch screen controllers, the fixed angle of the instrument panel allows me to follow the keystrokes to some degree. I just have to get my ear adjusted to British accents.

Is it possible to fly it from the right seat? I've been flying the VisionJet (the original in Xplane 11 AND FlightFX g2 in MSFS) hundreds of hours. I started in 2019 and haven't stopped yet. I absolutely love the plane.
But i usually use my left hand on the throttle on my lap and right hand on a side stick next to my thigh.
Yesterday, for the first time, i tried to flip it for an approach, so it closely resembles the actual placement of those controls. I almost crashed.
Can the SF50 be flown from the right seat? I know it does have sidestick on the right side as well, but the screens are tilted to the left seat, aren't they? Or is it possible to tilt them the other way?

It's not commercial flying though is it? Gutted, you started your career after loads of hard work - then Corona blitzed the aviation industry 👎🏾 I hope you're flying me on my intercontinental holidays in the future - good luck Pal

I meant in regards to Ross getting an IR and be able to fly airways. You’re right about COVID it’s such a shame - I’ve fortunately been flying a Falcon 20 for Draken the last 12 months but most of my Flybe friends are still out of work. Desperately hope everything picks up again soon.

Nice video, but I felt cheated that after watching the entire flight the landing was cut off. Epic fail.

Small debrief point, Ben. Your revised departure clearance was left turn to TRACK 345° but you read back and set up HEADING 345°. Unless that autopilot has reduced functionality compared to the GFC500, it has track select mode. ATC (Dan?) didn’t pick up your readback either.

Thanks, don’t forget I watch the footage back for hours during editing and able to debrief myself - that’s one of the best reasons to film the flights! Thanks for pointing this out though, appreciate it.

Yes I gave this a like. I rarely do that. BUT. this on video showed me something that I thought was IMPOSSIBLE with a SF50. A journey of 4110 statute mile. I though the max range of and SF50 was 1200 nautical miles, 1380.935 statute miles or 2222.4 kilometers.
Now granted I have not watched the whole video thru. So I suspect that there were AT LEAST two refueling/rest stops. But just the idea is AMAZING!!!!!
