    Thank you so much, Cara, this has been so helpful. And very affirming, actually, because my competitor research turned up so many 'fraught' stories that I've felt like my sweet and silly rhyming stories won't be of interest to publishers. I appreciate you critiquing the trend towards negativity and giving us permission to write stories that evoke a wider range of emotions.

    Maurice Sendak mostly worked with one editor, Ursula Nordstrom from Harper and she helped him to shape up WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. It started out as badly drawn horses and the title was WHERE THE WILD HORSES ARE. Maurice gave up on horses after realizing he couldn't draw them well enough. So that book wasn't rejected by other publishers.

    Thank you so much for this inspiring video! Please can I ask Cara a question? I have a children's book series in my head. Should I finish the manuscripts of several books in the series before self publishing or should I self publish one by one? Thank you so much!!!

    One of the best I've watched. Question: Could you use the twenty questions, as is, or with few changes to write a novel?

    This one is for Cara Stevens. I've written a young adult female book which includes several pictures/photos because a picture is often better than a thousand words. I want to self pub through Amazon + Kindle D P. Is that possible for a graphic novel? It's mostly words plus about 40 pictures. Please point me to how to resolve this. Thanks.

    Is it better to self publish or look for a publishing company?

    • @carastevens3781
      @carastevens3781 Před rokem

      My advice is always to see if you can sell it first. If you self publish, you'll have to handle all the marketing and distribution as well as the layout and all the behind-the-scenes details most of us never see when it comes to publishing. When you self publish, you need to either do these things yourself or lay out money to have a professional do it for you. Marketing to traditional publishers takes a lot of research, time and patience. It's a question of your budget and where you want to focus your efforts. I hope this answer helps.

    Why not? Is always my answer whenever I got that question. If it's a good idea that works, not every story has to tell a message. If it's a good idea that pieces together nicely, why not write it?

    What happens when your book is so unique that there are no books out there for you to compare it to?

    • @carastevens3781
      @carastevens3781 Před rokem

      You've asked a very good question. It's great to think outside the box and I'm curious to learn more about your unique idea! If you feel there are no strong books to compare it to in one way, I'd seek out books with a similar tone, look and feel, basic subject matter, or something just as outside-the-box as your story in a different way to show how that works. If it's truly that different, I'd recommend workshopping the concept with other writers or an editor to get their input. You may be missing a good angle that could help you sell it better.
