I mean maybe at first you get scared of it, but after a long while of terrorising, they probably got annoyed more than scared. Experiencing the same thing long enough, you'll get sick of it.

@@Toast_6 You don't have to say what it is. Just tell the authorities someone is murdering people, and I'm pretty sure they'll send an investigator to check it out. The only time horror movie characters don't get believed is when they prattle on about aliens and ghosts and whatever, and then scream, ""You have to believe us!". Then big surprise, no one believes them. Start with, "There's three missing people", or "Bob is hanging from the telephone pole by his intestines." There's no excuse for not being believed if they actually said what the problem was and left the more exotic details out of the story.
Just as a note about Charles, the developer Two Star said Charles only has two scripted appearances, the rest are because of Charles' AI
So is charles actually on the map at all times, kinda like in hunting bigfoot, or does rng say "aight time for charles to appear" and put him near the player?
@@nathansouthon3223 if he's on the map at all times you could (if you knew where he was always) only ever see him twice
@@nathansouthon3223 well if you follow him after killing him he runs to a certain point in the map and despawns there. It seems like Two Star made that area its despawn/spawn point if you not near it. Idk where it goes if you try to fight it there but no train can go in that area so I guess it was for that reason.

Apparently he can attack at any time. From the playthroughs that I've seen he can even attack during a cutscene!!! They might have fixed it since then but I'm not sure
The protagonist may not be a train enthusiast but a monster hunter. The character may have a museum filled with monsters he or she has hunted. And with Charles added in the collection, the museum may get more visitors. And Eugene gives off a veteran soldier vibe. Maybe him and the character had some history.

"I thought we could still fight like the old days" MC and Eugene could both be vets; it would explain how we are so comfortable with the variety of weapons we use. we retired and went monster hunting and Eugene went to work in the mine to support his son. when a monster shows up and starts killing then Eugene knows just who to get in contact with.
The fact that this game was made by only ONE person is insane. He did such a great job for a memed game and I'm so glad that MatPat got to play it as well!
Agreed! My only real complaint is that it's really short given the price tag, but I've gotta respect the talent this game took to make.

Yeah, but do you know how difficult it would have been to lip sync the character models to the speech, especially as an indie developer? It’s certainly something to make fun of about the game, but I prefer it that way rather than have the dev wait to release the game for another several months just for that feature.

Honestly, I think Two Star is pioneering a new age of NPC movement. Gamers getting irritated that NPCs move faster than your walking speed, but slower than your sprinting speed? How about making them move just slightly slower than the player’s sprinting speed?
Lore wise it's actually because it's not safe to go on foot when you're on this island thanks to our old spider steam engine friend, that's why he sprints as fast as possible

@@quackelstheduck2040i hate to break it to you but vehicle horns have to be triggered to go off in general and the way to do it is basically always inside the vehicle itself. the thing probably sets off the train horn for fun

The "Exoskeleton Theory" is actually quite good. Because Charles actually got the mining company logo on him. That could mean he found a train by the company and used it as armor.
The thing that always got me about Thomas the Tank Engine was the constant rolling of their eyes. Sassy sarcastic trains take no prisoners.
This'll give MatPat a lot to "choo" on.

MatPat definitely needs to do a lore deep dive on Thomas because his memory for it is off. The naughty trains served as a lesson on how to be a "useful engine"
If I had a nickel for every time I watched a video essay on Thomas the Tank Engine "train eugenics", I would have two nickels, which isn't alot, but it's weird that happened twice.
How about the time where they bricked a sentient, sapient, intelligent, emotional being behind a wall "Cask of Amontillado" style?! All because he was depressed, if memory serves.

@@scaper8ngl i found this episode on here and Henry (the train who gets trapped) refused to move out of the tunnel because he didn't want to ruin his green paint in the rain. Sir Toppemhat gave him the choice to come out or stay in there so he couldnt work. He decided to stay which also ruined his paint. He didn't want to look foolish and asked to be let out so he waited until he was needed and asked if he had learned his lesson. Still messed up though

My favourite part of every CZcamsr's gameplay of this game is when Eugene just sprints away. Ash's reaction is amazing 😂

Yeah but the models are amazing, the sets are beautiful, and the show teaches good lessons and morals. Just don't watch past season 7 if your curious. Thomas is actually a lot more grown up than you think .

If you go back and watch the older series of Thomas (Seasons 1-7) they gloss over several moments between a alive break van being smashed to bits in season 2 to an Indiana jones boulder causing destruction with every turn in season 5. As someone who always loves watching Thomas I would be ecstatic to see some theories on it!

Charles the choo choo is originally a Stephen King character from the Dark Tower series, yes, he is a killer train, yes, of course Stephen King would do that

There are so many layers to Charlie as well. Just like in Wizard and Glass, Charlie is in Gage Park in Topeka Kansas. The ticket booth number adds up to 19 in classic King style. It's pretty cool. A sequel having more Blaine like influence would be really cool.

A few Things:
I'm a train person (and an old school Thomas fan when i was a kid)
"Edward" was blue. James was Red.
Thomas and Friends rarely (in the older episodes) were the source of much of the dangerous chaos that happened on the island. It was the Troublesome Trucks (of all kinds) that, ether directly or indirectly, caused most issues.
I think Charles appearing is not scripted, maybe It could appear anytime it wants (maybe of course the story missions). But if you use the Horn in the Train, it can attract Charles, if you do it enough
Only two of his appearances are scripted, the first and last battles, everything else isn't scripted.

Luckily I always seem to manage to circumnavigate them by switching which line I take, since I only really catch the train to London & a couple of other places ~1 hour's drive/40-50 miles away and there are 2 main stations in my county that can get me to those places through different routes (especially when I'd rather take an extra 30-45 minutes going out of the way and changing trains than take a rail replacement bus, even if the train will take longer 😅).
There are a couple of express bus routes to the city close to me I don't mind though since they're frequent & reliable, and catching the bus into the peak district is quite pleasant since you can take in the scenery... but I still love trains way more and wish there were a train stop closet to me, and more trains and stops in general 💔. The LNER azuma trains are a particular favourite of mine 🤣

I personally think it'd be more convenient to upgrade your speed so you won't have to have Charles right up in your face
Fun fact: The name of the place, Aranearum, is actually a kind of fungus that eats the spider from the inside
Also also Charles apparently hid inside the train after it was attacked by Warren's men. Warren was a businessman who planned a mine in the island after it found something more valuable than gold, the eggs. When they found the cavern, it was full of eggs, but that isn't the only thing in there of course, of course there was Charles. who attacked the miners killed off some of them and the cave collapsed, after an explosion which supposedly took out Charles. But it was marked as an "accident". The masks are theorized to be so that they would be "hidden" from Charles and freely walk around

The flamethrower slowing down Charles really synergizes with higher levels of speed. It makes it possible to take Charles down using ONLY the flamethrower. Just a quick puff of fire or two, don't overheat it, watch Charles slow down a bit, let him get close and give him a few more puffs, repeat, and repeat, and repeat until you win.
Now we need a Game Theory about how this was based on Charlie the Choo Choo from Stephen Kings Dark Tower series and that Charlie is also a parallel to Blaine in the books. Charlie in the books was sent to Gage Park in Topeka Kansas where there is a train you can ride and more details link to the series to suggest it is a train named Charlie with evil intentions.
Don't forget that sir toppham hat threatens to scrap the trains repeatedly, and leaves trains out to rust for decades with no remorse.....Thomas lore is wild.

20:05 the fact that matpat's scream was exactly timed with the thunder in the game really gave away the sheer agony and desperation in matpat's voice..
The developer said himself in one of his dev blog videos that there is a good bit of lore in this game. I can confirm, that there is quite a bit there for people to find and piece together.

I grew up watching Thomas the Tank Engine and I cannot remember any episodes of it. I do remember being sad that the show ended though. 🤷🏻♀️

The Thomas and Friends show is surprisingly dark. One train dies from falling into a lake, one is so old that he was taken apart for scrap metal, and yet another was bricked into a tunnel because he didn't want to leave. TomSka did a really good episode if you want to check it out.
The old sister series to Thomas, Theodore Tugboat, is even DARKER, although I don't quite remember the specifics since its been off the air for so long.

At the end the reason Charles showed up outside of the mine WAS NOT scripted. The ominous music you started hearing in thr cave is an indication that he is showing up near you, but he cannot spawn while you are in the mine. That's why he came in runnin just as you entered the train.
When he is already around and then you go to spot he can't reach iirc he runs off after a while. Or if you damage him enough with giuns

This one definitely seems to be a fun one. I was always a plane person, but my father was a train person, so I have great respect for them! Plus, there is something special about the monster here. I can't wait to see more of the LOOOOOORE. I have to wonder if, as you suggested, the people aren't REALLY people.
Charles a prehistoric spider that used a train as a shell and is some sort of demon.
I remember Shining Time Station it was a very wholesome and enjoyable show. We would love to watch a film theory about it. I also watched Mr Rogers when I was younger and he still has an impact on my life.
