  • Diaper Rash or Nappy Rash. This video is on treatment, remedies, causes, fungal and cream to get rid of diaper rash.
Whether you call it Nappy or Diaper rash their both the same thing and it affects 1 in 3 babies. In this video I’m going to teach you everything you need to know to get rid of it.
    WHAT IS NAPPY RASH:
Nappy rash is a skin inflammation. Most cases are due to a reaction of the skin to urine and poo.
There may be red patches on your baby's bottom, or the whole area may be red. Their skin may look sore and feel hot to touch, and there may be spots, pimples or blisters.
Most babies with mild nappy rash don't feel sore, but if the rash is severe your baby may feel uncomfortable and be distressed.
In addition, a germ called candida commonly thrives on the inflamed skin. Candida can cause a more inflamed rash which is a brighter or darker red. Sometimes the rash can also become infected with other types of germs called bacteria. This will also make the rash more red and sore.
Nappy rash can occur or worsen when your baby is teething.
    For images please visit: patient.info/childrens-health...
    NAPPY RASH CAUSES:
Nappy rash can be caused by:
    • Your baby's skin being in contact with wee or poo for a long time
the nappy rubbing against your baby's skin
    • Not cleaning the nappy area or changing the nappy often enough
    • Soap, detergent or bubble bath
    • Alcohol-based baby wipes
    • Your baby recently taking antibiotics
    NAPPY RASH TREATMENT:
If your baby gets nappy rash, you can usually treat their skin yourself:
If the rash isn't upsetting your baby, at each nappy change apply a thin layer of a barrier cream to protect their skin. Ask your health visitor or pharmacist to recommend one.
Follow this advice to help look after your baby's skin.
    • Change wet or dirty nappies as soon as possible.
    • Clean the whole nappy area gently but thoroughly, wiping from front to back. Use water or fragrance-free and alcohol-free baby wipes. Read more about how to clean your baby - www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnan...
    • Bath your baby daily - but avoid bathing them more than twice a day as that may dry out their skin.
    • Dry your baby gently after washing them - avoid vigorous rubbing.
    • Lie your baby on a towel and leave their nappy off for as long and as often as you can to let fresh air get to their skin.
    • Do not use soap, bubble bath, or lotions.
    • Do not use drying powders as it contains ingredients that could irritate your baby's skin and may even be breathed in.
Nappy rash usually clears up after about 3 days if you follow these hygiene tips.
If the rash is causing your baby discomfort, your health visitor or pharmacist can recommend a nappy rash cream to treat it.
    STEROID CREAM:
Useful link on how to apply and how much to use: www.dermnetnz.org/topics/fing...
    OTHER RASHES ON BABIES:
If the rash doesn't go away or your baby develops a persistent bright red, moist rash with white or red pimples that spreads into the folds of their skin, they may have an infection.
Ask your pharmacist or health visitor for advice. The pharmacist may recommend a cream for you to use.
If the rash is severe, take your baby to the GP who may prescribe cream or medicine. Follow your GP's instructions on whether and when to apply barrier cream as well as the prescribed cream.
It's normal for babies to develop skin rashes, but it's important to know the difference between a minor irritation and a condition that requires attention. Use this visual guide to baby rashes to familiarise yourself with everything from nappy rash and eczema to impetigo and meningitis - www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnan...

Perfectly explained. This will help a lot of mothers.Having the air surrounding the area is beneficial. Plus hygiene is essential.Bathing once a day I agree.Using sterile water and cleaning carefully as you described is so beneficial. Of course changing as soon as possible each time. Usually works .Abraham thank you so very much. xxx

I had been seeing a lot of recommendations for mama nature's tiny tots salve and at first I was loathe to shell out almost 30 quid for a baby's nappy rash cream. But after pulling out my hair because nothing healed or prevented the nappy burns on my baby girl (it looked like real burns from a flame that had scabbed up!) I ordered it and it has been nothing short of amazing! I use far less of this than other creams so it lasts much longer as it has a waxy consistency and it is a lot less messy than nappy creams in the past as I just need to use a thin film now. As soon as I applied it my baby girl seemed soothed. I did slather it on during the awful stage but even then it was more pleasant to use (although a bit more difficult to wash off my hands than creams).

A lot of great advice here which I followed to the letter and it made a big difference but my son still needed a cream as it was not going away. I had tried all of the usual cream like sudocrem etc. and tried some others but they didn't help. I finally got rid of it and brought his big baby smiles back using the tiny problems salve by mama nature. It costs a lot of money but since I only use a little penny size amount it lasts a lot longer than other creams but it is still expensive for a baby product. I will keep buying it though until he is out of nappies.

DO you mind clarifying this for me? I am a pharmacy student
    - When we use petrolatum or zinc oxide for diaper rashes - they are used as skin protectants correct?
    - However zinc oxide is also a dessicant (it dries the skin out) - is this good or bad?
    - Do we in general want the skin area to be moist (not wet) because that helps promote healing but at the same time we want it dry because that also help promote healing?
    - Or does that depend on the nature of the injury - for instance i know for burns you want to keep the area moist - but is this different for rash - we want it to be dry (petrolatum will help maintain moisture within so I guess we want it to be moist too?)
    I really appreciate it. Thanks
