- 5.56 NATO Hornady Frontier 68 grain BTHP Match ammo ballistics gel test fired from a CZ 527 Carbine with 18.5 inch barrel.
Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
Leather gear: www.masonleather.com
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7-10’ from the shooting bench, depending on the cartridge and muzzle blast.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 10’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional. - Zábava

Let me know what you think about the video and please share, it’s a big help!
Visiting the websites above directly supports the channel and helps me bring you more awesome videos!
You need some video's on economy scopes that we can can count on! I don't see why inexpensive scopes have to give unreliable accuracy but that has always seemed to be the case. We could use your help!!
I think you're the first one I've that gets some velocity data on these. Thanks!
Could you please do this test with the 75gr 5.56 loading of Frontier?
This 68gr leaves an insane wound track from a 12.5 5.56 at 200yds
Hornady's Frontier is some of the best shooting factory ammo I've ever shot.
These are my go-to rounds and kind of wish they would stay a secret
Literally stockpiling it, stupid cheap for what it is.
Agreed
I’ve been buying them and stockpiling for a few years. I filled around twenty magazines with them. They are my SHTF scenario rounds for my second rifle. My first is another POF Revolution 308 DI with 16.5” barrel. My main round for it is also Hornady. Hornady Black 168 grain which groups consistently around 3/4 moa. The 68 grain 556 group well out of my POF Minuteman. I haven’t tried their Superformance round in 556 but the 308 is wicked. I’m thinking about buying three boxes of 556 to try but for the price…..I think I will stick with the frontier 68 grain.
Sorry bro, these things are the hottest shit we can buy by the case.
Getting harder to find.
We must all call Frontier( Remington???)
and tell them to forget their 55grain shwag and keep pumping this out.
Great test man! My new favorite rifle ballistics channel keep up the good work!
Glad to be of service!
I hand loaded a bunch of these projectiles, good stuff.
Thak you for your .223 Series. Great as always! Greetings from Germany and as we hunters say Waidmannsheil. Happy christmas.
Glad to be of service!
😂 hopefully more videos come out soon. Got my ass anxious to start watching my nightly 6pm video again.
Awesome Video and I’m sure this would make a GREAT PD Load.
Glad to be of service!
I love these videos! They really are helping hunters make better decisions in selecting ammo. However, I have a fever, and the only prescription is more 270 win test.
Coming as soon as I can get to it 👍🏼
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather Thank you!
Good data! Thank you!
Looking forward to more 300blk. Deer ammo tests ! Great vids !
My best friend's dad got a 7pt buck with AAC's .300 Blackout 110gr Vmax load the weekend before last and the terminal effects were impressive. It was more of a diagonal angled rear shot (as opposed to perfect broadside) through the back of the left lung and out the front of the right lung, passed through heart as well, and got caught in the hide on exit, didn't fully pass through. Projectile mushroomed perfectly.
The shot was made at 50 yards and muzzle velocity we tested before hand was averaging a hair over 2400 feet per second, so the projectile probably killed that deer at around 2300 feet per second at that distance? Gun is a 14.5" ballistic advantage barrel .300 Blackout AR.
The deer jumped 5 feet in the air when it got shot, stumbled over a levee for about 20 yards and dropped. Easy to find & we did get a blood trail, but it dumped at least a liter of blood suddenly in the middle of cleaning it too. Vitals were jelly and it bled out internally. Exit wound underneath the hide was at least the size of a quarter where the folded back/expanded projectile got stopped. 👌
These are my go to for my own handloads . My 1-7 AR and my 1-8 both do really well with them . 2495 brings some super accurate loads
What recipe?
I bought 500 rounds of the Frontier .223 68 gr. BTHP last year. Unfortunately my Winchester XPR does not set them off every time. About 4 rounds from the first box had what looked like good firing pin hits but no detonation. Those that did fire were very accurate though. So I just use them in one of my AR15's that seems to have no issues with it going off. I think it just something weird between that particular rifle (it fires every other brand of ammo I've shot through it) and the ammo (it shoots through every other rifle I shoot it in) that just isn't good for each other.
I've used the 55gr hp for varmint and predators, they don't explode like a vmax, but they definitely don't act like a fmj either.
Thanks for the video
Nothing beats Frontier 75 grainers when it comes to their brand..
They are very accurate loads . I’ve gotten 1 moa from a 20” PSA at 200. Sig OTM 77gr I couldn’t get better than 2
@@kevmoful Sig vexes me, because I have their white box 5.56 77 grain MK262 clone and it did really well with groups. But others have gotten the 223 77 grain and had horrible results. So with Sig I think it depends on if you got their MK262 clone or their 223 77 grain OTM. But the stuff in in the white boxes has done well for me. But each rifle is different and has a preference for what it eats well.
To confirm what you mentioned in video, 5.56 loads use a shorter test barrel and are generally loaded hotter than .223. 5.56 box velos are generally pretty close.
Hornady says on their website they test with a 20” barrel.
Federal fusion has a new Polymer tipped fusion. Brother you have to test those. The fusion line are outstanding, we’ll see what this polymer tip does.
The CZ 527 Carbine is one of my favorite rifles. I have the 7.62x39 model and is crazy accurate with cheap steel case ammo. I got it for 500€.
I bet the 75 grainers would do a little better.
Interested to see if you could do a comparison with hammer down/ lever revolution (the more popular ammo for the 336) with the old and the new marlin 336 to see the velocity and ballistic gel differences between micro grove and the new standard rifling.
Pretty decent results here. We didn't get consistent accuracy at 100 yards with 2 different AR15s. 2" was the best we could get. Our chrono #s are basically the same as yours in our 16" barrels. We also had some flat primers and cratering with extractor swipes also.
That's interesting, these in 55gr shoot nearly one hole groups from my rifle, maybe give them a try, I also use the 223 version as I get better accuracy from them for whatever reason.
I get sub moa with 55 grain maybe it's your barrel some ars just don't shoot tight groups
@@austinhowze6280 You can usually find something they will group decent with.
@wymonwatson1309 2 inch groups are considered good for some brands they focus on the gun running more than it hitting
My experience w .223/5.56 hornady black and frontier loads is that they are very barrel picky.. i have a couple 16” 1:7 barrels that will shoot the 75gers in .6moa groups, and another barrel will shoot the same lot in 8” groups… i don’t understand it.. both barrels will group good 77g match under an inch.
Hey man, Do more 350 legend! Love your content
Hey Mason are going to do a complete comparison between Tikka T3x and Winchester 70 Extreme Weather?
You think your gonna test the 223 nosler 55 gr BT varmint at some point?
I’d like to see 90 grain nosler ballistic tips from the .243
So do the odd calibers get more views or the common ones like the 223?
Thats great varmint bullet performance.
Where have you been buddy? Been missing your videos.
Would still love to see you test m855 ammo. I’d imagine it would do a solid job. Plus people absolutely hunt hogs with them. Be an interesting test.
I’ll try some
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather awesome! Love your channel I binge all ur stuff regularly. Carried the m855 during my years in the service and seen it perform well and always imagined it would do well in a pinch as a hunting round. In the south people definitely use it on hogs even cheaper ball 556-223. It might do terrible but either way I think it will be a fun test. Keep up the good work I’ve changed my mind on a couple of hunting rounds watching your tests.
This stuff is great,if you can find it. It used to be easy to find, but it seems to have disappeared.
Could you test Frontier 55gr FMJ? Years ago I watched a video of hornady published and the round mushroomed
Eventually
Hornady states on their website that they velocity test this round out of a 20” barrel.
Do a test with fort Scott TUI
Could you take a look at Fort Scotts 62gr and 70gr in 5.56?
Great video! I'll subscribe when you start doing 308 Winchester tests... hint, hint. 😇 Cheers
Just curious, what's the twist rate on the CZ 527?
Have you used this bullet for deer hunting, or know of anyone? NC deer hunting question, thanks
Why there are no 308 tests on your channel?
Because 308 is so effective why test it…
Review a 308!
🤙🏻😎🇺🇸
Nice bad guy load for the house..............
Mason! Where the heck are you? Stop goofing off, we need more vids plz!
Why would they make a BTHP if it was intended for paper?
Accuracy
I hate it when manufacturers print "5.56 NATO" when the cartridge is not 5.56 NATO. There is only one 5.56 NATO, the SS109 aka M855 aka Green Tip. NATO only adopted that one load.
This is merely one, of hundreds, of 5.56X45 loads. 🤠
What about M193 55gr?
What should it be called then? It's based off of NATO specs.
5.56x45, 5.56 nato, 223rem, etc... all of those cartridges are dimensionality identical and can be safely fired out of the same firearm.
MK 262, MK318, M855a1 are all 5.56 NATO rounds.
Great Videos! Are you going to test .223 Winchester PowerPoint 64 grain. I’ve taken over 10 deer with it and always have a pass through. Just wondering what your test will show. Keep it up
Eventually yes
Yay!
Practice ammo?? Not with todays prices 😂
Good job Mason! BTW measure that barrel! So we know exactly the length!🎉 🥸 we must have standards!!😊
Glad to be of service! The barrel
Length is stated in the analysis portion of the video, and 1/2” isn’t going to make a material difference one way or the other.
