I was madly in love with Alice Matthew's as a 9 year old boy. So sad each time she was gone and so elated each time she arrived back home. I wrote Jacqueline a note later years and she kindly responded with a signed photo. She and George and Robin Strasser were so exciting to watch in the 60's and beyond. So many other actors were as equally wonderful during this time frame. It is etched forever in my head and heart... and that 9 year old is now 63.
its a shame that the writers couldnt write for Alice in the 80s as well as Lemay had done in the 70s....too many cast changes by this time and the core Mathews family were practically all gone...Pat and her family were written out by this time, Russ wasnt around but would return but not interesting-just to introduce a daughter, Sally recast too many times-this show had too many transition periods...it never was as good as it had been in the 70s with the Mathews/Randolphs/Frames/Corey and the slowly declining ratings in the 80s were proof...the loss of Beverly Mckensie as Iris Carrington really hurt this show i believe...
Yes, some of the best Soap Folks were Men back in the day. Bill Bell, who Co-Created Another World and Harding Lemay. In the UK The "Men" are the driving force behind Soaps. Tony Simpson (Warren) was the driving force behind Coronation Street that debuted in 1960 and it's still on The Air. Paul Rauch did well but sometimes he was so difficult. He fired Maeve Kinkead (Ex-Angie Perrini Another World) and Ex Vanessa Guiding Light because she wouldn't dye her Hair.

It would have been interesting to have Rachel and Alice revisit the past after Ada and Mac told her what she did. At this time the show was an absolute mess. It was not surprising they used her ineffectually.
A shame that JC never returned after Rachel married Carl. Carl was responsible for Sally’s death and Alice could have reignited the feud because Rachel was with the man that killed her daughter.

It's too bad that AW didn't rehire her and George Reinholt in 1981 -- instead of hiring two new actresses to play Alice --and the very miscast David Canary as Steve Frame. I think this huge misstep cost the show ratings from which AW never fully recovered.

Although from time to time they "Recast" if they don't feel a character is working, they are killed off and it's the Writers Way of saying "And You're Not Coming Back!" which gives them a chance to do other work. On the UK Soap Opera Emmerdale there were Two Actresses who played Pat Sugden, the First Frazier Hines being the Assistant on Dr. Who. Pat #2 died in a Car Crash. Then there were Two Sarahs, Sarah #1 quit the show, while Sarah #2 died in a Barn Fire. There were two Jacks but Clive Hornby who played him from 1980-2008 until he died of Cancer was considered to be the "Only" Jack. Kind of like how Robin Strasser played Rachel #1 but to Fans Victoria Wyndham was always Rachel. Also Jenna Louise Coleman who played Jasmine Thomas from 2005-2009 would also play the Assistant on Dr. Who but also plays Victoria which is broadcasted on PBS in North America.
Now this is why Courtney was daytime royalty. She is playing the grown up Alice in her hands the one millions of viewers wanted to see before she was fired in 1975. The long and complicated history of these two characters should have been the tent pole of the series for decades to come. Already backstage at the show with NBC and Procter and Gamble the most compelling story was taking place. So much potential at this point. Oh well.....
I agree as well. I don't know how NBC and P&G let this time period slip away. They have Courtney, Victoria Whyndam, Linda Dano, Anna Stuart (and then Aunt Liz, Sally Frame). With all of this talent, I believe AW would have risen back to the top of the ratings.

Jamey was like 6 months old when he finally found out.
I wish they had more medical staff working alongside Courtney during this time. It was a HUGE waste getting rid of Broadway's Joe Morton (Dr. Abel Marsh). And it would have been the perfect time to bring back Linda Metcalf (Vera Moore). Linda and Alice such a warm friendship while they were nurses at Bay City General -- if only they had given Linda a real storyline (after her boyfriend, Zach Richards, was "phased out," she never had much to do). Also, Alice working alongside slimy Dr. Royal Dunning (Mike Minor) would have been interesting.
Sadly, JC doesn’t have a good rep. Everyone said she was extremely dif to work with and Robert S. Woods said that she was the meanest actress he ever encountered.

I also notice how different UK Soaps are from US Soaps. They are on for only 30 Minutes in The Evening and they don't have Proctor & Gamble as Sponsors. If an Actor/Actress leaves One Soap they almost always do another one. Also there isn't any Music played and when a Recast comes on there isn't an announcer to say that The Role of So & So is now being played by So and So.
