Open Hoof Surgery - Mirri

  • Mirri was rescued from the last livestock auction, and she had horrible damage to her hoof. Dr Nancy performed an extensive surgery, and Elijah worked his blacksmith and farrier magic to make her more functional.
    Warning: Graphic!

How lovely to see a young farrier making a shoe to suit not just whipping a ready made out of the truck. That is an art many young farriers drop once they’re clear of farrier school.
Dr Nancy is awesome, such a clear down to the point vet.
Lovely to see farriers & vets working together & bouncing ideas about the situation off each other, not just one overriding the other, the epitome of teamwork.

I really appreciate Elijah working on Merri’s front feet while she is sedated. Then she will avoid having to take her front weight onto her back foot while she is standing.

    • @Bonde7280
      @Bonde7280 Před rokem

Thats not how weight distribution works. Weight in front is distributed amongst front legs. Weight in back likewise distributed amongst the hind legs. He is doing it solely because he can and he has nothing else to do at the time anyway. Waiting for the vet to do her thing.
If you want to avoid straining the bad hind foot. Its the healthy hind leg you would want to avoid working on, while she is standing.

I bought an 8 year old mare with a pretty major heel bulb injury but not this severe, it was fully healed already and not loaded with proud flesh. I had to keep her shod to minimize the movement and keep her sound if she was in regular work, but she could go barefoot otherwise. She lived to the ripe old age of 34.
Whomever did her care post injury did a great job. This was an amazing trained horse, hot but light as a feather on the bridle, super balanced and athletic. Honest, fearless and hard working. Truly the most responsive horse I've ever ridden in my 58 years of riding. I've a hunch she was a high dollar performance horse whose career was ruined by this injury. I used her for trail riding. Hyper, but a joy to ride! Best $550 trail horse ever.

What a great caring vet, and an amazing farrier. I use to have a farrier that i watched make shoes for my Arabian Show horses many times, and your farrier remnds me so much of the one I used back then. Very through, very meticulous, and I love that. I like that little mare, and hope she does well with all the work that will need to be done to keep her pain free, and reasonably sound. I have had a couple of horses that needed special shoes, one did have a bar shoe, and even though it is a continual care thing, in the long run it is well worth the effort, extra care and time spent.

Your expertise and the care and respect you have, giving each indivual equine, a good quality of life without pain. You Care! You love your work, doing the best possible with what you have. Horse Plus is so lucky to have you all!
All of you there at Horse Plus, are doing your utmost for the Equine World, unnumerable times every day!
There are lots of cogs in a clockwork, and your runs sincerly smoothly, even when things are so darned hard and heart breaking. You all behave professionally, calmingly giving and showing our 4 legged friends nothing but the best.
You give hope and love for all you do at HP. Those Auctions must be terrifying for those poor souls, driven through there, many in atrociating conditions, caused by Mankind. I love to see the transfirmations of these beauties - from the moment they step off of the transporters, go through the medical part and get put in pastures with food, water, love and care - where they recouperate from the horrificness they have been put through, as good as possible. To see them getting a forever home is so gratifiyingly beautiful.
Tawnee and Jason - our thanks and love for all you have done and made possible and for all the greatness and help you are sharing to all those who want and need help

You guys (all) are simply amazing. Hope it works and that heel grows out so she can have a life. Literally you all are making something out of nothing (to work with). What a lucky horse to have this team not only save her from auction but try to give her a functional life.

    Hi again
Alot of TRY going on here with excellent cooperation! Super idea to create this medical channel to see hear and learn about some of the more sophisticated situations. Real and valuable upgrades to have a surgery room and full time vet.
Heartfelt thank yous for trying to save her and give her a chance especially with reduced pain and discomfort.
Hoping for continued progress to success for all...
    God bless

We have become a nation of WIMPS! I am thrilled you have this channel so those of us interested in medicine can see what really is going on. Thank you. Personally I don’t know why a special channel is necessary, but Y T is crazy.
