- SINGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it is working with public transport operator SMRT to ease over-crowding on bus service 190.
As part of the effort, six additional half-way trips have been put into service on Friday nights, starting from October 18.
Empty buses are being deployed midway from Somerset Station bus stop at Orchard Road to help ease crowding and ensure that commuters along the route can board the bus on Friday nights.
LTA said these six extra half-way trips are in addition to the 24 half-way scheduled bus trips that SMRT is already running from the YMCA bus stop.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, LTA also said it is working with SMRT to study if it is feasible to add additional trips on the service on weekdays from 9.30pm to 10.30pm to cater to the increase in commuters when shops along Orchard Road close for the day.
The authority also said it has investigated the over-crowding on service 190 buses on October 4 and the long waiting time for commuters at Thong Teck Building bus stop that evening.
It found that a bus breakdown and traffic congestion along PIE and Chua Chu Kang Way had affected the bus service that evening.
As a result, instead of the 39 scheduled bus trips between 9pm to midnight, SMRT operated only 33 trips.
LTA said SMRT should have responded better to the delays caused by the bus breakdown and traffic congestion.
SMRT should also have taken measures to maintain service levels on service 190, which typically has high demand in the city area during the evenings, LTA added.
In addition to putting in more bus trips to the service, LTA said it has also asked SMRT to deploy more staff to the affected bus stops to help manage commuters boarding buses.
The LTA statement comes in the wake of a viral video from a frustrated commuter who watched over a dozen crowded buses pass by on Friday, October 4.

The Bukit Panjang-Orchard service they referring to is our current 972, but even so 972 frequency sucks
No 972 Will Go To Orchard Road, Bencoolen Street And Bukit Panjang
and now 190 has 3 door ADL enviros
Yes, I agree. PH you can wait up to 1/2 hr - 3/4hr before being able to board a super pack bus. While weekends you only need to wait for 10mins. As for this incident, the bus thar brokedown was a Sv985 bus on PIE.
Ya it's holiday only. But seriously its a holiday they think they own the road is it? They think other parts of Singapore nth better to do like them
Bukit panjang to orchard is 972
In 4 years ago in Hari Raya when I board 960 from Bt panjang to Bugis all complaining before BKE at Bt panjang there they have to wait up to 15 buses to Little India or bugis
bro i went to school today and i got on bus 190 and it was so crowded.

@@haechiwr shit right I thought he said 2013
Deploy more bendies on 67 instead of just SD and DDs
It's not smrt problem. It's the cck residents problem. They have mrt to take also dun want. They have nothing better to do go orchard for what. Choa chu kang should be renamed to Chao chu kang. The bus frequency is nth compared to other parts of Singapore. Cck just think they own the roads. So it's cck problem. Not smrt
walao eh I from cck and do you know 190 now deploys ADL E500 and MAN A95? u don't know why don't u go search on land transport guru lah u bodoh
hello? There is no MRT around Thong Teck Building bus stop. Plus Choa Chu Kang MRT might missed there bus stop that is far away but nearer at 190.
