  • Trying a bit of a new format for ideas that never seem to fit into a proper theory or analysis video.
I'm mostly discussing a thought surrounding the reason behind why investigating the origin of words is forbidden by the Sumeru Akademiya. Not a fully-baked theory, just food for thought.

Irl, the origin of language to an extent is forbidden to study, because it could evolve child abuse. Many have long wondered if language arose once or multiple times, and people have considered getting an isolated group of babies to try this out with, but a linguistically deprived, isolated group of babies would suffer, not just from being exposed to the elements, but also from linguistic deprivation potentially barring them from future social interaction.

Another curious thing about Alhaitham's trailer showed the cyclical loop of the world. And of all animals he mentioned, was the birds. On many mythos, birds are used as symbols of freedom or passing messages. Which this make his phrase even more particular, is through the Traveller's journey, we are seeing many bird allegories and mentions such as: Mona's story about the crystal bird at the GAA event, Kusanali's parallel with a caged bird, Barbatos's flying lesson, Xiao's real form is a golden bird and even Leonard's Gliders were made to copy the birds's wings.

I think it’s also worth mentioning how Egyptians had the notion of words having power and their myths sometimes involve using sacred words to manifest new things (creating something from nothingness).
So if these perpetual machines have been inscribed by symbols, they can be considered as primitive form of hieroglyphs. So maybe Dehsret managed to create things from chaos or rather abyss in a meaningful way (which also mirrors the creation myths where chaos reigned supreme until order was born from chaos).
Also, this would tie in with Ruin machines being advanced versions of King Dehsret tech since they also use a core with dark power that Ararycan said was related to Marana.

the origin of words being a sin in teyvat has perplexed me ever since i found out. especially considering that alhaitham's heravatat darshan, which is basically the language department, it's interesting that they're more concerned with actually translating languages. which is toeing the line very close to looking for the origin of words since you would usually break down the word by it's syllable origin. so it's kinda interesting that they list this is forbidden and yet they still try to study it in a very round about way. like some of the other sins are tempering with human evolution & tempering with life/death, then you just have finding out the origin of words. one of these isn't like the others 💀
i think it's very fitting that alhaitham is someone who we see continue to talk about this sin considering that he's very logical and it's such a prominent part of him that everyone who has a voiceline about him mentions it. so it's kind of interesting that he's the one trying to grapple with this. and he's accepting that not having an answer to everything is an actual answer in of itself. it's like he's accepted that he's given up trying to look for the answer and is rather trying to make do with what is available. which you would think for someone like him he'd research til the very end, but he doesn't.
and it think its because he's accepted that the scribe can't record everything, not like irminsul. and yet, we've seen that not even the irminsul can completely record everything. and it comes full circle that the only person who we have seen be mentioned to be the true recorder of this world is traveler. so of course it's by fate that we would meet him and go on this quest. the entirety of sumeru can be boiled down to, there is nothing about teyvat that can truly be recorded accurately. the only thing that can trusted is what traveler has seen since the moment they opened their eyes in teyvat.

Another reason to possibly avoid researching word origins: it may prompt discoveries about the unified civilization.
Modern linguists have used modern languages and preserved old languages like latin and sanskrit to reconstruct words in a language they call proto-indo-european. The shared (and missing) vocabulary of that proto language has been used to analyze the culture that spoke it.
What could Teyvat residents discover if they traced their modern words back to the unified civilization?

    • @atthewmayeohanekay9294
      @atthewmayeohanekay9294 Před rokem +6

They’d discover, as we did, as Orobaxi did, that Celestia and all of its “rules” are just as alien to this world as the traveler is, and if the assload of evidence we have is to be believed, they haven’t exactly been good to Teyvat.
Orobaxi was killed explicitly because he discovered the unified civilization. The denizens of Enkanomiya were forced to submit to a cultural genocide before being allowed above ground. The inverted civilization in the chasm and Sal Vindagnir, civilizations that shared architectural similarities with the UC and presumably history, were both destroyed by celestial nails. Zhongli, one of the few people who know what really happened in Khaenri’ah, prevented from speaking about it. Celestia takes great pains to keep certain knowledge hidden.
Scholars being “destroyed by their knowledge” seems less likely than Celestia inflicting horrible punishment upon those who would dare reveal the man behind the curtain. Makes me wonder if “forbidden knowledge” is ACTUALLY a cognitohazard, or if Celestia just attached madness.exe to a bunch of files to keep them from being accessed.

@@atthewmayeohanekay9294 that's a really interesting theory. I would go with it if I still believed that Celestia are outright villains, but they could be a necessary evil.
The answer would depend on whether Irminsul is their tool or something that always existed. If the former, they are using it to control Teyvat, if the latter, they're just protecting it. Apparently, it's vulnerable to metaphysical concepts that manifest very much physically if you think hard enough (like King Deshret)

Y'all know that biblical tale of god creating many languages to prevent humans from coordinated and building a tower to reach heaven?
What if all words have their origins in Celestia, who created the many languages to keep the 7 nations divided. That's probably also why they keep an archon in each nation.

honestly it's so weird to not be able to search for the origins of the words, as someone who does find lenguage very intriguing, learning the origin of things in your own lenguage is such a cool part of history, and records that are lost are a pretty upsetting occurence. I personally don't think forbidden knowledge corrupts because of the knowledge itself. Let's say, you read before sun and moon, the knowledge we find in there alone is, not enough to make anyone go crazy. My theory is, forbidden knowledge itself is not dangerous in it's own, but because it was thrown into the abyss, it got corrupted, an now learning it will also corrupt you. Basically Teyvat is a closed bubble therefore there's nowhere to throw the trash to celestia piles it up in a trash dump and just like real life trash dumps it becomes some of the most toxic places to be around. But I wonder why the origin of words are forbidden knowledge in the first place? Maybe to cut any related ties to the unified civilization? Of the time of the seelies, the three moon sisters and the primordial one? Ashikai how dare you make me go into a rabbit hole at this hour, I need s l e e p, but I also need a n s w e r s

It's possible the Abyss or something made forbidden knowledge more dangerous, but it wouldn't have to. It just had to undermine enough of what people have used to understand how the world works. Think about learning that Earth wasn't even the center of the solar system, the effect that have had on religion. Imagine how we would react to conclusive evidence of intelligent, technological intelligent life.
There's also old ideas about true names of things having power. It's still true that being able to describe something more accurately gives you more control over it.
Put that idea in a world that has actual magic in it, and you also have to worry whether words themselves can invoke fundamental powers; an incantation. I'm also reminded of Golems, which were animated by 'holy' words inscribed on them, or written down and placed inside them.

There was this one Haravatat scholar who lived out in the woods. He attempted to translate a book bound in human skin and inked in blood... 🤣
Okay, on a more serious note. There are a lot of connections between breath, words, and creation/life in a few religions. Such as "In the beginning was the word, and the word became flesh." or "God formed man from clay and breathed life into him." etc. There was even an alternate version of the Adam & Eve story in which God realizes that humans have eaten of the Tree of Knowledge of Good & Evil, then God worries that humans might eat of the Tree of Life and become Gods as well. That's why he kicks them from the Garden. ( at least in that version)
Mixing that idea with the Odin story of the discovery of Runes is fascinating.

Ash please see this! I have a theory!!!!
So the opening cutscene everyone things is the start of the story, but what if it’s the end? Each nation teaches a lesson. Monstadt is that you can be free if a god demands it of you. Inazuma is the lesson about eternity not being perfect. Sumeru is about breaking the cycle of Samsara’s.
    So:
What if Teyvat is in a time loop, a Samsara, and when Dain says about ‘Reweaving fate’, he actually means breaking the Samara before the next Samsara cycle starts. It would mean the cutscene at the end could make sense as both twins would have regained all their powers, and could be challenging the sustainer of HP to try to get to the gateway that leads to the divine/past the fake sky. This would mean that at the end of the game, we would see the opening cutscene again, but with a different ending (not being captured) as they have changed their fate/broken the samsara.
This would also make sense as in Honkai (spoilers):
The new chapter revealed that their universe runs on a 500 year cycle, and at the end of this cycle, the Herrescher of Finality essentially resets the world and starts again, much like a Samara!!!

As a Jew it's very interesting to me how they are now also incorporating Hebrew mythology, if true! There's multiple stories, but it all begins with a Rabbi inserting a piece of paper in a clay doll's mouth, and it coming to life. Perhaps Genshin will follow the mythological story with Dottore's ruin guards?

Ashikai, I hope you read this, because I feel like I might be onto something, all thanks to you.
Investigating origin of words could be interpreted as questioning the reality itself, if it's indeed leading to the programming language of Teyvat, so to speak, and opening the door for doubting nature of all things.
Forbidden knowledge, then, could represent inability to deal with the consequences of it, namely nihilism and suffering that comes with your understanding of reality being torn apart.
It's also boundless potential, chaos, negative space around the Irminsul as you said. And "power from beyond" that Dainsleif was referring to at some point.
If my ramblings are too chaotic (don't have time to properly think it over and formulate it), I'll just refer to Nietzsche, nihilism, abyss that stares back and the concept of overman.
I'm not deeply familiar with Nietzsche's work, just know that he's misunderstood as some kind of proponent of nihilism rather than someone contending with it and looking for solutions
You're clever and will figure out the rest, I reckon. I'm myself a bit lost deep in the weeds here.

I think you're spot on with the runes and programming language association. The idea that there are multiple programming languages that more or less do the same thing is very interesting b/c it implies that these specific ones are a higher-level abstraction (e.g. Python, Java) that might all compile down to a lower-level, more fundamental machine code (e.g. binary) that's closer to maybe the source code that governs Teyvat, that enforce the Heavenly Principles. It stands to reason that studying these symbols too closely can lead you to a closer understanding of the truth of this world which could be considered Forbidden Knowledgeᵀᴹ.
The idea that things that are not written down can be equally if not more important is also very interesting. If we know that writing things down explicitly makes them subject to be tempered with, what if there was a way to write them down indirectly, not just in the form of allegories but with actual negative space? Like Sudoku. Just given a valid initial state, the Sudoku puzzle can be solved to create exactly one end state, if one understands the rules behind that puzzle. This might be more useful than just using allegories b/c you'll get the exact same end result every single time without the chance of misinterpretation like you could with an allegory. The lore in this game is something else.

It reminded me of questions I had about genshin and linguistics. How do they communicate together. Like we can deduce there is only one language with geographical specialites like dialects since they don't seem to have any difficultes communicating with each other and the traveler. But then where does the 20+ langages came from (since summeru academics need to learn at least 20 to pass). We can concluse they are dead language or hillichurlian. But then why is there absolutly no influence on that language (maybe only just slight vocabulary since again they don't have any difficultes communicating with each other). And also since Faruzan and Qiqi who had a clear cut with civilisation don't seem to struggle that much with vocabulary, accent and stuff. Why is that language stuck in time ?

    • @GodmotherAya

I don’t know if it’s the same in CN but in traveler’s voice line “ About Language “ Paimon says that the traveler has developed a good grasp on Tevyats language, referring to it as only one language. So according to this voice line all of Tevyat speaks one language. I guess the ones Akademiya students learn are all ancient ones that currently aren’t in use by humans ?

It makes me think of black holes. Like how we can't actually detect them due to the nature of a black hole, but we can find them due to observing the effects they have on the space around them. It makes me wonder if we could think of descenders like information black holes; like we will be able to find them by figuring out the gaps in data and the impression they leave, even if irminsul contains no memory of them. Same for erased data like Wanderer.
Weird thought, what if the reason no one calls Aether and Lumine by their actual names is because no one is capable of remembering them. Like, if memories is just pulling from a personal databank in Irminsul, and the info about the Descenders isn't being recorded, what if no one can actually remember their names. I dunno, seems like something that would have come up, but maybe the Traveler is just used to it by the time the game starts. Both names have definitely been said in the presence of a few people (Paimon included) but never once is it addressed why the Abyss Twin called you by a different name.

Yes, pagan literature was kept and immortalized for the ages, but only under the lens of Christianity. Any type of work that didn't opperate alongside Christian ideals either wasn't allowed to exist or wasn't written down faithfully.
