  • I'm making a kitchen knife from 1.2842 high carbon steel. The bolster and pin are made from nickel silver and the handle is made out of (I'm guessing) wenge wood. This knife is meant as a wedding gift for my aunt and (now) uncle.

    Welcome back to another round of "Guess the Handle Wood". Today we've got yet another unlabeled staircase cutoff. I think it might be Wenge 🤔

    Funny - as I watched the intro, I thought to myself "Wonder, if he dulled that knife on purpose?"... you did. That is almost sacrilege.

    It's fun to see you try and learn new stuff ! The sides of the blade are brighter than the bevels because you haven't ground them, so there's still a thin layer of steel that has lost a bit of carbon during heat treating. Less carbone -> etches brighter. Since you did the bevels after heat treat, this decarb layer has been ground and you have fresh high carbon steel that etches darker 😉

    You've chose to make one of the hardest bend on the bolster Sven 😂! Even with milling machine it would be pain in the guts lol.. 3 blades failure because of the mark.. thats a bummer :/... think about electro etching- it's less problematic and it works great if you have good masking stencils. And +1 Like for the intro! Your videos are remarkably pleasing Bro:) Great looking knife: this is very cool wedding gift :)!

    • @NjordArtisan
      @NjordArtisan  Před rokem +1

      Thanks a lot, Dawid! Nickel silver has to be one of my new favorite materials to work with. No cracks with such a sharp bend and polished it looks amazing, plus it doesn't take a patina as quickly as brass.
      I thought a lot about electro etching but I think for one my logo has a lot of small sections where it get's a bit difficult to make a stencil and I actually really like the smoother look of a hot stamped logo.
      I just have to stop being so bad at punching it 😁

      @@NjordArtisan Last I worked on it, I ran into a bit of a problem with the guard, origionally i was going to use some 20mm square bar, cut that in half long ways, but then decided on 10mm bar as a test. A few attempts broke while I was drilling holes for the slot, but I managed to get a decent piece fit. Also found out that the blade is a whopping 8mm thick. This week though I've been at home dying from the flu. 👍

    • @NjordArtisan
      @NjordArtisan  Před rokem +2

      Thanks a lot! I'm glad you liked it! I never worked with silver so I can't say for sure but most of what I read it looks like the real deal. It has a slight brass tint at first but when sanded and buffed it get's a real nice shine with a very light golden tint. Hope that helps 😅

    das Messer ist wirklich schön geworden, ich habe aber eine frage, hat sich die klinge durch den kaffee wirklich verfärbt?

    • @NjordArtisan
      @NjordArtisan  Před rokem +2

      Vielen Dank! Ja, das mit dem Kaffee klappt wirklich. Meistens benutzt man eine Kaffeelösung um den Kontrast bei Damastklingen zu erhöhen. Kaffee hat einen pH Wert von etwa 5 und ist damit leicht sauer, deshalb muss man auch so viel Pulver benutzen und so lange warten.
      Je nachdem wie die Zusammensetzung des Stahls ist, widersteht er der Säure unterschiedlich. Manganhaltiger Stahl, wie dieses Messer, wird häufig benutzt um eine schwarze Lage im Damast zu erzeugen aber man kann so natürlich auch die ganze Klinge schwarz bekommen. ✌🏻

      Thanks! Yeah I tried that and it definitely works great and is a much safer way of getting the logo on there, but I really like the look of a hot stamp, especially on damascus. Plus I can use the stamp for leather and wood as well so I thought it might be worth the investment.
