    I found a baby male albino mantis crawling on my shoulder one day when I watching CZcams. Had no idea where he came from but I figured, “hey I know how to care for you! Might as well keep you!” And so I did. I ended up naming him Meroda. Once he got bigger I decided to take him with me to my school and educated a few people on mantises. He was always so calm and chill but didn’t like it when anyone but me held him. He definitely knew I was his caregiver. I swear mantis are the most intelligent insect out there! Such curious and smart little guys hehe.
    Anyways! During his very last shed something went wrong... I have no idea what did it, but his wings ended up becoming deformed after shedding. They never fixed themselves. But luckily it didn’t affect his lifestyle and actually ended up making it safer! Because like I said, I do take him out and show him to people, and if his wings were fully developed than that meant he would be able to fly off and end up hurting himself. So I guess things ended up working out in the end. And since his shed he ended up becoming to big for his enclosure. I didn’t have anywhere else to put him, but then I had an idea! Since he can’t fly he’ll be perfectly safe on my bamboo! Right inside my tank too! So not only will he be outside his cage with nice fresh air and something to hold onto, the evaporating water makes it plenty moist and humid. :)
    Sadly Meroda is now gone... He recently died a few months ago. But I grantee you he lived a very happy and healthy life! He even became famous throughout my school and was loved by everyone! Educating others about mantises! It was fun while it lasted. And I won’t ever forget him. 💚
    You can find images of him on my Instagram @CornBeanSoup! I even have a video of him here, after his last shed. :)

    When I was a kid, my brother caught a praying mantis and we kept her and she had babies. We moved them to a large fish tank when they hatched, used a LOT of fruit flies, and allowed them to cannibalize as they pleased. There must have been 100+ babies, and we couldn't keep them all. We followed the advice of misting the enclosure every day, but we always made sure Greeny (the surviror) had at least one bug to hunt in her enclosure every day. Sometimes she would go a few days without eating, so I think that she was not overweight. It was really fun.

    One thing I find really impressive about mantids, is they eat EVERYTHING on the prey item. Like a dubia roach, jumping spiders usually eat the bottom and the top exoskeleton is left and even tarantulas leave remnants of the shell but mantis chew right through and eat everything.

    The last time I saw her it was when I got back from work, she was a bit further from her usual spot and I noticed that she had lost a bit of waist size.
    I went to check her bottom, just to notice some dried foam.
    She had layed her eggs!
    And while I was I looking around trying to find the nest, she had left (the odd part is that she chose to run away just after I got home at the end of the day).

We always let it go around this time of year (when fall starts getting cooler) so they can breed just to be completely sure that we aren't impacting the population. The first two we had were Chinese, the other ones were Carolina.

I also kept him in a large enclosure with lettuce planted at the bottom, branches all over the place and loads of crickets running around. He lived a surprisingly long time and moulted well but if I get another one I will follow your guidance as I was probably just lucky with him and I wouldn't want one to be eaten mid moult.

So for those of you who find a mantis and want to have it as a pet, but don't have the proper tools to keep it from dying, I highly recommend keeping it for a day or two and then releasing it into the wild where it belongs! That's the only way to ensure that it'll take be able to care of itself better than you ever could!

    Hey guys!
    Let me start off by saying I love your channel a lot. I really do! But I wanted to touch on some things that I found misleading in your video regarding mantis care. I've been in the mantis trade for quite a while now and one thing I've found about most mantis care videos is that they treat all mantis care as identical. That simply isn't the case. For instance, your ghost there actually prefers moderate to low humidity (as he's from a very dry climate) and the amount of misting you did in his little cup was way too much. Some mantis species even need as little as 10% or less humidity to be successful. It's very species dependent and there's no catch all among common hobby mantises.
    Additionally, a number of mantis species require additional heat (Desert mantises need spotlights of up to 110 degrees!)
    Also telling the difference between males and females can vary depending on the species as well. While the segment method is pretty universal, it can be incredibly difficult to determine the difference on some species. On Orchids, for instance, their collar around their neck is brown in males and green in females. Male ghosts have long, thin, crooked head crests while females are shorter and more blunted.
    Paper towel may not be enough for certain species (something like a violin or devil's flower mantis definitely needs a mesh).
    Also regarding feeding, it's generally advised not to feed crickets, as they commonly have lots of bacteria in their guts and mantises can be sensitive to these. But you can also feed wax worms (not too often, too fatty) and the moths that pupate into, as well as soldier flies or their larva, grasshoppers, butterflies.
    Another thing you didn't touch on that I think is very important with these guys is that you should never, unless you are 100% sure you have a native or naturalized species, release your mantis outside. It can be very dangerous for the ecosystem.
    Anyway, as always, I look forward to seeing more videos from you. Please include these little guys in the future!

    • @rdizzy1
      @rdizzy1 Před 5 lety +11

      The thing about the crickets isn't necessarily true, even though often repeated. www.mantidkingdom.com/are-crickets-bad-for-mantids/ You can breed your own crickets and keep harmful bacteria levels down.

      @ahnishliayaq3522 Před 5 lety +21

She'd always stay on the plants in my room - would go from one side of my room to the other sometimes, but would always climb onto me when I misted my plants in the morning. I kept crickets in an old butterfly net-cage thing and would use my snake's feeding tongs to feed her one of those.
    She never had a name, but I'd always call her pet names:

      ca t. They are extremely aware, which is probably what makes you uneasy. I had a huge mantis outside my door and as I was walking up I spoke to him and acknowledged his presence and he just kept watching me until I got in the door and went back to stalking his prey. The mantis is such a cool insect.

    Found a huge mantis while I was on a walk, in the middle of the road and baking in the sun. I took it home to give it some shade and water, and was able to ID it as a Chinese mantis which are invasive where I live, so I didn't want to put it back outside. So I made it a quick enclosure and gave it a dubia and it seems to be doing very well! Been years since I've kept mantises, and never this big, so it's been exciting. Seems to be a female, thinking I'll call her Erin :)

    The fact that just yesterday, Brave Wilderness just did a video on praying the praying mantis bodes very well for this video's performance, and it ought to give the whole Snake Discovery channel a solid boost! This video will show up in the recommended videos for the Brave Wilderness video. It'll be heavily pushed by the search algorithm, and it'll associate your videos with Brave Wilderness's demographic. This will introduce your channel to a population made up of viewers who are almost guaranteed to be interested in your content. A huge win; congratulations!

    I am SO getting one of these...I just discovered mealybugs in my houseplant jungle. Is the size enclosure needing to be snug simply for food hunting ease? I'd really like to put these guys in a terrarium that I can place infested houseplants into, or even lift the lid to let them/it climb on the plants at it's leisure. I know NOTHING of these behbehs except that I've wanted one since I was a kid.
    edit edit edit lol! Would being near an actual humidifier for my tropical plants be TOO much humidity? Is there a such thing with these fellers? I keep isopods as terrarium buddies & 'pets' as well as springtails. You mentioned not feeding them every day so, would it be a horrible idea to toss a handful in to live & clean with the springtails? Will the mantid not eat as it needs? I'm thinking the powder orange ones would be good as they breed more readily than my other 4 species.
