When They Say "Koreans Hate Black People"... | Life in Korea #24

- This video shows my typical experience in Korea. The lady was sweet and this has been my experience many times. We cannot say Koreans hate Black people because not all Koreans are the same just as not all Black people and their experiences are the same. I hear this statement all the time in the comment section of some of my videos. This is just my personal experience. Sometimes you run into good, and sometimes you run into bad. Overall my experience has been good!

I wish you have good Korea life.
Sometimes good, sometimes bad.
The humans life is similar at everywhere
Where are your students?
Im so happy i found this video... all people do is make videos about how negative koreans are towards black people... not all people are the same and you displayed that here... i love it😍😍
That lady was so cute and kind!!!! I just want to hug her!!! Do you think she would try to rub me??? Hahaha, no I'm just kidding! I love this video because so much positivity comes out of it. Keep it up and stay smiling!
Love you, Charly! I'm planning on going to Korea alone this year, I'm turning 18 in 3 days. Can't wait to go! I've been wanting to go since I was 9 years old!
Happy Birthday when it comes and have a wonderful time in Korea :)
Happy Birthday! I turn 28 on the Feb 7th! :D
Cherelle Mitchell
Thanks SO much, you're so sweet!
charlycheer
Yay! February buddies! And thank you!
***** IKR?She's looks bomb :P
Thank you Charly for sharing your experiences with the world. You inspire and encourage me to travel outside of the country. It is very close-minded for someone to say "___hate black people" when they know nothing/very little about that country. I was having a conversation with a close relative and she suggested that we go down to St.Louis to visit some famous restaurant. I told her I was not interested and that have no desire to be in the Southern states atm. She got mad at me and told me that I was being very close-minded. I wasn't. I've lived and experienced what it was like to live in the South and it was alright but I did not enjoy it enough to go back anytime soon. But when I told her that I wanted to travel to Japan. South Korea and London she right off the bat told me that "they don't like Black people" and that she knows the history between "those people" and Blacks and that she watches the news, etc. I just shook my head at the hypocrisy. I watch your videos along with other Black youtubers who are living in Korea and can easily debunk that negative statement. Of course, there are people who don't like Black, but you can find them on EVERY continent, but you can't use that as excuse not to travel. Whatever they may say, I will continue to plan and educate myself so that within the next couple of years I can go to Korea or Japan or London. Who knows where I'll go first.
you should go, I've been to Korea and never once experienced racism as a matter of fact, they were so nice and I felt at peace. Honestly it doesn't matter where you go, just get out of the states(no just kidding be careful in some countries, not because you black but because they might be dangerous to go alone)
+Natalie Stephens Weird. I'm from St. Louis, I now live in NYC and I am from the MIDWEST. St. Louis isn't southern at all. Too bad your missing out on one of the most unique cities in the country. We have the St. Louis Zoo, the second best zoo in the country. It is beautiful and FREE! Forest Park which is the 7th largest urban park in the nation with two museums, the zoo, a planetarium and a boat house inside. The City Museum, one of the coolest and most innovative museums I've ever been to anywhere, and yes I've traveled. And to top it off, it's one of the most affordable cities in the country to live, with great schools and communities. And about that famous restaurant you were probably going to visit...Sweetie Pie's is GOOD. So open the horizon on your own soil too so you don't miss out on something great!
Deja Turner Thank you for informing me. I apologize for miscategorizing St.Louis as a Southern state. That was very ignorant of me. My relative only wanted to go because of Sweeties Pies and I thought well that's great and everything but I asked her what else we'd be doing if we went. She had nothing else to say, so her response and her attitude turned me off. But now I'm reconsidering having read your comment. I had no idea that were more attractions and places to see in st.louis. i livr in the north west so i dont know much about the mid-west states. I don't hear a lot of people talking about them around here either. But really, thank you for informing me. I'm learning something new every day.
There are so so many experiences shared by black CZcams vloggers about this. And overall from these, I'd say most people in Korea appear to be curious but kind, particularly if you speak their language and know a thing or two about their culture. The older they are, the more this is unlikely, but particularly in Seoul and the younger generation it's becoming less of a big deal in general.
There are a few cases of racism talked about by this v-loggers but it seems like maybe 10-20% of the time? And can a black person in America honestly say they haven't experienced it, even if it was kept in their heads? People everywhere are racist. They might actually be LESS racist in Korea overall. It's just not socially acceptable here in the U.S. to say what you're thinking - but you can tell when they're thinking it.
So I think (only judging off of the videos I watched) you'll experience the around same amount of actual racism as most places, but lots of staring and curiosity and perhaps some innocent questions that might normally be offensive.
Xelestial You are very perceptive and seem intelligent. What you said is very true, including Korea. Thank you.
wow the Korean lady is very kind she's holding her hand the whole hand lovely
The things about Koreans is that they are Too nice.... a little too nice it's like they are so nice that it's to good to be true
Kangoo Kangoo Thank you.... some you tube says we are very racist, but the truth is that we really did not have much contact with foreigners so we do not have the concept of racism... perhaps feeling uncomfortable or shy at the beginning.
That's awesome that she teaches free Korean lessons! What I'm thankful for is the opportunity to go to Seoul in a few weeks, I'm thankful for your informative videos, and I'm thankful for friends on South Korea that are willing to take time out of their day and show me around.
You are such a sweet person, I can't believe how upbeat you are!! Thank you for your videos
Charly you are an inspiration. I love watching your videos. Your last daily vlog video was amazing. You are so inspiring. It's hard to push past the current place you're in and going out and living life. I have always strived to do my best and be positive but within the last year or so I've been in this place where I want to get out there and live. I'm in a city that I'm not in love with, a profession I like but ready for something else and I really want to do and be in a place where I'm no longer feeling like not where I want to be. Thanks again for your inspiration!
Had a little hiatus, but I'm back to watching your vids - forgot how happy and cheerful I become after watching you :)
Lovely to see your friendship growing and food as always looks amazing!!
X
You are such a good person. I loved this video! You are so genuine, I feel like not enough people are.
I enjoy your videos, Charly. Keep them coming, they are inspiring and fun to watch.
I'm thankful for my family. Luv your positive attitude it's a breath of fresh air on the YT
I really like to video! It's great to see that you've met someone who truly enjoys your company. Seeing how she would never let go of your hand is heartwarming~ It's the smallest things that can make the world such a beautiful place :)
You seem like such a sweet and kind hearted person :) love your videos
this Is not the guy in the photo but his girlfriend, I am thankful for the clicking on your site and hearing the advise that you have for those out there like myself who just need encouraging words at time, and seeing you travel the world is something I want to do, but not sure how to get started, can you give a few pointers
Would love a workout video from you! I'm studying abroad and my dorm is small. I'm planning to start working out, but would love to see other tips.
Ah! I freaked out when I saw my comment at the end of your video, I'm such a fan lol
I'm thankful for my students who sometimes get on my nerves and also bring me joy and laughter, my mom and life! ^_^
Korea seems so similar to Japan (where I live) You are so full of positivity and light. I'm thankful I found your channel. Bless!
charlycheer great taste in music. I've checked the majestic casual channel and fell in love!
Awwwww I really love this video! Love looks like peace and unity. Awesome!
this is beautiful ...big smiles over here!
I was just about to ask what workout video you were doing when you started saying how thankful you are for it :)
I really hope you get a video up about it soon it looks super effective :)
I'm behind on your videos again lol, i told myself the next video u upload i will watch, and woke up to this lol. I agree with the title, and basically what u presented in the video. I try to keep that phrase out of my mind whenever i see Korean ppl in the US, especially the older Koreans. And u know there's some "issues" with Koreans owning hair stores in the black community. I try to muster up the courage to say 안녕하세요, especially if it looks like the store owner is having a nice day. Maybe i could change their perspective (those who have a negative view) on black ppl, just by being nice, whether in Korean or English. But definitely speaking a little Korean, grabs their attention quicker. I did this 2x at two different hair stores and got positive feedback, from both. My sister did it once, and the lady try to offer my sister her lunch, kimchi lol
*****
Lol, i know what movie u are talking about. Yeah, i'm natural now as well (4 years and some months, almost 5), and now i rarely need to go, which sucks in a way because i could practice my Korean. It's okay your Korean doesn't have to be good, even saying hello in korean will make them smile and maybe start up a conversation, in English, but they appreciate that u are showing interest.
***** wow really?...cus i am cuurrently learning to speak fluent korean...so would the be like SUPER amazed and be more welcoming towards me? :0
ahmed shahab
Sure, try it out and see.
Not trying to be racist or anything, but many korean people usually hear about black people that are gangsters, or rappers, or other stuff in that general area, and those people are usually loud, and korean people dont like this, so thats why there is this stereotype about korean people not liking black people. This is not true for most korean people, but there will always be someone. My mom is korean and most of my family lives in South Korea, so I go every 4 or so years. Beware of creepy old men on the subway. Always talk in english if possible if you notice someone staring at you so they dont find out anything about you. Korea is a beautiful place, but be careful for high drunk people. Many people smoke. Beware.
So is Korea an okay place for an African American to visit. I really want to visit SK, but I'm afraid that I'll have a bad experience.
Its safe if you dont do touristy things like take lots of pictures, etc. If you do so, people will know you are a tourist, or visiting, not living in Korea. I would suggest learning the names and how to pronouce many different foods, phrases, etc. You might want to get a korean tutor IN KOREA so you can call on them if something happens if you dont know anybody in korea. If you are staying for a while, I would suggest downloading Kakao Talk, a free messaging app that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, uses. When spending money, keep in mind 1,000 won is about 1$.
Be safe!
+IamFabulousNini yes, Korea is a safe place for black, don't believe the racist bull!
+IamFabulousNini They won't kill, assault or arrest you for Black, let me say, the worst thing they'll do is stare at you.
lordblazer At least you're being honest.
Aww I'd been wondering if you met that lady again - I'm glad she was nice & that you had a good time. :)
just subscribed to your channel, it made me laugh the way she was rubbing/holding your hand everytime. aww
I'm thankful for understanding people in general. loving unconditionally but respectfully. being passionate
I am thankful for:
1. Life,
2. My family,
3. And being able to do and study things that I love
And of course for discovering you're videos really long time ago :D They have been life changing just all of the quotes like The world is my country and The earth is my playground. It is my favorite saying from you and I have been trying to making it my second life motto. My first Is to be positive in everything you do. Love you :D
Yes, you are a nice person. I can see that ^^
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings.
Okay, am I missing something? I watched the whole video and she never mentioned anything about race let alone anything about Koreans possibly hating black people. Is it in a different video? Is her point simply that a Korean Christian held her hand? Sincerely confused.
+BlackPiano She only used it in the title, as way to draw people in.
She said her kind heart attracts like minded kind people to her for which she is grateful.
odiesmum2012 I embrace LGBT even more after the Orlando tragedy.
Veggies! :-)
By the way.. the food looks DELiCiOUS! I'd love to see you do videos on how you prep/cook your meals and snacks even if it's super simple..
Ok, first video I have seen, subbed and I think I am in love!

Wow your beautiful! Just came across your channel while looking at other videos of interactions of african or black american people. i had no clue Korean people had any curiosity at all. I want to travel to korea and japan in my lifetime. This video is insightful.
Your Korean mom is so lovely. Yes, I said mom. Because that love from that lady is remarkable and very nice :) . When you see her again tell her thank you! She made me cry.
Great video. Congratulations! and one curiosity: which app did u use it for editing your video? Thank you. 😊
I love your videos and the background music! New sub from me
Your videos are always so awesome. I always learn something new. Thank-you.....One question. Why does that lady ke??ep holding your hand and rubbing it?
I really like these videos and i wanted to go to korea since i was 12 i dont know if i can wait anymore
I will love to go an Asian country like Korea. Your videos gave me a good idea of how it is in Korea. You even had a video about being Somali in Korea which got me excited about Korea.
Hi charly I really do think your genuine such a sweetheart very nice keep it up love
so your recording your dreams, looks like someone's having a spiritual awakening its nice to see how you've developed :)

Omg!! I love your channel!! ;)
you're a so bright woman with great attitude with beautiful smile☺
i noticed in the comments that many youtubers that live in Korea comment on each others videos and show each other support, its nice. you all should do a super vlog and come together and vlog with eachother. (smiling soul, you chonunmigooksaram, ect.)
thewalking dead addict i hope i don't offend anyone because the youtubers i named that live in korea are black/African american. i want to go/live there so i watch mostly aa youtubers so i can see their stories and transition into korean culture. eatyourkimchi started my fixation with korea lol.
Nice video !

Oh Yea, another vlog. I like all the videos but i love the vlogs. =o)

"veggies"
Ivoree S They're my favorite videos to film and edit! The more you watch and support, the more I will be motivated to continue to make! Thanks for watching and commenting!
charlycheer I'll keep watching as long as you keep filming. You do a wonderful job. =0)
Veggies!! And awesome video btw!! Loved it :)
❤❤❤❤❤❤ this!!!
Must be quite cold in that school. oh btw your students seem really sweet and very comfortable around you :D
was this click bait or not? i enjoyed the video and i subscribed but the title was misleading.
+फ़रलेशा जी Not, she said Koreans are the nicest people ever.
Hi Charly,
My question is, what do you do for hair, nails, and eyebrow maintenance there?
Hey Charly, my name is Mike. I really enjoy your blogs about living in korea. I would love to take my wife to Korea to visit, becaue it reminds me of New York kwhere im from. Please tell me where the best toursit , and places to shop thanks.
Hey Charley! I had this question for a really long time and hoped that you can answer it. I am from China and I immigrated to the US in second grade. My English is fluent. If I were to apply as an English teacher in Korea, do you think the application and interview process would be bias and disregard me since I do not have the typical "English-speaking" face( white/ black---not meant to be racist >.
It's so strange how that lady keeps rubbing your hand. Is that kind of thing normal/common in Korea? Oh and the food looks so yummy!
Yeah they do that. The older generation did that to me in Korea :) Its like a warm hug lol
Silver O When I first met her she was trying to warm my hands because they were really cold...I knew when she first touched them she was really trying to feel my skin...a lot of Koreans try to feel my skin because they think it will feel different. This day she said my hands were cold again but I know they weren't as cold as the first time I met her (that time they really were frozen)...so this time I think she was just trying to be kind and comforting. It was a bit awkward though haha...she held my hand for a really long time.
It's normal and I like it~
Every time when I'm in Korea my grandma, aunts and ajummas do it too and I'm Korean. :)
***** I love your response! So very true about the difference in cultures.
Silver O Yes... a lot of Korean still do not have gay concept. Walking with your girlfriends by holding hands is actually more normal than holding boyfriends hand. Especially when elders do that, that simply letting you know they care for you!
charlycheer
We have the same birthday but I'm a few years older :) Have a Happy Birthday!!! So glad to see you back! "veggies"
charly thanks for the video. How can i get the music thats playing around 3:16?
Wow how do you work out in such a small space? I don't think I could deal.
Beautiful!
This place looks nice, where is it exactly? What is it called? (The place with the dippin' dots :P)
that food looked so very good. I'm hungry now.😥
How does the school system work exactly? Do the students have a choice in which class they go to?
The hand rubbing is cultural. My mom has done that to me when I haven't seen her for awhile and were walking somewhere. She also does it to my brother in law who's black and she's trying to show him how much she cares about him. I've experienced this with mom/aunt types so I think it's more a way older women show affection. Btw I'm korean. I like your videos and wish you'd post stuff.
Hey I wanted to ask about the dieting in Korea? I'm a bit curious.
Thank you for clearing up my clouded mind about this i really love how korea and other asian contries are ams i reeeallly want to travel there super bad but i was always told they dont like any black ppl and this really showed me that they were wrong thank you
what workout video were you doing? the moves look familiar.
I'm thankful for just being alive in this day and age.
you're awesome really
hi, i can never get my tofu brown...... some tips PLEASE!!!! Thanks....
Hi Charly, I have a question. Is 'It's a beautiful day' your new tag phrase?? I'm generally curious because you say in almost all of your videos now.
JazzyJamable Yeah but some days I'm just not feeling it hahaha so I don't say it when I'm not feeling it haha
I'm in Korea currently. Any places you recommend??
이쁘네... 웃으니까 더매력적임 잘봤어요~~!
Hey charly how are you doing ? Hum I was wondering how long are you in Korea for ?
My best friend is Korean and I'm mixed (Jamaican & Puerto Rican )
So uh... The tittle was a bit misleading but it's okay. 😅
That food look sooooo good...
I love you so much! Haha, when you can please react to my video of me singing in Korean. ㄱㅅ ♡
The woman was so cute stroking your hand aaaawww 😭
can you show us your apartment & neighborhood?
What's the intro song for this video? Thank you!
you have a fun an exciting life, do you ever get home sick from the state, and how offer do you come home
I love ur channel the food that u made look vary good where mine lol
Thank you, Lee, for your comment. It is sad, but true about the "bad rap" (reputation) about black people in general as shown in movies and the media. However, not all White Americans are prejudice concerning Afro-Americans; there are many people with a good and understanding heart also.
Do you watch a workout video on CZcams? Can you please share the video with us?
In Thailand they treated me so well. And a close friend took me to where she is from. EVERYBODY S T A R R E D @ ME SO HARD !!!!!!
But she told me none of them have never seen any people of color @ all. I was so uncomfortable but I got over it by the third day. I had such a great time there.
New friends reunited after few weeks if not a little longer :). Happy early birthday or happy birthday if it's February 7th in South Korea. I am happy to announce well not even close to the end/ start of another semester yet, but as soon as the fall of 2015 rolls around I would be enrolling into a university so I can go towards a bachelors degree an even still go for an associate but seriously a bachelors degree which I would be getting closer to my goals/ dreams of assistant teaching aboard in Japan, China, South Korea or any were in the world if I don't go down the road for assistant teaching English than hopeful I will find employment in the graphic design field or if I do change my degree program than hopeful I will have a career after university, the problem is knowing what other programs I want to take in order to get a career. Once and hopeful once I get into a university that I will have great professors which kind of put me threw the ringer at a community college level which my 4.0 grade point average I had in 2010 drop to a 2.586 some time in 2012/ 2013 than the grade points went up to a 2.700 which was miracle that i passed my HTML5 and CSS3 which was 4 credit hour course in the fall semester of 2014. Any ways great video and happy early birthday for you. I wanted to stop in and saying I am still around and kind of giving you an update on myself which I am so excided for the fall of 2015 well if everything goes well for my semester and paying for a university which equals out an a little more than my current community college I am attending. I truly truly hope to meet you some day in South Korea if my calling calls me to assistant teach English in Japan with GEPIK or EPIK and of course QuRanger if he is still in South Korea by the time I get there and the EatYourKiminchi crew :).
