You Will Not Believe This Hair Salon Nightmare! | Natural Hair | Life in Korea | #25

  • So I went to a hair salon for the first time in 3 years only to realise by the end of the day that my hair wasn’t detangled which was what I went there for in the first place. I found myself disappointed and frustrated because I paid for a service ($30) that wasn't completed and I left the shop and was told it was done. I also paid $20 extra so $50 total for the oil treatment which I feel she was just trying to add on extra things to get more money out of me. After telling her that I came home to matted hair she refunded the $20 for the treatment because but that was all. Natural hair in Korea is not that difficult to care for if you do your hair yourself but if you go to a salon you will most likely find your hair getting pulled, tugged and ripped. Most Black/African Hair shops don’t understand the care natural hair needs. I’m warning you so you don’t have to go through it yourself! This is my own personal experience. Be sure to subscribe to find out the latest update on what happens next with my natural hair nightmare!

    That's why i do my hair myself. I will only go to a salon that caters to natural hair and know what they are doing. It's sad to say that, while other races can look at their hair as just hair and not an important part of their culture, black/African's ppl hair, is a HUGE part of our culture. Part of our culture that we were made to forget, so brainwashed to the point that we don't know how to care for it and didn't know that it was a big part of our culture. So, sad that many black/African women, didn't/don't know how to truly care for their natural hair, whether they have been natural their whole lives (which is a minority), or have had relaxers most of their life. I'm so glad that is changing with the natural hair movement. Even u have changed in how u care for your natural hair as well Charly, from your past videos, til now. PS: I've also seen that video little girl do her natural hair, it's lovely isn't it? (^-^)

    • @SontaLovely
      @SontaLovely Před 9 lety +2

      Exactly and from now on I wouldn't trust a stylist that wears a Justin Bieber wig on who probably has no hair or edges underneath. Your own hair should be an expression of your work/craft. It doesn't have to be long but look healthy and look as if you put time and effort in your hair as opposed to slapping a wig on. And yes I've seen that video before of the lil girl doing her hair. She is really talented because she has loads of thick, strong and long hair! It was cute! But I totally agree our hair is our pride and heritage.

      Lol i don't mind if u wear a wig or weave, as long as u know what u are doing with my head, than it's all good. But i'm glad more and more black women are wearing weaves that at least resemble our hair texture...well at least on youtube they are lol

    • @littlemsmae1228
      @littlemsmae1228 Před 9 lety +3

      Sonta Lovely I agree. The hairdresser seems like a sweet lady but I would not have trusted her with my natural hair after seeing her with that wig on. If it at least mimicked our natural hair or at the very least installed well I wouldn't care so much but if she cannot do her own hair well, what makes you think she can do your hair well? Like you said, her hair should be an expression of her craft.

    I'm a stylist who has natural hair and specializes in natural hair care! I actually became a stylist because I feel that we (naturals) should be able to go into a salon with confidence that we are in good hands. I've been a DIY natural for so many years and sometimes it's nice to sit back and let someone else mess with my hair for a change. Sadly, I'm the only natural hair stylist in my area! Lol. I still gotta do it myself.
    Anyway, she should really learn how to care for natural hair. Not just to help her business, but to help her grow as a stylist.

  • @Heygeli19
    @Heygeli19 Před 9 lety +12

    If you want to avoid it getting matted then you're going to have to detangle it regularly. Pretty much everyday. I would suggest warming water on the stove or in the oven and putting it in a spray bottom and soaking your hair section by section. Add conditioner too. (You could put the conditioner in the spray bottle). Put a towel around your neck and the floor if you're worried about getting water all over the place (Or do it in the tub). Twist or braid each section AS SOON AS you detangle it. Otherwise you run the risk of it getting tangled again. Then keep it in those braids or twists until you think you'll feel like detangling again. I definitely wouldn't suggest paying someone. You should learn to do it yourself, for your own benefit. It should be routine. And I can tell she was wearing a wig or weave so I question whether she's anymore familiar or concerned with the proper way to care for natural hair than you are.

    • @charlycheer
      @charlycheer  Před 9 lety

      Heygeli19 I just detangled and washed it 3 days ago :) Detangling once a week at the moment..I just need to be consistent. Thanks for the advice!

    • @Heygeli19
      @Heygeli19 Před 9 lety +3

      charlycheer Oh yeah once a week is a good start. I think half of it has to do with how often you detangle it and the other half has to do with the styles you wear in between. Also trimming the ends. My hair is less likely to get tangled when I don't have split ends...even though I'm not good about getting them cut regularly. Btw I enjoyed your video. You have such a cute personality!

  • @stephanieedwards9553
    @stephanieedwards9553 Před 9 lety +4

    Hey there Charly :) excuse me for sounding judgmental but as soon as I saw that African woman with that Mary J. Blige wig on I knew this wasn't going to end well. I'm sure she's the bomb at doing straight hair or installing a wig/weave and maybe she should just stick to doing that and not have scalped you out of your money for doing nothing to your hair. Personally I have not been to a salon since my big chop 3 years ago because I know not many salons do natural hair professionally. I hope you were able to de-mat your hair with not much breakage.
    I had a bad matting episode myself when I first started and I was able to de-mat by soaking it in EVCO and a good deep conditioner (Nature's Gate), let it sit under a plastic cap. Bought a deshedding tool from the pet section then got to work! I still had a full head of hair afterwards. Even after that I STILL don't go to the salon lol. I take better care of it now. I hope yours came back to life. Love your vids! Take care

    I wear my hair natural too but I finger detangle my hair or moisturize and oil the hair and ends gently combing it section by section twisting my hair into small braids every night using shea oil to unroll it in the morning.
    Keep your hair moisturized and oiled and it won't tangle as much.
    And wrap it up at night in a silk scarf this keeps it from drying out and becoming frizzy or tangled.
    And your hair is thick and lovely.

    Sorry about your experience...I have grown up with a hair salon phobia because my late mom never allowed people to touch or handle our hair as children. She would hire trusted plait-women or let the maid and sometimes my late grandma to do it...She even took a hairdo class so she could do it herself. Even when I was on my own and had a perm, I was always scared to get my hair done at a salon because of that facet of my upbringing. To this day, I just can't muster the courage to get my hair done by others, and now that I am natural, it's gotten worse, I just wouldn't trust anyone with my hair.

      MSE. Dzirasa Well when I have a kid I will do the same as your mother but practice on my kids head, and most salon people are bad. They hold no license and they think relaxers are the key to everything, they dont know how to manage their own hair.
      I'd say its best to wash and detangle your hair at home so when you get to the salon they wont rip your hair out or sneak relaxers in the conditioner,
      when using heat have them put some on or you can put it on at home.
      their yanking your hair still? tell them.
      they are using too many passes tell them to stop.
      have a design book before you go in, your definition of style or color may not be their definition.
      When your hair gets long be wary because like many other women on youtube they will mistreat it because of jealousy.
      etc... I cant remember more now.

    • @MSEDzirasa2015
      @MSEDzirasa2015 Před 9 lety

      crazymusicgrl You nailed it...It is rather a pity that people just wouldn't speak up when they go to hair salons...They become timid...the best way is to learn how to do your hair at home and also have the design book before a visit or else you may go home with half your hair, or with a different texture. smh

When I was transitioning I washed my hair in the sink and ended up with a bunch of mats in the top front of my hair and freaked out because it was much more than i wanted to have to cut (matted from root to ends) but I tried slathering on conditioner to detangle those parts and luckily it seriously worked and very easily!

I myself usually just use a shampoo that I currently love and I've been told that using different shampoos for you're hair all the time is bad. But I am going to try to change that and I also try to think how to change my hairstyle I usually just wear ponytail all the time, because it is the fastest and most comfortable style for me. Sorry about your experience at the hairdresers - I've unfortunately experienced that also with my natural hair, to the point where I just don't trust any hairdressers to do my hair anymore :S I hope she improves or you find a hairdresser thats good that you can visit now and then :)

Even though it's mainly people who are old fashioned'

    Hey charlycheer,
    Try applying coconut oil to your dry hair, then saturate it with a conditioner that has good slippage. This works well for me and my girls.. Check out naptural85 she has a tutorial on it.. Plus it really fast. This should cut your 😤😖detangling time down by several hours.. 😄

    • @charlycheer
      @charlycheer  Před 9 lety

      Julie Lamour Thanks for the tips! I detangled my hair already. I watch naptural as well but more for her daily vlogs. I don't like coconut in my hair because it actually makes my hair dry. I prefer olive oil. :) Thanks for watching!

    I'm late to the game with this video and no one below is saying anything....But why not try washing your hair once a week or once a month and use conditioner to help detangle with a brush or comb and then just use water every so often to help in the detangling two or three times a week? I have natural hair as well.

    The funny thing, 10 years ago I went to west Africa to get my natural hair styled at a salon the women there were looking at my hair like they had never seen Natural hair before- I am glad hair care is improving with the internet you have to let her know that she did not do a good job and send her some info so she does not "jack" anyone else's hair up- a good rule of thumb is to look at the hair dressers hair if its not healthy then don't risk it! You should just get your side hustle on and do "natural hair on the side"
    are there no Korean own natural hair salons? Korean's here in the US own all the beauty supplies so I would think they should know how to do some hair?

    my mom has that whole cutting hair according to the moon thing....... it makes no sens to me cause it made no difference to my hair length (which never grows past my shoulders) my moms hair though grows very fast and long , hers is till her butt while mine doesn't go past my shoulders and once it reaches my shoulders it breaks .... this has been so all my life and has me depressed.

    • @MyPandiiKisses
      @MyPandiiKisses Před 8 lety

      My hair was the exact same way. Never grew past my shoulders even though I've never put any chemicals on it. I even had some pretty bad heat damage because I was always straightening it. I figured out that my hair doesn't like being manipulated so I started protective styling a couple of years ago and now it's bra strap length and extremely thick. Try protective styling and keeping it moisturized.

    • @ninim7008

      Thanks for your replay, but sadly i have been protective styling it and even that breaks my hair after a while. I literally cant do anything with my hair or put anything in it that will not cause it to break, other than that i have skin problems that resulted in me developing psoriasis of the scalp (dr said its a mild version but its horrible) no matter what i put in my hair to moisturize it, it all dries up after a while or drips down to my face causing me to break out. ive been trying so many things to grow my hair and fix the scalp ... its been more than 15 years now TT_TT ive even went tot he hospital and they couldn't help me
