I wish that in high school this is how they did some of our tests when learning a different language. You're very patient with the kids and aren't afraid to show them with hand motions etc. I hated learning a different language at school because the teachers don't seem to understand like you do here, so well done and keep up the good work Kimmy :)

They all did a wonderful job! English is not an easy language to learn so I commend them for their efforts. I'm learning Korean at the moment and it's been difficult, but very rewarding. I hope they feel the same about their efforts.
It really depends on what your native language is, when it comes to learning english. I am born and raised in Sweden and english is pretty much everywere, so it was a REALLY easy for me to learn. Spanish on the other hand, not so much. But I can speak 3 different languages fluently, so I don't complain.

You are right. Korean is an isolated language. Learning English is very difficult for most Korean adults. But Koreans who are under 10 years old, they are able to speak English without big accents.
+Katie i'm always shocked europeans know how to speak 3 different languages. their native tongue english and a 3rd european language. like an german would know how to speak german english and then french or something's it's crazy.

I love how patient you are with your students, and how you don't pressure them to quickly answer a question. By helping them using hand gestures, it's a great visual tool to help them retrive the answers in their memory.

Nice job teaching the children. The boys appear to be very nervous and the girls are excellent with their language skills. The girls also appear to be very confident where the boys are somewhat awkward and it appears as though they try extremely hard.

although I feel like she should have higher expectations for her students because they didnt really use complete sentences. in my french class we were expected to speak in complete sentences, but yeaaa
they did so well that crazy. english is one of the hardest languages to learn and they did so well

Haruna Kotogawa i said ONE, and actually it is, with all the grammar rules, as well as all the different syllables and sounds certain letter combinations make. There are harder ones, but english is amongst them.
+Isis Sarah There is also the fact that there are many accents and dialects of English, as well as slang, and non-native speakers may have trouble understanding those.
Thank you for sharing this video and for your students participation. I'm a 62 year old studying Korean but age doesn't matter. I can fully empathize with these middle and high school students and the awkwardness of struggling to learning a foreign language. Keep up the good work.

한국어 would be the correct way to say Korean (as in language). Although 한국말 would describe something similar but something more exclusive to speech.
(South) Korea is just 한국 not 한극 so with an 우 instead of an 으 :) I hope I wasn't obnoxious, just trying to help! I started studying about a year ago and if I look back at my work then I made mistakes I wouldn't dare make now but they're obviously necessary in order to grow!
This reminds me of my french speaking tests in high school. Especially the students sort of groaning and laughing nervously when they couldn't find the words - that's exactly how I was, and it's interesting to watch this in my language (I now sort of understand how I sounded to my teacher). You actually remind me of my old teacher, and she was a great teacher who really knew the language and also didn't make students feel stupid for making mistakes, so that's a compliment.

+Yes Honey Yes I aced the writing and listening parts of my French exam but I only got a C in my speaking test...we never got asked questions though....weeks before we had to write an essay written entirely in French and then learn it by heart and recite it in the test....damn that was hard!

I wish I could speak another language fluently. My friend's husband is from Cameroon and speaks to their baby son in French while my friend speaks to him in English...I can't wait until he starts talking xxx
same I had to do a presentation for my university class, I took a full year and then one year in 8th grade. I can't speak well, but I can understand reading, and speaking when being talked slowly to. writing on the other hand, c'est difficile.

I'm a graduate English teacher but I can't teach English in Korea (a forgotten dream :( ) because I'm not from a native speaking country.... some friends tell me that I could teach Spanish but I have no idea of how easy (and being honest profitable in terms of having a decent life haha) that could be.... I'm getting updated with your fantastic videos! oh! btw, your first time testing oral skills? wow, very well done! I mean, teaching English to Latin people is not difficult because grammar rules don't vary a lot, but in countries like Korea their writing structures are something completely different. For example teaching how to say the date correctly I always tell them "remember guys words on the left (day and month), numbers on the right (number of the day and year)" because they always try to translate literally :D so WAY TO GO YOUNG LADY! You did produce an impact with your lessons!

That's unfortunate that you aren't able to teach in Korea, they are a bit demanding with their requirements for teaching English but there are several options in other countries! The thing about most Korean students is that they are very shy about speaking, so getting them to talk at all is like pulling teeth! I actually am looking into teaching English in a Spanish speaking country after my time in Korea. Teaching definitely is not the highest paying job, but it's probably the most rewarding job I've ever had just because these kids really make (and sometimes break) my day! Ah, te comprendo muy bien. Yo llevo viviendo un tiempo en el Reino Unido, pero nací en Colombia, por lo que pese a tener un inglés prácticamente nativo (a veces siento incluso que es un poco mejor que mi español xD), no puedo enseñar inglés en Corea, pese a ser uno de mis sueños... :(

I would suggest assigning groups, and in each group assign a group leader who can speak and understand english the most. Choose a topic everyday (if you can) and have them take turns talking (only in English or if needed using hand gestures) for about five minutes or so. If they all become good enough you can try a socratic seminar. The girls seemed to grasp the language better than the boys.
+Yvette Sanchez The girls seem to be a bit more studious than the boys most of the time. Unfortunately for these speaking tests, I had to test each student individually because the school requested for it to be done this way. But I appreciate the suggestions! Could try it for a group speaking activity!
+Kimmyonaquest Of course! Must be pretty nerve wracking for students, I'm kind of glad my language classes never had one (despite me being fluent). I know my language teacher used to put on a short video (in spanish) and later we would keep logs on different aspects of the video. I feel as though any student fears being incorrect or making mistakes but it's apart of the process and I think that's something to remind them off. I wanted to become a teacher and educate around the world but the medical field is calling my name! Good luck~

I really wish my english teachers were like you... you make them learn usefull things ! I remember back in middle and high school, all we learned was how to make text or pictures analysis... like OK we could do a whole description of a Pablo Picasso's painting (describing what the painter wanted to depict) but we couldn't even say "do you have a fork ?" or things as simple as that (like I went to USA and I wanted to cook for my foster family and I couldn't even say which ingredients I needed because I was seriously missing some vocabulary...)
anyway good work, I hope your students will progress ;)

You are truly a wonderful teacher. I homeschool my two youngest sons and one of them has a learning difficulty which would have seen him fall through the cracks in the public school system, here in Australia. I had to learn very fast how to be patient.
You have inspired me to aim higher in my approach.

I wanna tell you how much of a help this has been to me. I plan to do this later on and I really like this way of teaching. I have had several foreign language teachers who did me /no/ good whatsoever and I am so glad to see someone patient with students and willing to help them out just a little with hand motions and also try to reassure them not to be too nervous. This is really great to see. I am going to be doing a teaching practicum in China in a few years and I also have been considering Korea. It's nice to see how your testing worked. Thank you for making this video! This video helped me understand the students' frustration when trying to express themselves in English. It is indeed hard to talk to someone using a second language, but you motivated them. Being patient and understanding are good qualities that a teacher should have; someone that really cares for them. I know I am sooo late watching this video, but I hope to see more in the future! I actually like this way of teaching, it gives a way to actually learn and communicate as a first hand experience. In fact this is how my teacher would keep us going when it comes to speaking to each other in another language. I'm glad you have shown us a video of how students could learn, this will give me a better view of my future endeavors as a student who moves to be a teacher as well!!!!!

Wow, they did very well. It seems some students have troubles sounding out sounds like CH, TH, SH, SA, CA. It's common.
I noticed that the female student is wearing red lipstick. Didn't realize that they are permitted to wear make up in South Korean high schools.

Are there not a lot of high schools that allow people to wear makeup? In The USA, you can where it wherever and whenever.
in my school ,we can't wear it . but i don't know about korea and the other countries

I teach in japan...this video made me smile... i have the same pronunciation issue with my students - TH is difficult... breath is difficult...but its more difficult to not laugh...
as for your students... for some of the students either they needed more practice time with you (like a review) or they needed to study more... for some of them it seemed that they struggled to understand the questions...some of the topics for middle school seemed a little tough...
Where I teach we usually don't use free speaking for middle school because it's too much pressure... so we try to do either reading out loud, memorising some text, or group presentation
High school is when we push for individual speaking...such as show and tell, making a speak, and debates...
We also tend to have one topic with a series of questions to keep it fair for all the students (some topics are harder than others...in a speaking test it shouldnt be testing their knowledge on a topic, but testing their ability to communicate and pronunciate etc ... for example, one time we did about describing appearances - students got to pick from a choice of 4 cards - each card had a TV characters - students had to describe them... that way it was the same topic, just a different character.)
i loved seeing them try their best! you're a great teacher... learning new languages is not easy so i relate because i was never good at these in my french class in hs
Good job!! You're doing good for the student. Especially when you start the test, you keep gave them eye contact. It's a good way for communication. I am sure that's why they are trying to say something even they are not very fluent speaking English.

And I think, you can also add some talking subject which can make the student get attention. For example, you can ask them about their favorite TV star like a Joongki-Song, Hyegyo-Song..etc
Wow, you've never taught before? You seem like a natural! You have the authoritative aura of a teacher but at the same time, a very understanding attitude.
In the shoes of the students, I think I'd appreciate personal feedback (if you aren't already swamped with other stuff!). Being in my French class in high school, I was always nervous for these things but I always did so well because I got feedback, as well as lots and lots of practice.
Other things that maximized my speaking skills were:
1) My textbook -- It provided *countless* phrases to similar questions you asked. COUNTLESS!
2) *Small skits* -- I only was able to speak French because of this. My teacher understood that learning a foreign language comes best with immersion. After we completed a chapter of French (i.e.,learning ALL the phrases, ALL the grammar), my teacher always assigned a small skit that corresponded with the theme of the chapter (e.g., chores, shopping, friends). This tested for a) writing skills, b) grammar skills, c) speaking skills, and d) "attitude" skills (like you said, intonation, tone). We wrote our script in class, she corrected it. After we realized our mistakes, we fixed them, and started practicing and memorizing. The more we practiced, the more fluent we sounded. We soon connected the words we were saying to their appropriate contexts and tones. Our French class was the best foreign language class on campus! The skits were assigned in groups of 2-3. Line amounts depended on how many people there were in a group and the grade we were in. As I moved from freshmen to senior year, line counts increased dramatically, but so did my foreign language skills. It was so so helpful to my trip to France senior year!

Hi, Kimmy... Your video reminds me with my english class a year ago, now I missed to teach again hahahaha... Your student were doing a great job, congratulation. Being a language teacher isn't easy, when I used to be like that I was trying hard to find the appropriate material and learn with the senior how to handle the kids and also try to learn how students not bored with it... but it was so tired but yet interesting because sometimes the students always do something wether it's funny or silly or make me proud.
So Kimmy, keep your spirit up and don't give up, that will be your best experience and unforgetable moment...

I was literally on the edge of my seat watching this. There was 0 Korean so I kind of empathized with the students. I remember having to take my French and Japanese exams and feeling so overwhelmed despite studying rigorously. I second guessed myself every time the teacher asked me the question twice despite knowing I had answered correctly the first time. The only difference was that all of my teachers were either Bi or Multi-lingual so they would speak in English if it wasn't directly regarding the exam, lots of respect for people learning other languages (whether they do it by choice or not lol)

They are so cute and you seem like a great teacher. I love your way of testing. I think most of them knew the answers (since they answered as soon as you showed them signs) but were scared. Which can be because of lack of experience and confidence.
English is not my native language, so here are some of the ways i was thought
We were given "a set of conversation", study it and present it orally the next class.
We were not allowed to talk in our native language in the school(not just the class, small school around 700 students in total)
For the younger ones, each student was given 5 cards and every time one of them don't use English, a card gets taken away. At the end the student with most number of cards gets a reward.
Practice is the best way to learn a language.
If you are my teacher in my foreign lang class, I would never get nervous in expressing my thoughts however clumsy and messy it could get. You are so patient with your students.

Hi! As someone who speak french and learned English at school, that's how we were tested too! Another thing that can make tests like this less stressful is group talk. Teams of 4-5 people talking together in English while the teacher is listening, it does the same job but it's less stressful (at least it was for me). Personally what made me learn English practically perfectly was to write a lot (we had to write for 15 minutes on each of my English classes it was awesome). Also, singing English songs and watching movies helps, but I don't know if you can actually watch movies with students everywhere in the world..so everything I said might not even be considered "Teaching". I don't know if it's the same everywhere...👍 It was a really interesting video(:

I like the way you test the kids. having an interview set up test will really improve their ability to speak English and the range of their vocabulary drastically. it will also encourage them to speak English to one another and fix problems like pronunciation right away. hope my grammar is right! hahahahah 😂😂😂😂😂
Practice is no.1 tip to learn any language and also speak , just speak no ones gonna tell you this is wrong or this is right ..

Ah the memories of college Spanish speaking tests. I remember trying to explain what I did at a concession stand - perro caliente, cotton azucar, pop maize and etc.
I really like your video and I think you did great! I'm not a teacher, but I'm passionate about teaching and want to become one. I enjoy it way too much when I get the chance to help out a fellow student _really_ get it that a couple of times I even caught myself offering my classmates things like "do you wanna understand _______? it's definitelly gonna be on the exam" and instead rereading things myself I'd bait them into teaching them something. :D I think you really did great here! Some kids were only shy and some hadn't learned every question (or at least they forgot) and I think your attitude was splendid. :)

But I am pretty sure this English speaking test will help Korean students to improve their English A lot, especially, speaking of course. Wish a lot of Korean students could speak English not only reading.

@Kimmyonaquest: I am an ESL tutor for Korean students in Semarang, Indonesia. I struggle to eliminate the influences of local language (javanese) to their pronunciation. I enjoy it so much. Hope that we can be in contact to exchange some knowledge of teaching. ^^

This was so high school and college French test. always funny but great!!!
For myKorean language assessment, when I don't understand the question or want a new question then I must ask for it myself. We have different styles of speaking assessment a. conversation with a partner for 2 mins (the teacher then ask us 3 questions out of 20 possible Qs) b. Presentation style (2 mins) c. like the one you're doing with picking topics.

Those precious beans omg. So cute. Lol. I think you did a good job with the speaking. I am studying to be an English teach as well in terms of ESL to teach in other countries. I think the technique you used with the students pronunciation is good. I help Korean students speak English (I am Korean as well) and the way you helped them with the pronunciation is a technique I use as well, I was taught that technique by an ESL teacher and it seems to work really well ^_^ lol

we call these tests orals in India cause they test our vocabulary and we have to talk in front of the whole class so its kinda nerve wracking xD but our topics are more debate based like ' is capital punishment better than life imprisonment ' or something like that! but great job on the videos! keep up the good work :')

I'm only in middle school, but for future speaking tests (I understand you had to assess them individually) you should try having them test in partners to feel more comfortable. Also do you have them learn songs to help with pronunciation and having a more natural accent? My Spanish teacher assigns us a Spanish pop song every 9 weeks for us to learn and for the last 5 minutes of class every day we listen and sing along to it, then after about a couple weeks the class sings it as a competition, and the class who is the best at singing it gets extra credit ^_^ Also I admire your patience with the students; you seem like not only a nice person but also a great teacher.
