The passenger car with the weird window arrangement is a sleeper car
interior is even more interesting
The car may be patterned after the “Brook” series duplex sleepers used by the Pennsylvania RR - 5 bedrooms and 12 roomettes- the roomettes were staggered one over another, thus the two levels of windows.
Although not a fan of plastic couplers, an easy way to replace the “horn hook” couplers on these cars is to use McHenry couplers made for Rivarrosi passenger cars - just pull out the existing coupler & snap in the McHenry. Be sure to check the truck style & suggest using ones with knuckle springs.😊

Nice collection of trains. You will get them going for sure. No worries. Just take your time and enjoy.
Looks like the secret of having a good time at a train show is volume buying to get the discounts!.😀
I've also discovered if you are friendly to the seller they are more likely to knock off a few dollars.
Charlie says don't take sweeties from strangers or buy trains from Woodstock!! Only from the the kitchener train show!! Lol !take care.
Beautiful haul!!!! I love the Atlas SD35 [small fan between the big fans and no flared radiators] . The AHM cars are fantastic!! They should look good behind your Pa1s!!! The offset windows make it a duplex sleeper [actually a PRR car]. Congrats on your new acquisitions. Enjoy!!.
Nice haul at the train show. Sure you will get everything running correctly. Thanks for sharing.
Working through them today. Got one fixed.
we often learn more of what NOT to do than of what TO do... thanks again for sharing.
FYI, horn hooks, unless you are getting uncoupling tracks, go ahead and cut those trip pins, they will catch, especially on long shank ones
Nice haul!
Nice haul part 2! The AHM cars are Rivorassi and need a bit of weight added in-between the truck pins inside the car. You can always power the third dummy unit to help pull the passenger consist. Another issues with the AHM/Rivorassi/IHC passenger cars are the trucks and wheels. They really need heavy metal wheels and axles. An option for shorter passenger cars is to find some Athearn Blue Box cars they are a shorter car by almost 1" (25mm). One thing to find is the CV for the decoder reset, sometimes that's all that's needed to bring it back to life.
Thanks for the help. I have now sorted the Chessie issue.
looking like track refurb dave nice haul
Future plans Peter, future plans.
Scott a couple of things. That second row of windows on top is probably because it is a double decker with seating on 2 levels. Also as I commented on Friday night I have the same CPRail locomotive that you do and I have nothing but 18" radius track on my layout. The locomotive runs just fine. So you should be OK. Nice haul by the way. Love those train shows. Get good deals all the time. I might have to modify some but still far cheaper than buying new.
I had the opportunity at the show to buy a new DCC loco, but just can't justify the price when I can get so many used models for the same money.
St. Louis Southwestern Railway (SSW). Nicknamed "The Cotton Belt Route". Later absorbed into Southern Pacific. Should have "SSW" on the nose.
Thanks for the education.
Those AHM coaches look like they've never been used. Nice catch.
... the squeak from the UP 'B' is prototypical ... lol realistic
The cotton belt unit is a old school atlas low geared
I think another idea for the AHM trucks is to modify the location of the pivot pin. Moving it closer to end of the cars will reduce the front and rear overhang, but will increase the middle of the cars overhang. So it might still crash into things lol. Good luck with them. I have a 10 car passenger consist of Walters Great Northern Empire Builder and I can get them to run on the Kato Unit rack in HO at the I think it's just over 18" radius. The Athearn Blue Box passenger cars are a bit heavier then the AHM cars and run on the 18" curves easier. Again good luck. Hope you will be able to make your next layout using Nickel Silver track and get some flexi track as well.
This is a great haul. The two levels of windows on that passenger car are bunk-beds in a sleeper. One set of bunks on top, and one on the bottom. Back when we still had these running in Canada, I would often take the sleeper this way, as it was way cheaper than a full roomette (I was a student, and didn't have much cash for travel). I don't know if they still use these on any of the VIA lines, but they might...I figured most things have been converted to roomettes and suites by now.
I used to love sleeper cars when we travelled to Italy and France.
VIA still has the dorm sleepers on The Canadian, a lower price ticket than a roomette or bedroom.
I have a brand new Cotton Belt Engine never out of the box. Nice looking engines, That CP unit is awesome and the CN Unit.
The Union Pacific passenger cars are a great addition to the layout. Some of the cars are the Mail car- Railway Postal Office (RPO), the car with glass dome - Vista dome or "Dome car", the car with multilevel windows - Sleeper car, and the tail car is an Observation car. As far as a dining car, they will usually have a small door on one side in the middle or towards on end of the car. This door is for loading supplies into the car. Also, this car usually doesn't have any vestibule doors for entering or exiting the car. Another tidbit of information on the dome car would be that some railroads had a version of the dome glass that went the whole length of the car.
My pick out of the bunch would be the Chessie (B&O) SD35. I personally have a couple of these units, and I like the detail and performance. Also, for reference, the exhaust stack (single stack) for turbocharged EMD locomotives faces towards the cab while the other locomotive manufactures have it towards the radiator.
Overall, it looks like you had a great score at the train show.
Great information as usual, thanks.
Take those AHM passenger cars and put sticky weights over the trucks. It will help. The coupler on the truck should allow 18r curve operation. AHM and Rivarossi cars are NOT something you want. ConCor works much better.
I just got a box of sticky weights delivered. I have some con-cor passenger cars, and I don't think they are any better to be honest.
Try the Walthers, it WILL change your mind. They can be lighted with their own conversion lighting accessory. @@ScottRails
@@ScottRailsthey aren't, the only really good passenger cars are the Weather's (for weight, detail) and Rapido (for detail, not as heavy as Walters). When you have uneven track the lighter cars are more likely to derail.
Yeah. That's quite a long train 😅
I'm sure you'll get everything running.
Enjoy the challenge.
Happy Modelling
Awesome UP set! Those are riverossi Passenger cars and arguably very very good passenger rolling stock. I have a Canadian National Heavy passenger train for my Mehano Mountain Type 4-8-2 bullet nose and my CN Hudson 4-6-4. Makes a gorgeous train and I bought them with metal wheels at 20 bucks CAD a pop (5 of them). I'm also UP fan, I actually have an Athearn Veranda Turbine and I am in the midst of getting running DCC.
Glad you picked up a Cotton Belt to go with your SP locos, they usually go hand in hand. The CN dash 9 was really hot too. Gratz on the big haul!
wow, I now have three of those grey/red locos in my fleet, pretty cool.
I have put the flat 8 pin decoders backwards. Doesn't hurt anything, just some functions are backwards.
I got to the bottom of that issue, will update soon.
That cprail unit is a gp38-2
I love chessie system too. I went to Tennessee to see my family and my hotel room number photo had a chessie on it
I had the same problem with similar cars catching on a bridge where the track curve was a bit sharp heading on to the bridge. Some judicious trimming at the approach solved the issue.
First visit of the year Dave 👍 Hope all good for you and all yours ! Looks like you are really getting into the railroading ! Gotta go see what's happening on the other channel now !
Once again, VERY NICE haul. I have the same CN Dash 9 but with a different road number. The UP 1601-B unit you hooked up to the F7A and the box car is an Alco FB-1. The roof fan and the door give it away! Don't get stressed out with the 18"R track. Nothing wrong, but there are limitations. Whatever you do, don't give model railroading up for golf! 😄😄
hahaha, no, golf will never me part of my story.
Power the other UP PA1. Put the DCC sound unit in the PB.
The Chessie silver atlas, the plug is just a blank. It should run on DC with the plug in. At least that's what my c420 silver atlas did until I put a decoder in it.
Hello Dave wow another great haul nice union pacific coaches and cars,
Nice haul. I have faith that you will get it all working and running nice
I’ve never been to a train show
Where are you in the world?
@@ScottRails Wisconsin, I just got back into model railroading
On the Chessie it's more of an uncommon loco. It's a SD-35. It's very similar to a GP-35, but it has 3 axle trucks/bogies compared to the standard 2 axle trucks/bogies. I'm wondering if it's DCC chip is just programmed to a different number. It looks like a NCE decoder, Reset code for them should be CV30 to 2. But you can try CV8 to 8.
Also on the PA/PB1's if you have a powered PB1 that won't pull as big of train, you might be able to switch the shells out. Depending on if they're built by the same manufacture. The trucks/bogies and fuel tank might not be the proper color, but possibly be able to repaint them or switch them out. Don't know if they pull off like the Athearn or not. Might be able to even swap a PB body for a PA body.
I'm loving this sd35, now that I know what it is, lol. Need MORE!
Nice haul Dave, I do love my Atlas locos, they run superb. The UP train is a peach, stunning looking in the bright livery. Hope you get the DCC chip sorted.
If planing of rebuilding track layout, might want to look at 22" radius (R3 for Hornby fans) with no5 switches to prevent issues with long stock
Thanks Arejay.
Yes, the longer switches are a great idea. I will be very careful with my next layout.
May need speed adjustments on steps
for good rolling cars you might want to look at a truck tuner from micromark, it designed to make wheels run smoother from what I have heard. I am going to try on some of mine.
Also a little lube, and do a hill check
I have one and they do make a difference, especially on less-than-quality plastic trucks. Also, swap out for metal wheels--another big improvement.
@@jpkarenko6952 nice to know
What a great score.... it looks like the new track is coming sooner than later.... with the powered B unit can you just swap the body cover over from one to another hoping that they are the same manufacturer.... I hate those horn hook couplers also... I have several pieces of rolling stock with them on and I plan to change them over... So a lube and check over of all the stuff you purchased and you should have a nice new assortment of Loco's. It is also very amazing to me, the different colour variations of the same colour when shown like this for the same rolling stock that should be exactly the same colour.... it is crazy that different companies can't get the same colours when making these things........
Yeah, for the colour, I don't even think they look at any historic pics, just grab the closest tin of colour in the factory.
The B&O 7405 is a SD35. Good Runner, I have like 15 or so of those
Thanks for that. I had not seen an sd35 till this one.
The dynamic brake blister goes on exhaust stack forward.
Thanks.
So many things to tell you, but it seems my Model Railroading brothers have taken care of that. The Alco Fb unit as pointed out not to be an EMD F unit. By the looks of the bottom may have been a very old rubber band drive unit from the time of the dinosaurs. Only got a quick look though. You should be able to take the truck frames off the Alco PA's and switch between the B & O and the UP. Save you from painting. Track work always a pain. I wish we had more train shows around my area. Lots of work ahead for you. That's what keeps you happy !
Yes, I'm sure I can swap over the chrome truck sides without too much bother, thanks.
Even at $25 or $30 each for the UP Passengers would have been a good. Great score, Dave. Thanks for sharing!
although at the price, I like to have interiors
After a couple of laps of the show, I came back to that vendor and they had another box of UP coaches which were even cheaper. Oh well, let someone else take the win.
@@ScottRails should keep an eye for some spektrum UP coaches, they have interior and lights, Got some some for 25-30
The vendor was swamped with people trying to snag deals. Massive amount of goodies, I got caught up in the panic buying. It was like black Monday, hahaha.
@@ScottRails I had that when i was at one train show, when the guy gave me take pricing, filled up 2 banker boxes
Some great buys there. If they need a fettling and service it just makes them a bit more personal is the way I look at it. Very envious of the union Pacific beasty. . . . 😭😭😭 😁👍
Yeah, I'm pretty pleased with that whole setup. Now I just need a massive track for it to run on, hahaha.
@@ScottRails managed to grab a nice lot off eBay to compliment the u-28-c. . . All athearn. 12.x 50' . A union caboose. 3 Burlington carriages and 2 Santa fe observation carriages for £67. . And an old bachmann f3 in Burlington for £19. . . Still planning my layout. Have a rough idea what I want. . Need a bigger house though 🤔
I don't a bigger house, I just need less people living in it, lol
AHM was regarded as pretty decent stuff back in the day, so should be OK. The car with the odd window pattern is a double deck coach.
Thanks. I've been told it's a sleeper, like bunk beds for poor students, lol.
On the CP rail, check the fuel tank, it looks like it’s dragging on the track. Give it a good push up.
WOW!!!, well spotted! I just checked and you are correct, thank you sir.
Glad I could help. I only know this because it happened to me. I spent a good deal of time trying to figure out what was wrong with my elevated curve track work, before I realized the fuel tank was sagging because the tape was not holding. 😊
Here in the western US, I have never seen Union Pacific passenger cars, only freighters. I guess AMTRAK took on the passenger hauling role?
Interesting. Do you think they never actually existed?
I don't know for sure. May take some research 🤔
Amazing haul over the two videos, Dave, especially the two Canadian locos. Great lookers. It is a shame the UP colors vary so drastically from one company to another. Loved the UP passenger rake in this video, but they obviously have issues on the bridge.
I did eventually get the whole thing to go round the track, but it looks, ummm, what's the word.., Crap!, lol.
Atlas and Athearn of any age are very good, solid runners. So are the Proto1000/2000 from LifeLike and Walthers. They are my top 3 in no particular order. (Note: The only issue I ever had with any of them has been split gears, but that was an industry-wide problem and easily fixed, especially for someone with your skills.)
That was really cool the way you had to add power (B unit) to get up the hill, just like the real thing!
Ironically, the only reason I needed extra power, was because it was hauling a B unit with no power, hahaha.
Your CP GP38 migjt have cracked axel gears.
Possibly. I have spare gears on the way.
What oil and grease do you find work the best in loco repairs?
I'm trying labelle oil and gel grease at the moment. Time will tell if I still like them.
So how big of a radius do you need in the curves for coaches of that length?
There's no rule, but I think the wider, the more realistic it will look, and obviously the better they will run. I will be using flex track on my next layout, so I don't have a number, if that's what you mean.
I'm sure Arejay will appear shortly with the exact requirements, lol.
Technically they will run on 18” but with a lot of overhang and swing out if you are using truck based couplers. But they will look and perform much better on at least 22” or 24” curves.
I'll bet the 7405 is address 3
It wasn't, but not to worry, I have it sorted now.
Hi Dave , don't understand why your Union Pacific can't pull those lovely carriages, we use to run 8 carriages with only one loco on our european layout? Have a good one mate
Not sure what length your cars are, but the AHM/Rivorassi/IHC cars represent an 85 foot car. The Athearn Blue Box PA1 is a good loco, but may not be heavy enough without the added weights added in the late 90's 00's. Going with multiple powered units is a great idea, spreading the tractive force over more contact area works😊.
I'm sure it would pull the coaches, but not the b unit and dummy a unit, they are pretty heavy.
@@ScottRails 👍
Train Conductor on the other side from the engineer
If you are running Transition area diesel locos 1930's to early 1950's you had an Engineer in the cab, some times Firemen(holed over from steam) or brakeman in cab, on freight you would have brakeman and or conductor in caboose. For Passenger you could have 2 Engineers in cab and Brakman in the Dormitory car. Conductor would be in fancy uniform in the passenger cars with the passenger service crew.
In modern locos it is down to just the Engineer, and Conductor in the cab.
Is that Selfie man riding the Boxcar, Dave?
No, that's Hobo Henry.
looks like it
