I had to save this video to my Model Railroading list. This is a great find on an upgrade motor for these old Mehano locomotives with three pole motors to a better five pole motor. This may give life to these old engines for a budget price. Great video, and I look forward to seeing how the handrails are done in the future.
Dave you should have been a surgeon!!!! Hey here is a tip don't cook bacon naked.just kidding when I do a motor change I put a little baking soda on motor shaft then put a drop of crazy glue and push on quickley that way they never slip.
Well done 👍🏻
Very good idea, using these little motors! A pretty strong improvement already, so quiet!
hi Scott thx for the video.😊😊👍👍
Great and easy job Scott another brilliant video, I have ordered quite a bit of stuff from Ali Express after watching your videos, keep up the great work Thank You
Thanks bud. I was not expecting much from these motors, but there you go.
that runs awesome now dave good call bud
Nice rebuild. Thanks for sharing the process. I have some old BB engines that may be in need of new motors. Will have to keep this in mind.
Not sure if these motors will work in the athearn blue boxes. They are quite a bit smaller. But I will try one soon.
I do this with a lot of my cheapo OO and HO models - often using 24 volt motors for shunters/switcher - this video is important as modellers can often get astonishing performance improvement with inexpensive motors from China.
Well done!. This video reminds me. I need to find me some of those "wish bone" motor mounting clips. I have two Rs-2's to fix as is,lol.
I was looking for really good motors at a affordable price. Thank you for showing us.
The motor swap worked well. I have an old AHM FP9 I want to put a decoder in, but I'm told it has a tree pole motor in it. I wonder if it's the same design. Guess I shall pop the hood and see.
Nice video. Motor swap was pretty seamless. I've got some old stuff I'm going to take another look at now. BTW, running road switchers with either end forward can be correct. In the early diesel era, enginemen who were used to the crew protection afforded by the long boiler of a steam locomotive demanded that their new RS2's and GP7's be run long hood forward. Eventually, this changed in favor of running short hood forward for better visibility.
I have about 20 locos with this style of motor, so now I'm keen to see if I can love them again, lol.
Some railroad ran long hood forward, some short hood forward. EL long hood forward
Cheap and cheerful !!!
The long hood was considered forward (F). If you look at photos of these you can see a "F" on the long end sill. When these were rebuilt they lowered the short hood and that became the front. These units were extended Alco S switchers with a boiler added in the short end for steam heat (or AC for the Milwaukee Road and Sante Fe) so they could haul freight and passengers. In the switchers, the long end was the front. Cheers!
Awesome info, thanks.
Did you forget the weight in the fuel tank? Not bad and dirt cheap
I order a load of cheap stuff for my trains and layout about once a month from AliExpress. Not going to spend a ton of money to fix with something if the fix doesn't work. I can try something else that's cheap and give it another go.
I`ve got a few of those motors myself good value
Dave army surplus in kitchener sells a large variety of motors fiber glass pencils cheap cheap cheap.
Nice save for a Dollar!!! Question? Have you EVER gone Bezerk and bounced Any of your purchases OFF the WALL YET?!!!!!!!!!!! LMAO!!!!! Love the Channel!!
That's one thing I never do, no matter how angry I get. I value material items very highly, hahaha.
Long hood is forward
Don't forget your thingme.
That turned out great Dave. I love that "to heck with the handrail soldiering move" although I do have a question. I have missed the back story on the "dude" sitting away from the track at 13:08 the dude who is "bloody" mess what's up with him?
Play stupid games win stupid prizes. An unfortunate railway incident.
Amazing what difference a motor can make. Was the old one a 3 pole? BTW, some RS were set up for long hood forward, some for short hood forward, depending on the railroad. Coming off the steam era, long hood forward seemed natural to most at the time.
I also noticed the horn is facing along the long hood.
Dave, if you wern't in such a hurry to get it back on the track, and taken your time and removed the motor to resolder the wires and just put them the way they came off and the clip and weight you would have had an intact train..... more haste, less speed... a great job and it shows how simple a motor change can make on a model. Was the old motor a 3 pole? That motor you put in looked like a 2nd hand motor with all the marks on the casing.... weird seeing you said it was new.
Shoulda woulda coulda, lol. I make these mistakes so you don't have to.
Yes, new motors. Paint is for pussies.
Good work. 👍
Shame about the handrail.
It was already broken, honest, lol. One day I'll make nice one's for it.
Super video and slick motor replacement. Will you be trying any of these on Athearn blue box locos? I have ordered motors from eBay but they were 1.5mm shafts, whereas specs on yours is 2.0mm which should allow re-use of Athearn universals. Never thought we Canadians could get a bargain like that!
I will be trying one on an Athearn, but the physical size of the Athearn motors is a fair big bigger. We will see if it works.
@@ScottRails Looking forward to that attempt. I think you can do it. May need to shim motor up a bit to align drivelines.
Did you get those off Temu they do lots of bits and bobs well cheap BTW hattons are closing its all over the super slam here sad mate
All
The best
😊😊
Ali express. Yes, I heard about Hattons. What a shame.
what happened to the led lights?
That is a great question, well spotted. I need to dig out that loco and see if I fixed it.
@@ScottRails not a problem glad I could help🤗
