  • Joseph has been talking my ear off about these new Tech 5 hubs from Hope Tech since they announced the update. We finally got a few sets into the shop, and we wanted to share our first thoughts on this new option from Hope. What is new? How much do they weigh? How loud are they? We hope to give you a great intro to this awesome option for your next MTB upgrade.

    The Hope Pro 5 Hub is the Barnoldswick, England-based manufacturer’s latest precision-made component, and it builds on everything they’ve learned about designing and manufacturing hubs since 1993. As a long-awaited update to 2016’s Pro 4 Hub, they say the Pro 5 is made to meet and exceed the demands of current and future bike tech.
    A couple of key updates found in the Pro 5 are new zero-drag Labyrinth seals and a revised ratchet and pawl system with new springs, both of which are designed to up the load capacity and durability compared to its predecessor. The revised six-pawl freehub design boasts an updated 108 points of engagement (up from 44) to offer a more responsive feel. Taken together, Hope says these design changes offer “the right balance between speed of pick-up, load capacity, durability, and drag.”
    Outside, the hub shell has a new profile that adds stiffness without increasing the weight. It also houses a revised axle design that facilitates the use of bigger bearings in an improved arrangement to fit the latest freehub standards and increase load capacity. The Hope Pro 5 is available in several versions to accommodate a range of disc fittings, spoke counts/designs, freehub bodies, and frame and fork standards.
    The Pro 5 is also designed to be fully serviceable and rebuildable using only simple tools. And, should any part need to be replaced, Hope is committed to making spares available for 10 years after the hub is someday discontinued. Hubs are offered in a variety of vibrant colors as well as classic silver and black. Price start at $115 for a front hub and $265 for a rear hub.

    Glad to hear these are quieter. One of the reasons I'll purchase. And it is one of the reasons for low drag.

    to have less drag on pro4/rs4 is easy to remedy as they use torsion springs to engage the pawls simply bend them. its why i got RS4 less pawls less drag . i think its the beauty of hope design. its fully adjustable. if i want loader hubs i use a double spring on each pawl. if i want less noise i simply use 1 spring bend to adjust

      @SingleTrackSurgeon  Před rokem +2

      That is certainly an option we have used before, but with the testing so far the Pro5 seems to have significantly less drag even with more engagement.

    How wide are the hub flanges compared with ONYX that seem to be wider than other brands. Are the wider compared to the Pro 4 model?

    found the outer freehub bearing on the microspline hubs wore fast on my pro 4s, hopefully fixed that in the pro 5

      I'm guessing that's another reason for that step up axle 👍🏼

    Awesome hub. Just put a pair on my V10. With my Tech 4s & Hope ventilated 203 rotors. But disappointed in the lack of sound. Can hopefully modify ??? Got my mate at bike shop to clean some of the grease out & bend the springs. Not much difference. Not happy.

      If you want them loud, these are probably not the hubs for you. I really like them quiet.

      I think because of the size, and the housing it is completely different. However, we haven't tried that yet.

    Good Day. What spoke length/nipples did you use for the Hope pro 5/DT Swiss EX511 build. Thank You! Cant seem to find proper hub spec dimensions anywhere.

    • @SingleTrackSurgeon
      @SingleTrackSurgeon  Před rokem

      For our custom wheel builds we do the manual calculations in house, and cut the spokes accordingly. I'm not 100% sure what the exact lengths were. I'm pretty sure it was DSF: 293mm NDSF: 291mm DSR: 290mm NDSR: 292mm.
      Double check those measurements before you go buying tons of spokes, but I'm 99% sure those are the lengths mine are (due to the spares I have)

    • @oiyo5124
      @oiyo5124 Před rokem

      @@SingleTrackSurgeonThose measurements seem accurate and perfect for the EX511 ERD of 601. I plan to build with Spank 395 rims and guesstimate my ERD ++ (591+8=599). So I ordered 291's for everything. LOL. If it is too long, do you think Sapim nipples washers might be a good idea?
      I read someone added +4 only for his ERD++. Not really sure how to do this right. Thanks for the info!

    • @oiyo5124
      @oiyo5124 Před rokem

      Oh and the hubs specs were in the Hope website I just didnt find it at first.
      I really want to make this the perfect build and last a lifetime. Spank 350/359 comes with Mg? washers but the 395+ doesnt come with any. I would have to ask spank too if it would affect warranty.
      Sapim website have 4 different types of nipple washer. Oval,HM,MS? and MG and flat/round? They even have spoke washer but for steel flange hubs which might not be for mtb? another option they say is the Double square nipples which have longer threads or the Dt Swiss squorx. I've been reading a lot about how others build their wheelsets and washers like the DT Swiss PHR for durability makes sense.
      Cheers and happy riding!

    „Boost” 141 qr with XD drive?

    • @SingleTrackSurgeon
      @SingleTrackSurgeon  Před rokem

      If it is the same as the Pro4, that would just require a standard XD boost hub with QR caps to convert it. All supplied by Hope. This is common with many Trek frames.

    Just bought the pro 5 and it does not sound like the pro 4. So I switched back to the pro 4 as its loud buzzing clicking sound is awesome while on the pro 5 it is timid and not as effective in announcing your arrival if you're going fast on a busy trail. I have used the pro 4 for many years and it's totally a Made In The UK masterpiece.

    • @SingleTrackSurgeon
      @SingleTrackSurgeon  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Personally, I much prefer the more refined sound of the pro 5. The hubs on my personal bikes are Onyx, so you can see which direction I swing. :D

    Appreciate the hub intro but Hope has no North American customer support. Having to deal with the Brits directly in UK is not the same level of service as I get from the Americans.

    • @SingleTrackSurgeon
      @SingleTrackSurgeon  Před rokem +2

      We have had some issue at the shop getting customer service issues handled in the past. But this is a fantastic reason to go to a LBS. We can go to bat for you and get issues fixed when people who buy from online retailers can't get an email back.
