Thanks for the helpful video. I noticed you were working on the left side, but the two parts marked for the side were for the right side.
Thank you for another great video! Detailed, in depth, specific. Well Done!
Glad it was helpful!
Great videos ! 👍🏻
Great info, Jeff. Thanks!!
Thanks for the Refresher course, Even though I was taught many Many Years as a youngster in the mid 70’s, Some knowledge was lost since technology has changed, Like Rear Disc Brakes being overly common these days, Thanks for sharing.
Great video. Love your channel. You made that look way easier than when I do it, no springs flying, I was a little disappointed, Ha. Thanks for the video
Glad I could help!
Well done.
Great how too video!
Glad you liked it!
Can you do a show on rear axle shafts removal and re-install? I would like to pull my backing plates off and clean them up and paint them. Hard to do when they are on the car.
Thank you! It helped a lot!!!!
Glad it helped!
Keeup up the great videos!
Thanks
Thx for vid! Replacing the cylinder on my 65 Gal, has become quite the challenge… I should have purchased a whole kit with the. Packing plate. Any suggestions where to get a good brand and fast 😅 also… If you push the piston out , is it non usable or have to remove the seals and push it back? I may have and don’t know if I should proceed … 🤷🏽
Can’t thank you enough for this video
Glad to help!
When he said, "yay!", I felt that very deeply.
Glad you felt it too...
Mt 61 Thunderbird cable goes in from the back. Totally different.
Replacing drum brakes is so much fun! Even better when one of those springs flies off, somewhere in your garage...
I have the same set up.on my 94 explorer
Just did mine on my 90 Mustang and the parts are pretty much the same. What a PITA though. I had to take them back apart and reassemble but glad I learned something knew.
They are a PITA.
If that clip keeps the adjuster from turning then how do the brakes self adjust?
You forgot to put the wave washer you got with your spring kit under the u clip that goes on the emergency brake lever stud. There is also an emergency brake spring retainer that goes on the parking brake link spring.
I like to paint new brake drums with high-heat black paint. I can't stand rusty brake drums...
Great actitud;)
Tanks!
I have a 67 f100 pickup bed that has been converted into a trailer. the trailer still has the 9inch diff axle still on it. I want to put the drum brakes back on it, with a surge brake for the hitch. when installing the brake shoes is it necessary to put a parking brake linkage bar on it for the brakes to function properly since the trailer has no parking brake system.
As far as I know, no.
On your new parts there is a curved round spring shim. I don't see where you used that in the video. Does that go on the adjuster?
There are two washers, one that holds the cable, and one that can be behind the shoe guide pin. See the diagram:

2:50 I have this problem on my rear backing plates I don't have access to a welder to do the repair. I've read online that JB weld has worked for some people, is this a bad idea? I would prefer to simply replace the backing plates but can't find replacements for sale.
Just take them to a qualified welding shop they can fix this for you; as long as you explain what you're looking for.
maybe a silly question but can the parking brake cable be hooked up with all this in or does it all need to come out and installed first?
Parking brake is easier of it is put into play first.
You mention about welding the pads. Mine have some big grooves in them and need some welding. What did you weld with? What type of material are these back plates? I need to get somebody to do this and don't want to go in just saying "weld these spots". Thanks
You can take them to a machine shop and get them done. That would be our best recommendation.
Can you get a complete hardware kit including the adjusters, brackets, springs, clips, etc.?
We go over the "unavailable parts" starting at 16:27.
haha
Do 9 inch drums on a 66 mustang require the cylinder to shoe pins?
the pins are absolutely needed. They are what pushes the brakes out to stop.
Not on the 60-65 6 cylinder ; 4 lug and 65/66 4 lug mustangs.
At 8:33 you mention that realistically you need three hands to attach the outer spring cup. I had success by clamping the brake in position then attaching the spring and cup.
I did the same
I got all dirty stopped wiping my hands after one roll of bounty 😂😢😅
So I have a 67 with 6 Cylinder. The wheel cylinders on the rear do not have those pins. Instead the shoe goes directly into the cylinder. Is this normal for a 6 cylinder compared to the V8s because of the smaller drum?
Honestly, I would have to consult a service manual on that.
@@AutoRestoMod I just got a copy of the Shop manual and it is not clear either.
Yes 6 cylinder 4lug 9in drums do not have the pins that go in to wheel cylinders to the shoes. Shoes go directly to the wheel cylinders.
@@joshramsey3099 Thanks for the reply. I was able to figure it out.
My 1962 Comet has 9" 4-lug drums. No wheel cylinder pins.
How do u get to the top rear shock mounts in a 65 fairlane station wagon, thanks
The plate on the floor between the rear seating well and the back seat. Remove the plate and the access area is there
@@AutoRestoMod thanks,will do.
So, no wavy washer between the parking brake lever and the brake shoe??? What about the flat washer that goes under the "U" clip?
It didn't have a wavy washer. No flat washer either.
Why don’t you show adjusting the brake shoe? How hard should the drum drag when adjusting the brake? Should you adjust the drum until it won’t turn anymore and then back the adjuster off a few clicks?
I always adjust them till they are just before touching and then go and drive the car and back up. Backing up is actually how the brake shoes adjust on most Ford cars. But consulting service manuals for best effect
This will work for a 1961 Thunderbird right?
Just might. Pull the drum and look at both the video and the car. They match...go for it.
Autorestomod Manic Mechanic Gasoline Media it did, thanks for the video.
shouldn't there be a spring washer behind the C clip? (7:56)
Maybe. Ours didn't have it.
whats the wavy washer for ????
It is to keep the wire washer from heat welding to the surface.
1:34 car tag . Where’s my shirt.
I just got rid of the drum breaks on my 68.
Good job!
would rather have a root canal than rebuild a set of drums.... tbi...
I despise those little shoe springs. Man oh man.
Remember the three armed navigator from the animated Star Trek series? That guy, need to be that guy.
AutoRestoMod Muscle Car Resto and Modifications True Story. Bet there's an unobtanium Rotunda tool for that somewhere in a very dusty forgotten box...
Dock's Carolina Garage of Texas LOL Lordy, to FIND something in our garage is a minor miracle.
Heh... trust me my brother, I know those feels.
Ggggg
He's working on the left side of the car, but starting at 11:00 he shows you the right side parts and tells you to use those on the side he's working on (the driver side). The text at 11:15 correctly designates left from right side, but doesn't say that Jeff is showing the wrong parts; it leaves the contradiction uncorrected.
TL;DR: Make sure you use the "L" parts when you're working on the American driver side.
Sorry to disappoint
@@AutoRestoMod Hey, Jeff, I LOVE your video's!! Don't think I was coming after you! I was just trying to make sure others (like me) get it right. I was so sure you were doing it right that I checked other sites to make sure you were wrong before I wrote my comment. God bless and have a great day!
You're on the left side !
The shoes on for an f100 are both long
Thus the title with "Passenger Car" in it.
Not much different than rebuilding an emergency brake on a disc vehicle?
Front or rear disc?
my adjuster sets too low against the star adjustment. i have remounted everything several times. What is wrong.?
czcams.com/users/shortsQkM2sUuF9Kw
aww..you didn't go over the rear brake lines....:-)
LOL no. separate thingy.
i think its a mistake to put grease on the backing plates. # 1 they will collect brake dust ,#2 after being a nut about cleaning your gloves so much, putting grease anywhere in there is a no no. just saying
Ford recommends high temp grease on the backing plates, adjuster nut and e-brake pin. So...
AutoRestoMod Muscle Car Resto and Modifications ford made the Edsel so.....
We use the service manual as our guide. If you look at the service manual it stated to use a thin film of high temp grease on the brake shoe ride pads. And there wasn't anything wrong with the Edsel that a crack team of designers couldn't have fixed with some good scotch, a case of Camels and three or four years...
If it was good for them it's good enough for me
I always follow the manual and try to be as stock as possible. I like your show is very informative and everyone has their own opinions. I This is how I was taught as well. My father taught me this and I've pulled the brakes and never had a problem.
Long as you change gloves and don't slather the grease on there like a child thats finger painting the 16 chapel. You should be good so.... lol again great show guys and I love what I do as much as you guys love keeping this hobby alive for many years to come.
Take the gloves off... It's much easier.
Where is th round things with th rubber stuff? N those brakes r broke they got nuttin 2 push against. Ur title should be part 2 step 8 rear brake job.
Real how2 : 1. Get a drum brake adjuster tool (very cheap n many EXTRA Useful uses. around $8?).
2. Safety, Put car up on jack stands n wear safty glasses. Lots o rust on classic cars. Not necessary in ur eyes.
3. Remove wheel-lug nuts in a star pattern, to avoid wheel warping.
4. Spray rust-ease or wd40 or... around hub of drum area.
5. Remove th oblong grey/black rubber adjuster hole cover boot from th backside of drum. Use a flashlite to see inside th adjuster oblong hole. Spray th brake adjustment wheel it is a 20-30 pointed
star-wheel, & it looks like a cowboy spur on a tube. Spray th tube w- rust-ease or wd40 or rust penetrant or...
4. Adjust th brakes by th use of th brake- tool pry portion or longish standard tip screwdrvr n stick it in hole against th 20-30 star pointed brake adjuster wheel.
& it is usually reverse threaded so tighten thby wheel by prying up or down n this will allow th shoes room 2 come back closer 2 each other. Releasing them, from th drum usually.
6. Now banging on th outer edge of th drum in a cross/star pattern will release th shoes from stuck open-against th drum's inner surface to free of th drum.
7. Replace lugs onto studs 3/4ths way so if u miss while hitting th drum with a hammer u can remove th nut to re-thread/clean-up th stud u hit.
8. Carefully with force strike th drum in a cross/star pattern around th hub between th studs to release hub from drum. Ho-hum..,
th key to sriking is to 'Focus on th srike point'
NOW ur step 8. Part 2 video.
9. Once done u will need to re-adjust ur brakes. Get to a safe open space. Drive in reverse n hit brakes hard enough for a slight skid. This will re-adjust rear drum brakes on most cars.
Safty first fun second.
Ok.
+ChrisFix makes it look easy compared to this guy.
Thanks for the kind words!
dont use brakeclean to wash drums or rotors use hot soapy water and dry with air,
Ok!
Skip to 3:00 to get clear of some bullshit
People probably feel that way about you...
I gave the video a thumbs up, it was clear instructions, but all the extra jibber jabber is useless to me, thanks
Cleaning your gloves? Screw that, Jesus.
I'm not Jesus.
Should fire the camera man. 100% better videos on you tube.
