    There's people watching who've never seen drum brakes. Brings back great memories of me changing the rear breaks on my 1980 Toyota SR5. The days when everything was easy to work on.

    *Pete's Garage* Wow doesn't that bring back a lot of memories, I still have my old brake tools from the 70ies. Thank-you sir for taking the time to show us. God Bless.

    Pete you are the man. Remember doing brakes on my 68. One thing that did always wear out were the ball joints upper. Control arm bushings. They came with no grease fittings so I installed my own. We packed bearings on aircraft the way you just did it in the video. Thanks for sharing Pete 😊🇺🇸 Pete I ordered the heater so I can work in the garage in some kind of warmth. Usually stays in mid to low 50’s in winter. And yes we’re quarantined on Long Island since March. Yikes!!!!!!!

      Thanks Arthur. I'm doing a video on changing tie rods and wheel bearing races. You'll love the heater. I leave mine on and it really does keep the garage warm.

      @@PetesGarageI couldn’t get the discount through your discount code but I purchased at regular price and then I contacted them and explained to them the situation and their customer service was excellent. And they gave me a very nice discount. Thank Pete can’t wait to get it. Wish this lockdown would end but seems to be getting worse here on Long Island. Myself and neighbors are all stocking up on essentials. In fact I just had two large trees taken down on my property to give the wood to my single mom neighbor in case oil goes through the roof. During times like this we all need to help each other. Schools and administrators are horrible. Just had my eighteen year old granddaughter hospitalized for threaten sucide. This is a cruel world. So if I can help someone I will. Thanks again Pete stay well and safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 looking forward to the next video. If I had a 68 mustang I would definately find a way to have you do the engine and drive train. A dream would come through. The Vietnam War killed my dream 😊

    Great reference material Pete. A little off the beaten path of brakes; when the cold comes, the moisture goes with it; add harsh chemicals and the hands take a beating: cracked skin. I find using dawn dish soap with old coffee grounds are a hands friendly concoction. Advanced cracking, if addressed early, can be remedied with regular, but not aggressive, use of a pumice stone and hand soap.
    I have disk brakes on my 72 Plymouth and will admit they are intimidating, but I learned to take pictures, it is a great way to not get lost, thanks for sharing as always.

      @@PetesGarage if you can get two more backing plates you can have another set already to go just unbolt the backing plate and bolt the new assembly on , when I took apart another ford truck that is what I did make changing brakes quick .. Build On

    Hi, great video! I have a 65' V8 Convertible and have had the drum brakes done twice by a shop. Both times, the brakes have come back unsatisfactory, front end shaking badly while braking. I lifted up the car and on both wheels, there seemed to be high spots in the shoes, as when you rotate the tire it will spin freely a bit then bind up. On the passenger side, it was so bad, the drum overheated and turned a different color. Both times, the replaced the shoes and drums and still not right. I know they also replaced one of the hubs and still not right. I have decided to try this job myself with hopefully higher quality parts, new Raybestos drums/shoes. When new assembly is complete, there should be no high spots and the wheel should spin evenly, correct? I was told it would eventually "break in" but I don't think so.

    • @PetesGarage
      @PetesGarage  Před 2 lety

      They did not set the bearing preload right, the shoes were not adjusted properly, and they probably had the shoes installed upside down.

    Bro" Can't thank you enough 1 year in to my 65 coupe and people like you make it happen for Jr mechanics like me"
    Would you recommend adding a booster I have all 4 drums braking really bad.
    Which Booster? I hope you sell one.
    I will check my break setup with this video.

    • @PetesGarage
      @PetesGarage  Před 2 lety

      A booster will only help a little, but is worth it of you want to add. If all 4 drums are set up properly you can screech toa halt on drum brakes.

    In your video introduction you show the shorter brake shoe to the front. In your assembly later on you show the longer brake shoe in the front. What gives??
