    Digital DJ Tips Full Review: www.digitaldjtips.com/2015/05/...
    The Pioneer XDJ-RX may have changed the future of digital DJing. Here we look at their introduction to laptop-free gear, which reduces the learning curve from bedroom hobbyist to professional club DJ. Essentially, the XDJ-RX mimics 2 Pioneer CDJs and a mixer, while adding elements of controllerism. In use, it maintains an incredibly easy setup, and USB transports prepared tracks from Rekordbox. Overall it has some great features, but where did it fall short? And what happens when the club doesn't provide Rekordbox enabled gear? Take a look at our video, article review, and Mojaxx's full rundown for more info.

    I've been playing on Tech 12's and an Allen and Heath Xone 32 for over a decade. Final scratch and other digital to analog software + the laptop I find cumbersome. I have also played on cdj's and a handful of controllers including this one. I feel like these handle virtually the same as cdj's, if you learn without the syncing feature which should unquestionable be the case, the learning curb to the dj booth is little to none. I haven't purchased it yet but I'm sold. The capabilities and compact functionality for the price are unparalleled from what I've seen out at the moment. Great review! Cheers!

    going from a producer to being asked to play at shows all around hollywood, having only dj'd using traktor this unit taught me how to use cdj's this unit is perfect i highly recommend, its the industry standard at every club all around the world. and no one should be that guy who is walking around the club with your controller before and after your set.

    Man, thanks for the great video. I'm a veteran vinyl only DJ with over 20 years experience. I never like the idea of dropping vinyl for CD's. I love the controller idea but I'm not good with computers at all (I"m just a little too old I think). I first saw this video about a year ago and have watched it, and many other vid's on the RX, many times. Next month I'll be in the position to buy one of these outright but I can't help shaking this feeling that Pioneer is about to release an upgraded version of this, much like the SZ was a huge upgrade to the already great SX. In my head I see a larger RX with 8 touch pads under the 'CD' wheels (which may also be bigger and better), and more functions to bring it in line with (read: competitive with) the high end Pioneer CD/Mixer combo's. I feel like the board I've been waiting for for over 20 years is about to be released and i don't want to blow my money a board that I'm going to have to replace in a couple months. What are your thoughts on this "Ghost Controller"? I've searched the web high and low for rumors of a possible upcoming board but have found nothing.

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  Před 8 lety

      +Wolf In The Woods Thanks for watching the videos, glad you enjoy them :) Not sure on the "ghost controller", I imagine there could be talk of something at an upcoming convention (Musikmesse, BPM...) but haven't heard anything as of yet. It might be worthwhile to wait if your gut is telling you to do so! Though, don't wait too long, you'll miss out on a lot of time/fun to be had with controllers :)

      My suggestions for the updated and/or enlarged xdjrx (XDJ-RZ ?) would be following:
      -8 pads made with rubber (not plastic) and in rgb color
      -4 channels mixer
      -full sized jog wheels with better central lcd screens (think DDJ-SZ quality and execution)
      -screen should be touchscreen with qwerty keyboard for incremental search (or maybe even 2 separate touchscreens for each of the side?)
      -GUI should be exactly the same as on CDJ/XDJ (for 100% cross-compatibility to club setup)
      -VU meters should be exactly the same as on DJM900 (in quantity-15 and quality-same appearance and not 'crossed in half') and for each channel
      -separate VU meter for master
      -Serato and Traktor compatibility - I don't think XDJ-RX is compatible with them as it stands now right?
      -DVS compatibility
      -split cues for headphones and not just a blend
      -WiFi connectivity out of the box for loading up files via rekordbox to the unit wirelessly
      -DAC should be of higher quality (exactly the same like on the DJM900nxs2) for highest quality sound (remember that it is a digital mixer inside so it has to rival sound quality with analog mixers who are the best that!)
      -Needle strip like on ddj-sz
      -central LCDs on jog wheels of better quality - just the same as on ddj-sz
      -there seems to be an issue with beat matching on xdi-rx - e.g. djtechtools.com review mentions that lining up two tracks using waveforms is difficult unless you have sync on (this may be a really important issue and obstacle in buying this unit)
      Then call it XDJ-RZ, charge $2200-$2400 (where XDJ-RX costs $1499) and.....rule the world 'outside the DJ booth too' (since they rule the world inside the DJ booth already ;) )
      What do you think? Would you buy one?
      Am I Pioneer's new product development manager yet or what? :D

    Great review!!! I also want to see a 4 channel version of this!! This fills a big gap in the market between: CDJs + mixer, and controllers. Im sick of seeing DJs staring at a laptop all night, its like they are holding hands with the teacher, and they forget they are performing for an audience!!

    Your correct, there is no keyboard and searching is a pain. But. You can recordbox on your laptop and plug the XDJ-RX into your LAN and stream tunes direct from the laptop, and also search and drag and drop tunes onto either Deck 1 or 2 making searching easy. Also saves having to output to USB.

    It's nearly perfect for me. All I want now is a 4 channel version with built in DVS so turntablists can use it without a laptop but with timecode vinyl. The next step would be if it also had CD slots so new users could learn that process as well, though that's a low priority IMO.

You need to be able to see/change size of wave forms so you can see the drops and peaks in advance so you can plan where to bring in next tune, there is a way in serato but not sure about recordbox, I think this function is a must!

    Looks like an upgraded version of the Stanton SCS4DJ from 2011, which is an awesome little gadget with not only 2 u.s. ports on top but 2 more on bottom in in foam lined enclosure designed to hold portable harddrive,phone , etc. Securely in place and protected. That being said this looks like a much sturdier build with way more output options.Can't go wrong with Pioneer. I'm a fan. This is definitely going on my wishlist. But this can't really be called the first of its kind when I already own the Stanton that it's modeled after. Definitely looks like a much better version of the original Digital stand alone, but credit should be given when credit is due.

    • @McSpacerson
      @McSpacerson Před 8 lety +1

      +Erick Vonbraunsberg I also have the Stanton SCS4DJ and love it. but... it has no video abilities, I need an all in one controller that's just like this one (or the Stanton) That also has the ability to play videos to a video out port.

    • @trinjaminternational
      @trinjaminternational Před 7 lety

      just to add, a wireless keyboard also works with the Stanton SCS4DJ. I use a mini one which works perfectly. Why Stanton won't just build a gen 2 version I don't know. This XDJ RX still falls short of the mark. No storage compartment for a Hard drive either. Sigh..this is not new or ground breaking by any stretch...Serato and a controller still rules for performances...

    Hi Phil, currently using the R1 and was thinking of upgrading to the RX but the absence of a search feature/qwerty keyboard similar to Remotebox is a deal breaker for me (I do mostly mobile gigs). Great review! I slept on this when it first came out but now I see its strong points! I'm guessing it would be very stable as it's not driven by your laptop, so crashes would probably not happen. The screens (which are essential for me) look great! While not a four channel mixer it is standalone & so are the effects (a big plus)! While expensive it is about the same as a new entry level macbook pro. It is huge but for home use it could work! Possibly I could use the traktor s8 for recordings & this as a backup and for usb/rekordbox gigs.... Hmmm interesting indeed!

    One other feature is should have which will probably be available on the Mk2 version is WIFI. You have to take in account the number of large format smart phone and tablets. Download the Recordbox app on one of those set you cue points etc connect wireless to your device. And with cloud storage you can download you tracks to you decks usb device. The possibilities.

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  Před 8 lety

      +ken ark The XDJ-RX can be plugged into your laptop to DJ direct, but it's designed as an all-in-one Rekordbox controller, ideally used to remove laptops from the equation (with the exclusion of preparing tracks at home and transporting them via USB), essentially making your laptop your hard drive and larger screen. I'd look into the Pioneer DDJ-SB/DDJ-SB2, DDJ-SZ, DDJ-SR, or DDJ-SX/DDJ-SX2 series for Serato DJ. Hope this helps!

    I recently bought a Wego3 and i think it's a brilliant DJ controller for the entry level djs, I am 14 and have a great interest in music and especially DJing, I would like to ask what is the next step after the wego3, I mean if I were to get an upgrade I would probably still use the wego3 for house parties etc but I was wondering what should I get next?

We recommend choosing the software you enjoy and then find DJ equipment that integrates well with that. Question, How do I turn off the master button, the button that's next to the sync button.

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  Před 8 lety

      You use that to set the track loaded into that deck as the master for beat sync function - whichever track (that has been analysed by Rekordbox) that is played first will automatically be set as the "master", but you can specify which one you want to set by pressing that button (when using sync, one of them has to be the master) Hope that helps!

    I've been looking at one of these units, however the big question is, is it worth trading up my traktor timecode vinyl setup that includes a Z2 mixer/controller.
    A massive decision considering I've had my pair of TT500 bought new 10 years ago, they've been rock solid, only needing a new pitch fader on one of them (5 min soldering job) and they still continue to perform, plus I have crates of vinyl that goes into the mix creating a hybrid digital analog mashup, it's worked so well up to now, just don't want to end up making the wrong choice and regret it.

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  Před 8 lety

      Great question - it really depends on how much you like Traktor/DVS. Sounds like you have a pretty cool set-up, but this controller would suit you if you want to own gear similar to that found in clubs, and like the idea of using Rekordbox :)

    • @RobR386
      @RobR386 Před 8 lety +1

      Thanks for the reply, greatly appreciated,
      I've never used Rekordbox before, however I did download it to have a play and it looks like a great way to set up tracks, however I think for now I will stick with Traktor and maybe get some CDJ's to put along side the vinyl decks.

  • @juanchis.investigadorsonoro

    Hi again Phil. I just got here again from your fb post.
    I keep playing with this thing every thursday at the same bar and I still hate it ha.
    The 1.8 firmware upgrade makes it a bit better, but the soundcard is quite bad. It's extremely basic and I know that Pioneer sold it as a way to get used to a traditional CDJ setup. Still it's way too expensive for what it is. I think this should be as expensive as Quaddeck from Numark. It can be a bit more expensive because it has a big screen, but not AS expensive as it is. Besides if you carry your laptop and gig with Vdj 8, Traktor or Ableton Live it's really hard to setup and too complicated. It's a good gear if you want to start learning, but it really didn't turn around the market. I think the real revolution comes with screens like Xdj-1000 or the MCX-8000. Dj equipment is becoming so expensive and Pioneeer is selling really expensive things without quality.
    With my experience and taste I think we should really consider that XDJ-1000 doesn't has a Digital Output, that's horrible... or an all in one combo so expensive when you can get something from Numark or Denon cheaper, more versatile and as good.
    This is another transition gear of Pioneer as T1, S1 and Ddj-ergo. It does not revolution anything.
