2th But wtf
I can't without a explicit purpose
Thats a really appealing title and a highly professional content you are offering here! Your video quality is also improving day by day like in a video game.
When will we get your first German video(i started German February 24th and wanna see what you're doing)
I love when people do things like this, where they make an analogy of something they like and compare it to something else (like language learning). I like how you gave me a whole new perspective to language learning as well. I've been pretty lazy with my Italian but I'm gonna try and get back into it today
Good luck on your Italian!
what about russian?
Right!! I find it really interesting too. I didn't realise this but after watching the video, I really started seeing Ikenna's point and I feel like it even needs creativity to see such connections.
@@AfroLinguo I've personally been agreeing with him more and more the more I learn about languages. Stepping back into a language months after not working on it much feels like stepping back into a Banjo Kazooie save or a competitive game.
Why doesn’t somebody just create a language learning video game to achieve fluency? like an actual game where you progress through the game picking up “words†or cards, defeating NPC that you have to interact with, and hands on interactive challenges that you have to speak the language to get through.
I would love to have Ikenna as the final boss too
Ikenna said his app would be that fun, if that gets you excited.
Language learning video game idea reminds me of that one game called Bookworm Adventures. It's a game where you create english words to attack monsters. The longer the words the more powerful are your attacks. It doesn't include sentence construction, listening exercises and other language learning skills but at least it exercises your vocabulary and familiarity to certain words.
There are games like that, but they aren't very enjoyable so they aren't popular. There just isn't much demand for it I guess, and it's hard to do right (balancing enjoyment with learning).
OMG!!! This is a great idea. It would really be amazing if there were such an App.
@@callmeqt1269I hope it is. I am really looking forward to it.
I love being able to quantify progress like this, whenever something intimidating is gamified it somehow becomes easier (from the motivation, not really alone)
Right!!! Gamified and simplified. When you start thinking about the basic steps, you realise that even the most daunting tasks are doable
Language learning is like bodybuilding use it or you lose it. Real talk though I’m Mexican American I’m ashamed to admit my Spanish is weak I only know English & some Japanese. The fact you learned Spanish better then me & other languages I need to step my game up.
Likewise. I wanna learn but when I speak it, especially around my family they think it’s cute/funny. I don’t find it funny so it makes me stop speaking it.

But just like bodybuilding you dont totally lose it. Just like muscle memory takes place you can get back to where you where much quicker than starting over again.

This video speaks my language perfectly because I'm also a gamer and my most played game happens to be WoW and I've felt the exact same way. When I learned to draw I kept reminding myself of sims learning to paint and it made me less frustrated at the ugly drawings early on and language learning truly is easy to parallell to gaming also. You explore the culture which is like exploring the layout of the game to find out how culture shaped the language or the layout of the game backs up the lore. You build a talent tree where the time spent uniquely tailors the language skillset to your preferences, like if you read a lot of biographies or watch a lot of content or get streetsmart. You have to learn to keep your eyes on the goal or the long grind will demotivate you (it took me 10 years give or take to get Raven Lord and I still don't have Ashes of Al'ar) and the better you get at doing the mundane the greater the reward will feel when you never gave up.
In the game I picked up archeology and leveled it up to then dig for 10 hours a day for close to a week to get the item drop I wanted and I am right now waiting for some books in my target language to arrive that I will read and read and read until reading flows more easily. That's my current "drop" goal language wise; when my reading flows easily. When I started learning Korean it was like "hey this game is on sale, heck Imma buy it, why not" and now I am so in love that I hope to work in the language one day and it's amazing to see how a game or language can totally become a special and deep part of you when you thought you'd just be a casual at first.
Peace be with you. May the light embrace you. Blessings upon your family. Zug zug. XD
Kek - imagine trying to teach languages in Barren Chat. Miss the conversations while running through the Barrens in Vanilla.
Hey Ikenna â¤ï¸ I hope everything is well! Thank you for giving me amazing language learning content and always being so supportive! I hope you’re feeling okay â¤ï¸
We like the analogy! 😃
The improvements I make with language learning honestly feel like beating part of a game. I've been working on French for a month and used tips from one of your videos and have made so much progress, it literally feels additive to learn!
what tip is it?
@@fio-6096 pretty much the stuff he has in this video czcams.com/video/83y55TVK09E/video.html
Adding 10 new words to Anki a day, using Clozemaster, and Language Reactor for Netflix and CZcams has really helped. It's made studying fun and not boring and I've learned a lot!
@@kd1389 bravo, continue tes efforts, tu vas y arriver!!

This has SO MUCH potential please don't let it flop. I love video games and I'm trying to learn a language and this would be incredible. I had an idea of a game mode where is like a Destiny raid, where it would be like 4 french learns (for example) are trying to beat 4 mini bosses (grammer boss, listening boss, speaking boss and reading boss) which after defeating each mini boss you get loot, such as MPC loot (armor, guns, emblems, colours) and Lanuage learning loot (mini quests, mini content add ons, music & movie recommendations, bragging rights) Then you need to beat the mega boss where you have to face everything, grammer, reading, listening and speaking and the loot would be mega quests, 7 days free premium, bonus vocab decks (flirting, jokes, swearing) new maps, extra study tips, the ideas are endless. Ontop of that there would be the MPC loot too.
And with it being french learns it would be people from all over the world, say the 4 people hopefully only will be able to communicate in french forcing them to become a team. You could even have a flawless level throughout the whole raid no one makes a mistake and you get even more loot options.
I'd learn so many languages that way it would be incredible.
This way of looking on languages puts a smug on my face. Excellent analogy Ikenna
Im soo happy u been uploading more frequently :) thank you for heloing me be motivated to learn multuple languages
Frrrr bc him uploading more has helped me become more motivated
@@CocoInterrupted I totally agree :)
Good luck with the language your learning :)
Hi, which languages are you learning?
@@CocoInterrupted are you Jamaican?
@@lingualaddictja hey I'm not sure if you are speaking to me but
I speak perfectly English and creole
60% French
And a decently level of russian, Romanian and Arabic but its very little knolage
It's good enough to go to a shop (order stuff, introduce my self and little convo)
"the people you meet along the way make the game" this. I grew up surrounded by Polish speaking people, but never really made a friend. A lot of them were assholes who discouraged me from learning. On the other hand, I had lots of Brazilian friends online who I enjoyed talking with so much that I started to understand Portuguese naturally.
Awesome vid. This mindset makes languages seem a lot less scary. In traditional education they tend to make languages seem impossible to learn
I can’t wait for this app to come out! It definitely would be jus awesome and one of a kind! Something we have never seen before!
Hey Ikenna!! Hope you’ve been doing well and that you’re staying healthy :) love your content manðŸ˜
Well done what a great video :-). Currently also working on a video about language learning and gaming... I can totally relate to everything that you said :). It's so important to make progress visible. Since I track the time I've spent for doing everything and have my goals visualized with percentage tracker etc. it became way more motivating.
I can recommend another language for you to learn which is my Native language Bahasa Indonesia.
Since you learned Dutch/Netherlands, it might be easier for you to learn Bahasa Indonesia ( Historically, Dutch/Netherlands colonized Indonesia for tens to hundreds of years )
If you say Netherlands you refer to the country, not the language, Dutch is the language
I would also recomend Afrikaans (my mother tongue) since Afrikaans and Dutch are basically the same (except things like spelling, grammar ect.)
Ikenna did it again!! I just find it amazing how he puts this stuff together. Before, I didn't see language learning as video game but now I really do. It is soo amazing
Quality content per usual my man
i love your videos im learning korean now u gave me motivation much love from belguim!
New Ikenna video Let's Go!!!
I’m just so hyped for Ikenna’s language learning app!!
Just as I was feeling less confident about learning German I watch this, danke!
Keep going and soon you'll become a true nazi and thus will be able to listen to uncle Adis speeches in german. What a treat.
Ich glaube an dich!
It's a joke, btw. Ich schwöre.
Kein Problem digga
Did you lose your hair because you trained too hard, just like Saitama?
Yeah but what about the beard? 🤔
Merci Beaucoup
Can't wait for the app
Love this video and gonna try use this concept to help my bro with school ☺ï¸ðŸ™ðŸ’š
Thank you for the video, it's really helpful! It motivated me to change a few things about the way I study languages. First of all, I'm going to think more about the vocabulary I should learn first in a language I'm intermediate in. I realized that I've been learning lots of useless things lately!
I am always so fascinated with your new contents. Dedicated man â˜ºï¸ respect ðŸ™
Yay early again!! Love your vids!!
Ikenna you literally speak to me 😳 you make everything so easy to understand!
Cool video, your advice really helps me with my french🥰
Parles-vous français? Je parle un peu de français et je parle l'aleman et l'espagnol et l'italien et l'anglais et esperanto aussi. Je apprenais français a l'école (college dans 3 anneé). Excusez-moi si mon français est terrible!
Thx ikenna I appreciate the vid really helps me see things differently!ðŸ˜
Ikenna is playing Dark Souls 3 at this point
I always said language learning is like running a marathon. At first just casual jogging for seconds is hard. Then I run and walk for a while. I then get happy when I can run slowly for more than a couple of minutes straight. Running with groups is weird for a while as I'm shy with my slow pace and my form. Sometimes things happen and I don't want to run. After months I'm just running and not thinking about it. Now I'm just enjoying it and testing myself to see how much longer and faster I can go. Then the marathon!
Just replace running/walking with speaking/practicing and you get the idea.
Thank for sharing and this makes sense. This can apply to all areas of life not just to language learning.
Good analogies Ikenna :)
Very very nice Ikenna.
Hope that are good games that can apply these elements.
Great video! Love this analogy. Also this eyecolor looks sooo great! Contact? Filter? ðŸ˜
Ive been chatting w natives on tandem like crazy for the past few days
Nice haircut! Thanks for the guidance!
Such a great video as usual, I'm learning Spanish nowdays
Last night I just had this relavation while studying and then u posted this the day after! that’s cool man haha
Brooo That music at 0:52 !I recognized it immediately Hahah *RuneScape*! Brings up so many good memories! Now i like your channel even more! Im currently learning spanish and your videos helped me a lot! Now I've really gotten in the mood for runescape. maybe i'll get the questcape again after all this time
Just wanted to say i appreciate the use of the union jack to refer to the english language rather than the american flag :) it means a lot, even if it isnt much.
I mean that's where the languange came from :) American flag used for English is only useful if you're specifically trying to learn American English
I agree, sometimes it pisses me off when they intentionally get the flags for the languages wrong like Brazil for Portuguese or Mexico for Spanish or Quebec for French(Also because Quebecois is a language of It's own, it's very distinct from French).
@@fanaticofmetal But it's not wrong is it? Brazilians speak Portuguese, Mexicans speak Spanish, Americans speak English; whether the language was originated there or not, it's their main language and it's not wrong in any way shape or form
Gracias a dios q yo e visto y has postiado este video ðŸ˜ðŸ‘谢谢
Amazing I loved it
You're awesome ikenna
Thanks ikenna you and my NOVIA have inspired me greatly with my Spanish learning journey!!! Thank you Ikenna !!!(Crabjuju)
I love these analogies. And it's not forced or far fetched at all, language learning really does feel this way
Omg RuneScape that takes me back I love that track you were playing from it 😄
Dark Souls has taught me that if you keep at it and keep pushing, you will inevitably succeed. That's how I equate everything I want to learn, not just language. You will eventually succeed, it's impossible to fail if you keep at it every day.
I love your video so much
good luck bro
I completely agree with everything you said and have been thinking about the journey the same way (I also played Skyrim and have been thinking many times about that skill tree hahaha). The one thing I find a bit difficult with learning Japanese sometimes though, is:
1) It's hard to find that "reward" for when you've accomplished a task. Sure you can get ice cream, but ... I'm an adult, I can always get ice cream lol. It just doesn't feel the same as a game. The only time I feel really rewarded is when I watch a show and suddenly understand part of what they're saying. That's a dopamine rush for sure.
2) It's really fucking difficult to find Japanese TV series/movies with real people that aren't fucked up weird, not gonna lie, I've seen some shit and I've been through the whooole list on kissasian. And I mean, really, fucking, weird shit. Lol.
3) There's too much good Korean TV and I end up watching instead of Japanese :( At this point, I decided to just learn Korean as well, sigh. Not saying there aren't good Japanese shows out there. It's just... they're like pearls in a vast ocean of "WTF did I just watch"s
Dude!! Ikenna the no-hair look really suits you man!! Best wishes on your language goals‼ï¸
This guy can rock any haircut
What do you do if your interests revolve around learning in general?
omg ikenna, new found respect for you that you played gw2 haha
Learning words is somewhat different when using kanji though. It gets easier the more kanji you learn.
I always forget that Ikenna isn't like one of the super super popular youtubers, he's so encouraging, watching his videos always help motivate me
He's almost at a million! But he has 60k subscriber vibes
You could make a video about every language you learned to give some specific tips. Currently trying to learn Chinese
Chinese's only struggles are tones and written part, the grammar is probably the easiest you can encounter on a natural language
Je suis d'accord avec toi. I treat language learning like a video game. You slay monsters to get XP. You unlock new skills. You buy items to upgrade yourself. It is an endless process and it is awesome.
DUDE I LOVE GUILD WARS 2 AND LEARNING LANGUAGES!
Hi Ikenna! Would you ever learn swedish? Or any other Nordic language
Great video,....Saitama Sensei
What's the ETA on the app beta? Can't wait to try it!
You look like a super hero with the new cut
Ikenna, have you ever tried your hands at Modern Hebrew, without vowels is interesting, well frustrating at first!
Gamification, pretty cool!
still waiting for the VR chat videos bro))
Watching you play WoW with Runescape background music broke my brain hahaha
I used to be hooked to games too :)
You only learnt Italian and Dutch to increase your number because it is easy for romance and germanic speakers 😀
Massa!
Really interesting, the point where you said that the first levels are the easiests, for me is completely backwards, is like darkest dungeon for me, where the first levels are the hardest, the most frustrating, but then you get enough experience and momentum that the game becomes easier, you stop thinking about how hard the game is because the things you need in order to make progress you are able to get them passively, at least that is happening with my portuguese.
edit: ok, you talked about that too, lol.
Bro this is so real. Like really I learned japanese on watching anime for 6 or 7 years.
I don't know who made that Indo-European family tree chart at 11:08 but it isn't very comprehensive and has a few errors. Most notably how Swedish is made to look like it didn't derive from Old Norse when it in fact did. "North Germanic" is just a classification. Swedish and Danish both are very much part of the Old Norse lineage. The only difference is that they were eastern varieties and Norwegian and Icelandic were western. Nevertheless, all Norse.
I started learning Tagalog because two of my friends and a lot of their friends play gta rp & there is a lot of Filipinos that speak Tagalog there so learning it would honestly help me understand what is being said in their language
hey i wanna learn tagalog too please help
My man slowly turning into professor x
turns out I'm moving to Japan in a couple of months. I gotta speedrun japanese then
*_Old school runescape FORCED me to learn english faster, pokemon were the babysteps_*
Lmao I love that and totally feel that “damn this language is easy af†in those first few weeks 😂
Good analogy
If you wake up in the morning and think.. all right I need to complete a few side quests
And try to get to a final boss in like a month( which in my case it's a native speaker)
So I need to work harder to level up and be able to beat him.. I don't know it just works wonders!
Still can't get used to ur contacts lense, a little bit unsettling 😋
Which languages will be in the Ikenna app?
Are you getting better?
Language learning is addictive.
What's a good language for a 19-year-old English speaker to start with? I have a bunch of languages I want to try to learn but I don't know where to start.
Ask yourself some questions first!
What foreign-speaking country do you want to visit?
What foreign-speaking countries are closest to you?
If you're in the USA, because Mexixo is at the southern border, consider learning Spanish.
If you're in Canada, Quebec is a large city that speaks French. You're bound to come across French speakers all around the country, so consider learning French.
French and Spanish are relatively easy for English speakers to learn, so start with those. Bonne chance!
Interesting
Have your eyes always been this bright? wtf?!
The way I plan on teaching English as a second language is with pictures the most creative thing I came up with was for three different types of villains for the brute force I drew a demon with abs for the evil scientist I did an Einstein guy with the remote with an evil smile and for the cunning and manipulative chess player I came up with hey rook With an evil smile
Ich habe 2 aquariums 1 mit minnows, und un mit ein betta... I learned everything about fish in German
My mother tongue's spanish and I do think that I beating the game up.
What inspired the green contacts?
Going bald, + I use a bluescreen for my background effects. Sometimes the blacks of my eyes get caught in the effect as a shadow hence the green helps it not be picked up.
Thanks, language Saitama
I speak spanish and english but what should i learn now
It took me a day to learn hello in Korean... then 7 months to be able to say my first setence
YO IKENNA YOU PLAY GUILD WARS 2????
