Played through the shareware version of Doom on my dads computer back in the day and played the full retail versions later on a 486 or whatever was available in 1993. John Romero (one of the original creators) has released his own version of e1m4 and e1m6 and also a 5th episode of Ultimate Doom titled "Sigil" which I personally consider part of the canonical Doom experience (if you thought Thy Flesh Consumed was hard Sigil makes it look easy). Also look up "Console Doom Enhanced" which are enhanced ports of Playstation/Saturn Doom and Doom 64 (which is a whole new game).

Seems you just can't trust people with texture filtering on, who then complain that it's very dark with OpenGL in GZDoom, when it was designed for the original software renderer. : D Also funny, when said person is crying about the wad not having Doom 2 assets, when it was clearly stated that it's a sequel to Thy Flesh Consumed, which is the fourth episode of the first game, so it's obvious that it won't have SSG or "new" monsters in it.

10:15 An important thing to note: Nightmare also makes monsters move and attack much faster (50% faster IIRC), and their minimum time before their first attack is removed for Nightmare only.
You can actually play with fast monsters on lower difficulties by launching the game with the command line paramenter "-fast" (no quotes). This mode does not remove the minimum first attack time, however.
CZcamsr Decino has a great video explaining the difficulty differences, along with a ton of other great DOOM content:

    In my opinion:
DOOM 1- first of it's kind. still badass to play to this day!
DOOM 2- Feels like an Expansion pack but with tons of new content. While I don't think the level design was as good as DOOM 1's, it's still badass to play.
Final DOOM: Plutonia- Probably my least favorite of the DOOM Franchise since it doesn't really show anything new + it's Super Difficult even on "I'm Too Young to Die". This game is mostly made for Speed Runners.
Final DOOM: TNT Evilution- Much better balance than Plutonia. It offers new Music Tracks but content-wise, it's still the same as DOOM 2. Though the game is overall ok.
DOOM 64- Probably the best DOOM game yet. It has a mixture of horror & dark atmosphere like DOOM 3 but still has the badass feel like DOOM 1 & 2. The Guns & Demons has a complete make-over & the sounds effects & killing are satisfying as hell.
DOOM 3- A complete different turn from the franchise. Basically a Reboot of the franchise where now it's mostly Horror instead of being badass. It's not a bad game at all, it's just different.
DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil- An expansion pack for DOOM 3. offers new content, & still not that bad.
DOOM 4 (2016)- Now returning the badass feel what DOOM was meant to be but with a modern twist. It brings back that fast-paced arcade action pack run-n-gun style with some modern mechanics in it. & Still badass to play!
    DOOM Eternal- ....I'm waiting...

Yet has some very handy feature including a proper Widescreen support. Is also legal for speedrunning given that you use the proper "-complevel" setting.

Absolute agreement. Classic DooM is one of those REALLY few games (with Classic DooM I of course mean ALL of those early DooM-Games combined) that I could and will play forever; be it Vanilla or Modded. Got the Shareware-Version from a buddy in school back in 1993, and luckily I could get my hands on the full version of the game thanks to a small Retail Store-owner who ordered it for me here in Germany (was 16 at that time).
PS: If I had to pick a favorite among DooM and Quake...I also would choose DooM.
Maybe you could share some thoughts on Romeros inofficial 5th Episode "SIGIL" ? I personally quite liked it.

Ultimate Doom - an amazing start to the series
Doom 2 - Good, level design can be a bit weird in some places but still pretty fun and the new monsters and supershotgun are great
TNT - Good, a little weird arround maps 22-26 though
Plutonia - Alot of really fun and challenging maps, probably my favorite of the IWADS level wise
Doom 64 - Ambient and pretty interesting
    Doom 3 - Haven't played it yet
2016 - a bit fun in places, a bit frustrating sometimes, not as as good as any the classic doom games but still alright, i still have yet to fully complete it
Eternal - haven't played it yet, still trying to beat 2016 before i start this one

both are FPS games, but comparing them isn't quite fair. they are generations apart, made by different teams, different graphics, music, controls... I love DOOM as a whole. it's like comparing Gold against Palladium or Platinum... they're all valuable and have their uses.

Thanks for uploading this review video! I've been on a binge watching fever on anything Doom related since Quakecon 2019: Year of Doom event.
I appreciate how you discuss the pros and cons of each game's level design and your passion for this legendary FPS franchise.
I was excited when it was announced both classic Doom games and Doom 3 were released on the Switch although I only bought Doom 2 because I had already played the first game on PC during my childhood and felt this would be an expansion pack with extra enemies and more varied level design plus no Doom experience is complete without the Super Shotgun. I might also buy Doom 3 next just to see how it stands up as a action horror game more than a traditional Doom game.
I hope they also release Doom 64 before Eternal comes out. I think they're saving it for a remastered version which would be awesome.

ArkhamGhost24 The DRM isn’t that big of an issue. The actual issue is how they screwed up the music and the Easter eggs like the Wolfenstein level being censored and the nine inch nails Easter egg being taken out.

Nice Review dude. I have beaten all these games multiple times, but could still listen to people literally talk about them for hours. In my humble opinion, the Doom Franchise is the best in the FPS genre. The first one came out when I was 4 and Ive always been aware of first two, but ironically Doom 3 was the first one I bought and I loved it so much it made me check out the classics. By now, I literally love all of them except for Doom RPG and Final Doom. Its funny, people say this series is a one trick pony which is kinda BS. The first one was a gamechanger, the second one upgraded everything that was great about 1, the third one made 15yo me crap my pants, Doom 2016 is an excellent return to form and the guys at ID consider Doom Eternal to be their Evil Dead 2. Which can only be a good thing. Good times ahead for those who love to rip and tear :)

After finishing doom eternal I'm rediscovering my love for the classics, and brutal doom in particular has completely changed the game. If you haven't tried it, please do. Also you mentioned wanting a slayer soundtrack, on moddb (dot) com, you can find 5 different volumes of rock and metal covers and interpretations of the original midi tracks. These + brutal doom makes for one of the best fps experiences I've ever had, standing alongside Eternal in my eyes.

I think I prefer Quake to Doom. I know you aren't big on the atmosphere but I eat that shit up. I've never seen anything like it in most other games. But what really keeps me coming back is the controls in quake. I love the effortless weapon switching, the fast speed which gets faster when you bhop, and how aiming and jumping really changes the game from it's predecessors. I do really enjoy classic Doom but I've never beaten them myself for some reason, I gotta get to that.

Wolfenstein Doom and Doom2 were written by a bunch of young blokes creating a game they would enjoy playing themselves. Everything after that they wrote to accentuate their programming skills, which is why after a couple of plays they become boring.
